Balatro looks really impressive

It looks like the sort of free game you would get with Windows 3.11

Game is addictive as hell.

I urge anyone to grab this on mobile now its out, perfect game for the commute or to kill 15 minutes. Surprisingly deep as well.

It would be my GOTY also as its the game I've enjoyed the most and played the most this year.

So that makes it morally less wrong or?

What's the actual difference in testing a 'demo' to see if you enjoy it, and you end up purchasing the game on Steam

Compared to buying a game, testing to see if you like it, and if you don't, you refund it.

I honestly do not see a single difference.

It's not about morals, it's about facts.

What you're doing is illegal whereas the refund method is completely risk free and above board.

Not sure why you're so comfortable openly advocating for piracy in this instance. The game is a very good one, made by an independent developer and it's available for purchase across pretty much every platform and storefront in existence.

It can be purchased for around the same price of a fast food meal and frankly you have to be a real scumbag to pirate this (and promote the piracy of this game) instead of just purchasing it.

It doesn't look like that impressive honestly. Just a simplistic, low effort card game.
It's ridiculously addictive thanks to the strategies you can build around jokers, boost packs and card enhancements. It was essentially one guy who made it and I think artistically it's highly accomplished.

I'm 130 hours or so deep and don't see myself stopping anytime soon.

Minesweeper must be the greatest game of all time by this framework of thought.

Casual, massively played games that have no part of any cultural zeitgeist in the gaming sphere.

I guess Balatro is somewhat unique in this regard since it made it on a Goty nominee list but it's certainly not a favorite to win and you won't hear it ever brought up again whether it does or doesn't.
Is Balatro or Slay the Spire more casual than DD2, Astro Bot or Black myth wukong for example?

Games like Slay the Spire will heard of much more on any "What are you playing" thread now and in the future than some AAA's from the year it released like Horizon Zero Dawn which probably even made it to the GOTY nominees, but was forgotten weeks after release for anything that's not list wars or graphic comparisons

Well like I said I own it on Steam.

Chill my brother

We are on the same page!

How this got nominated over SH2 is beyond me.

It’s good, but not great!

"Looks impressive" is not the same thing as "looks like a great game"

It could be the best game ever made. But this doesn't look impressive at all. It looks like a mediocre looking GBA game.

I suppose i'm just stating be obvious.

There are 301 games tagged as minesweeper on steam. It's just a matter of time before one game cracks the code like Balatro did. Adds something to shake up the formula.

This must be the worst recommendation a game can get. “It’s great for mindlessly clicking while you do actual fun stuff!”
By doing other stuff I obviously meant listening to podcasts and such. Click mindlessly and you fail.
If you just sit there and and passively listen to Joe Rogan because you can't walk and chew gum at the same time, my apologies.

Why do people here complain about looks but shit on AAA games that are all looks but no substance. I get people thinking other games are more worth a goty but to completely dismiss it is bonkers to me. Where are all these gameplay first defenders now?

Never played Balatro, it's on my watch list but I played several with similar concepts (Slay the Spire, Inscryption, Dicey Dungeons, etc) and I'm quite sure it's good and addicting. With that in mind, many here are just pissed off that such a simple looking game is contending for GOTY instead of Stellar Blade (which objectively is 10 rating points below Balatro so people shouldn't even be able to name them in the same sentence) or some other game.

It's easy to tell who has played Balatro and who hasn't. I'm not traditionally a fan of roguelike deckbuilders as the gold standard, Slay the Spire, never got its hooks in me. I often see praise for that game so I just figured the genre wasn't for me which is why I was hesitant to try Balatro when the buzz started to grow for it early this year (or maybe it was late last year) during a Steam Next Fest. Theming the game around poke is brilliant as it allows almost anyone to wrap their heads= around the mechanics quickly which removes a huge barrier of entry to the genre. It's an incredibly smart design that is challenging and addictive. So here I am, someone who doesn't like thee genre, championing the game. It's been a tossup for my game of the year along with the new Shiren.

People are obviously dismissive of it because of the graphics which I wish was surprising.

I don't think it looks impressive. The graphics are pretty simplistic.

If you're saying the amount of nominations is impressive, then yes, that is impressive.

It's the perfect game if you have a second monitor to watch movies or YouTube on while playing

Some refer to them as "podcast games," but they really deserve to be their own genre

So it is this weeks Angry Birds? How long before it gets a movie and cartoon?

(meaning...it appears to be popular, but it definitely isn't for me. The newest "thing" that will be "the shit" for a bit)

No one shall be brought before our LORD David Bowie without the true and secret knowledge of the Photoshop. For in that time, so shall He appear.
There are two types of people in this thread: those who have tried the game and know it’s amazing, and those who’ve looked at one screenshot and have no idea what they’re talking about.

The game is incredible.

Isn't it like the oldest game of the bunch listed for GOTY? This weeks Angry Bird would be Refantazio actually, I would never understand how a game that has less than a month since release be considered for GOTY when it hasn't still passed the test of time.

It's a card game mate. It is good but I don't think it "looks" impressive. It "looks" cheap. Only thru gameplay does the quality shine.

The metacritic looks good. The nominations look good. Honestly if it flew under your radar before TGA, then we are entirely different people. It was a goty nom on release.

That said, still can't put it on the level with Astrobot or Metaphor or Hades, just for me personally.

More like a Slay the Spire or Vampire Survivors or Dicey Dungeons 2024.

Also the OG Angry Birds is a great game. Not sure why there is shade on the name of Angry Birds. They got predatory but when they were good they were great.

I always find the concept of podcasts games absurd, maybe i'm just old...

If i'm playing a game i want to be completely absorbed by it, same if i watch a movie.

Playing something while watching something else sound so fucking alien to me.

(For the record i'm Not shitting on balatro)

I think it's a great way to combine two things. I typically rewatch movies I've seen before.

I'm currently playing Red Dead Redemption on PC, and there's no way I'd watch a movie during those sessions. With games like that, I want to be fully immersed

I guess the closest thing to me was playing solitaire on windows 98 while listening disco music when i was a teenager but now when i play a game or watch a movie, i'm fully dedicated to what i'm doing without other distractions.

game came out in february and was a sensation. it's having a 2nd pop on mobile platforms. also there's a major update planned for next year. not sure why anyone would try to take it away from this game. it's the feel good gaming story of the year.

The harder difficulty levels and some of the more difficult challenges will require your full attention as one mistake will kill your scoring potential and end a run prematurely. The Jokerless Challenge is easily the most difficult gaming feat I've accomplished this year, but it also opened my eyes to the depth of the game and routes to increasing scoring potential which makes that mode not only a challenge, but also a teaching tool.

I was not talking specifically about belatro.

I was not talking specifically about belatro.

Yeah, I get it, but I'd also say being a "podcast game" shouldn't be used as a detriment or an indication of a game lacking depth. How people multitask is going to vary. Personally, I couldn't do it with Balatro but maybe my mind isn't wired that way or I just haven't reached mastery status. One of my favorite "podcast games" is Everybody's Golf and despite the cartoony presentation, you'll not find a golf game with more depth, but at some point I just understood ball lie, ball striking, wind, elevation, pin location, green slopes, etc., etc. and could play those games on auto pilot as they no longer required my full attention.
