Best FPS Idea Ever or Worst FPS Idea Ever

I was thinking about horrendously bad gaming ideas and how dumb it would be to have a multiplayer FPS videogame where you buy it but the premise is, just like in real life, if you die once, it's all over. As in your copy of the game is finished. You are dead and cannot play anymore. Now this got me thinking, what if we came up with a clever way to introduce a similar concept into an actual FPS.

Imagine an FPS game in any of the modern franchises that still functioned as normal, but had a special "life or death mode" In that mode, you die once, you are dead, and are no longer able to reaccess life or death mode. You log out once? Same as dying. You can only leave after winning a game. Dieing in life or death mode wouldn't harm your ability to play the regular modes of the games BUT there would be achievements in life or death mode. Kill 5 enemy combatants in life or death mode. Try life or death mode. Get a kill in life or death mode using a grenade. All of a sudden with those achievements there would be anarchy. The glorious rages that would be posted on youtube, the griefing videos, it would all be worth it.

What FPS franchises would you most like to see a "life or death mode" in?

There was an iOS game that did this a while back. Once you died, the app ceased to function. Can't remember the name of it though.

I think a 'coin op' XBLA shooter should have happened long ago, that's not a million miles from your suggestion. People always want consequence in games, that would really cause some.

This was one of Kojima's original concepts for MGS2, apparently. He wanted it to be priced super cheap and if you died you'd have to go buy a new copy.

He also applied it to his zombie MMO game concept. If you get bit, you turn into a zombie, and everything you try to log in you'll see your character walking around as a zombie.

Couldn't this instead work as a "Hardcore" mode in CoD or the like? You level up as normal, but death is permanent and resets your leveling progress to zero. You'd have Diablo-like ladders, etc, and the first person to prestige would get acclaim etc.

This is how it should be done, but then it would be move of a campfest than before and probably less fun.

And people being glued to corners with ghillie-suits and silencers.

I think a hardcore mode where you would have to start a new soldier every time you died would be cool but this might be a bridge too far.

Kojima proposed a similar idea once (once you die, the disc becomes unusable) but everyone in charge of actually spending money making it stopped it before it happened.

Wasn't there a game that corrupted part of your computer's file system if you died? Or am I remembering wrongly?

Wasn't that for a completely different game? I remember him talking about a life simulator where if you died the disc wouldn't work anymore. But he has a bunch of wacky ideas that'll likely never happen. Although his mech world game would be amazing.

It might be interesting if sensory and control fidelity ever gets near real life. As it is video games are still arbitrary enough that faux-death is a nessecary crutch for the imperfect conveyance of information and translation of thought into action.

would be hacked within minutes. I'd play a roguelike fps though where dying deletes your save.

No, it has it's own hardware and the hardware burns itself once you die. ;)

Yeah, I think there was a game that deletes random files, each enemy is a file. If you kill it, that file is deleted.

I heard about some experimental game that became more and more glitchy until it erased itself entirely. Might have been part of giantbomb's articles on Molyjam, but I can't get on giantbomb right now.

ZombieU and Day Z are as close as you can get to this without it becoming ridiculously frustrating.
