Before TLoU, what was the go-to zombie game?

We often hear that TLoU came out when the zombies craze was at its zenith, but prior to the release of the first game, what was the go-to single player zombie experience?

Resi? But Resi still exists so has it been supplanted?

I don't even think of Resident Evil games a "zombie" games. Sure, there were some zombies early on, but that series quickly became about science run amuck with genetic modification. It was quickly just generic monsters, which was just fine. It didn't need to stick with the trappings of the zombie genre where the real monsters are the humans that turn on each other.

Given the direction Resident Evil took in 4, I would say Dead Rising is "the" zombie game. Unfortunately, the fourth entry buried the franchise.

Tlou still isn’t the go to zombie series. It’s a cinematic golfing sim, nothing more nothing less.

As much as i love TLOU - I dont consider that a zombie game.
To me Zombies are basically Resident Evil. There may be better standalone zombie games here and there- but RE IS zombies.

Since when TLOU was “go-to zombie game”?

For me its Resident Evil, it’s always been Resident Evil.

It was Alone in the Dark, then Resident Evil came, and it was and still is Resident Evil.

I think since TLOU focuses more on the characters than the world they exist in, I'd say it is still Resident Evil. Although RE also focuses on characters, it's a bit different in how it does that, and they put just as much into the world as the characters. So it has to be RE.
