Okay, low expectations, but I start to watch:

...cheesy relationship stuff...ugh, but okay
...the bad-boy main character with so much potentional but full of disappointment....starting to really lose me
...naval drills, the Japanese flags...hey, against modern Japan? An interesting idea! I am getting my hopes up, maybe some Tom Clancy type stuff up in here
...see decepticon come out of water...REALLY? Are you serious???

Not even a rent.

Shit thought this was Del Toro's next movie, but apparently that's titled Pacific Rim. I was so excited for that and now hype = zero.

Edit: Heh forgot that was announced this year and they haven't started filming yet.

I don't quite understand if it's really the worst script in 10 years when there's things like the Smurfs movie, Chipmunks, need I mention the Epic,Disaster,Date,Supehero movies?

I wonder how they justify the US having Battleships again? Not a problem for me this looks, big, dumb, loud, and full of explosions. Granted that normally Bay's area, but I can live with someone else.

Alas in some No Country For Old Men style twist will probably make $500m worldwide and have more sequels than Harry Potter and films like this will be the films are kids grow up with instead of The Goonies or Back To The Future. Think about that for a moment. Sad.

Here goes, I never liked The Goonies or Back to the Future at all. My favorite movies growing up in the 1980s were Commando, Delta Force, Invasion USA, Die Hard, and Godzilla films. I never liked or related to a bunch of "childhood defining" 1980s films. Hell, I though ET sucked.

My parents thought I was weird for liking Jaws and John Carpenter movies instead of the Goonies and ET. ET is shit, and even as a 5 year old I knew it was shit.

to each their own, I too mostly filled my childhood with action movies.

I watched all the Schwarzenegger, Stallone, and Chuck Norris movies as I grew up in the 80s. I also had my fair share of all the horror movies coming out. But movies like Goonies and BTTF were still defining pieces of my growing up.

I'm sorry. I <3 ILM because of Avatar, Star Trek and all the amazing work you do. I'm looking forward to MI: Ghost Protocol but this movie and everything in it looks like a ripoff. Universal needs to stop copying everyone else and make more Fast & Furious movies instead.

My prediction:

After being trapped in the bubble, the soldiers decide to map out the area ala A1, B2, C3 etc. So when the alien attacks, they will say, "Ship hit at B4!" This is too stupid not to happen.

Good prediction. I'm sure the kids will help draw up the map, too. I demand that Neeson yell at least one You sunk my battleship!11.

With Radar out, yeah they'd have to map a huge grid.

Maybe the only reason this film is called BATTLESHIP is because it was the only way he could get the greenlight? Berg probably managed to convince the studio on the name recognition of alone, then sneak in the alien/naval warfare film he'd already been thinking of making.

Is it true they're making a RISK movie too?

How will they make that more "exciting" ? Wouldn't it be boring if it's just old 17th century war?

They'll do the opposite. "We sunk THEIR battleship!"

Just reuse lots of War and Peace and PD Romance Era novels.

Gamers, Jane Austin Fans, Epic Nerds, TCM Crowd, etc.
Profit!

Actually any movie studio these should be looking to PD novels to reuse their stories to fit in existing movies or move scripts along. Barring that Wizard of Oz situation (which isn't really common), it's cheap, easy, and you don't need to give any credit or worry about infringement!

Oh cheers to see I'm not weird for liking the childhood defining movies!

Hell, I can't wait to one day watch Big Trouble in Little China with my baby girl (god willing to be born healthfully in January) one day. :)

Amen! Though I will say Robocop scared the shit out of me as a kid when they killed Murphy.

My wife and I are going to have tons of arguments over appropriate content. lol

One great memory is when I had chicken pox (my dad got it too) is he watched Invasion USA and Delta Force with me a dozen times.

He even took me to see Die Hard 2 in the theaters, I think I was 6. The eye pick scene grossed the crap out of me.

My dad always felt that it was the same as a war movie and that I was intelligent to know the difference between real and a movie. Having parents who trust you is awesome!

I love my parents (though Dad was the free speech defense force). :)

I must be the only fucking kid not traumatized by that.

The entire time I watched that the first time I was thinking "Come on, get to being Robocop already!"

Yeah Invasion USA is such an awesome flick, I gotta pick that up and Delta Force.

How old where you? Funny thing I was scared of horror movies as a kid (and didn't change till high school), but action movies not a problem. lol Commando garden scene was gross as a kid, but got cooler as I got older. lol

Delta Force is actually a decent well made movie. That said after seeing it once (the hostage torture and cruelty is pretty brutal) you can just start the movie 2/3's in for an action orgy and rocket and machine gun equipped motorcycles. Oh lot's of Israeli's playing Arabs too. The theme is god tier too! :)

So it's Transformers, but with a far better cast, hotter female lead, and it doesn't shit on anyone's childhood because no one cares about how "Battleship #3" looks too mechanical and has a different voice from the cartoon.

This does not offend my sensibilities.

I can't help but think that this movie will be SO BAD that it will be good. To the user that read the script: is there any hope of that at all?

the only way it'd be gold is if they were playing the actual game battleship in the movie, you know, acknowledging it's existence as well as the stupid movie going on. It'd be out there, but it'd be funny.

Maybe the aliens will be able to hijack a couple of battleships and turn them against our own fleet. But when that happens they have to turn all black and sinister looking with red lights.

They will probably save that for the sequel. Battleship 2: Ship Happens

Shouldn't that be the first (well, probably second) clue as to why the film shouldn't be made at all?
I was being sarcastic, I think there are plenty of other ways they could do this movie but honestly I think they'd be kinda boring. I mean, Battleship is a board game for kids to play. They don't want to go see something like USA VS Russia or Japan or whatever, being all realistic. Make it against aliens and you can bring in everyone.

I mean, the idea of them making a movie off Battleship of all things is asinine anyway, but at least they're being creative and from the feel I got from the trailer, self aware with it.

And, hey, the Clue movie is really, really great, so who knows. This whole thing feels like a joke, but a joke that the people making the movie are in on at least. Like, "Yes, we are actually making a movie based on Battleship, but CHECK THIS SHIT YO."

I wonder if they'll release a new version of the game with alien ships when the movie hits? Oh who am I kidding, of course they will. A Movie Edition and a Classic Edition are practically guaranteed.

EDIT: I hope they base the RISK movie off the post-apocalyptic RISK 2210 AD version of the game. Or maybe the'll just save that for the sequel.

well duh, why do you think Hasbro is pushing so hard for them to do this.

Something I heard a while back about how they want Boardgames classics to be popular again.

Every time Battleship is mentioned on GAF I pop up on some one man crusade about how I've read the script for this film and just how mind bendingly awful it was. Well here I am again with another rant. Brace yourselves.
So are Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber totally to blame then? Or were they doing the best they could with what they were given?
