Best speakers for PC and console gaming?

I have a PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Currently I have an older set of Logitech 5.1 PC speakers - they're connected to my PC using the three stereo jacks, and I have stereo audio outputs going from my PS3 and 360 into an audio switch box the output of which is hooked up to line in on the PC. However this obviously means that I can't get surround sound if I'm playing console games.

So I was wondering, is there a set of 5.1 speakers which:

  • Has multiple inputs
  • Can accommodate the above mentioned devices all at the same time
  • Has the ability to downmix to 2.0 for headphones (for late night / early morning gaming or whatever) and has a 3.5mm headphone jack for this purpose
  • Is available in the UK
  • Doesn't cost eleventy billion pounds

The only 5.1 set that Logitech seems to do these days is some super duper expensive one, which doesn't even seem to have the needed headphone support. I've no idea what other companies do PC compatible speakers.

These were probably your best bet, but since they were discontinued, the price has become super high, they use to sell around $300 take $50 when they went on sale.

My friend bought them when BF2 came out and uses them still for his 360 and PC, it takes optical in and you can probably find them priced a bit cheaper if you look around, maybe $400 or so.

There is no best as no solution is the best fit for everybody doing everything.

You're at the point where you should start thinking receiver+speakers instead of made for pc/console junk.

What about getting an HDMI 5.1 receiver?

I second that, a nice AV-receiver does exactly what you need and you can get some really nice speakers.
It will cost quite a bit more than a 5.1 pc speaker set, but it's an investment you make for at least 10 years of great audio quality.

The thing is that there's not that much of a difference between 50-300 eur/usd/gbp audio setups, but you can get a really nice receiver and speakers if you're willing to pay >1000 that will last you a long time.

Just get a real surround sound system with a receiver. It'll do everything you need, for whatever you hook up to it (except maybe the WiiU depending).

I got them at 250$ CND (50% off) wayyyy back then and I'm still using them to this day. They are such bang for your bucks it's insane.

I can 5.1 PS3, TV and PC at the same time even on that little receiver. All connections are used tho! :P

^^What he said. Great speakers. Been using them since Nov 2006.

Danj, do you have HDMI or Optical inout in your PC?

I believe I do have optical out, and I think both the 360 and the PS3 have optical out so potentially something with 3 optical inputs would work. I would definitely balk at some of the prices mentioned in this thread though - I can't see any way that I could justify paying £1000 (or even $1000) just for a speaker setup.
