Bladestorm Review Thread (1up says BAD)

This game isn't for everyone. I accept that. But on a technical level, it is very pretty and well put together. The people who do like it, REALLY like it. The people who don't like it are just sort of meh. I'm not sure what the definition for a 4 is to 1up, but it strikes me as active contempt for the game, and I'm just not seeing where that is coming from. A 4 isn't a "meh" review. Plus, when you've barely played the game and can't tell the difference between it and Dynasty Warriors, you go with a "meh" review of 7 just to cover your tracks. Nobody is going to look deeper and realize you didn't play it.

I also like how at the bottom of the review, all the player reviews were removed with a note saying to take it to the forums and comment on the review there rather than on the same page as the travesty.

I really liked what I read in the demo impressions thread, especially from the Musou fans, so I'm still getting it asap (as in, soon as I get a PS3).

No no no, you're supposed to be bashing 1up for such a terrible review of a great game. The demo was absolutely brilliant, putting the game solidly in the 8-9 range. Eurogamer agrees. Oh, I need to update the OP.
Going by the demo, there were plenty enough problems already in that hand-selected slice to cancel out any appeal the game had. This is the definition of mediocre if not flawed, and whatever that is today on this particular 1up reviewer's scale is the score it should get by all rights.
That being said, 4.0 is bullshit.

How am I doing?

Seriously? How different is the final game from the demo? Because the demo isn't exactly pretty-looking. Is there more squad strategy and overall map strategy in the final game? I just don't find the Kessen-type sophistication (not that it's THAT sophisticated) in the Bladestorm demo.

Oh Beered one, I just got my copy today and I love it. I would say YES there is more map strategy going on in the regular game, just because the battles last much longer and you have to consider things like offense or defense when parts of the map you aren't at start falling to teh enemy. I really like the upgrading you can do to unit types and there is a good variety of weaons and attacks units (horses elephants) that all have play against each other (knives great against rapiers but suck against axe, which are great horse killer). Some cool stuff too like using a cannon to break stronghold walls so you don't have to fight everyone outside to get in. I can't speak on graphical improvment from the demo, its been too long since I player, but I thought it looked pretty nice.

Have you played that game lately? I played a little of 1 and 2 when my 360 was getting fixed, and while they hold up OK in the graphics department, they're still ugly as shit compared to this.
I played KUF: Crusaders a month or so ago and still think the game looked fine (style wise). The controls felt a little clunky though but I normally play with the map screen and only go in to wipe the leftovers.

I personally can't wait to get it. I adored the demo.

But then again I've been a KOEI whore since my NES days...

Ahh, the joys of Gemfire, Aerobiz, the impossible Inindo. I've always loved KOEI. :)

Bladestorm is fun, for the most part. If it had a little more polish and fewer technical flaws, we might go so far as to say that this is one of the finest KOEI games we've seen in a while. The change of pace and game direction is incredibly refreshing, so fans of the various Warriors games may want to give this one a shot, especially because those fans are probably used to overlooking technical disappointments. And, in the end, we're total suckers for Joan of Arc. Come on, she's just too cool.

6.0 Presentation
Not the brightest bulb, but it works when it needs to.

6.0 Graphics
You can actually get some pretty intense battles in this one, but everything else looks bland and lifeless.

7.0 Sound
Atrocious voice acting, but the music is prominent and beautiful. We really enjoyed the tunes, even if they repeated a little bit.

6.5 Gameplay
Theoretically, things are really fun and refreshing, but there are a lot of problems that ding up the actual experience.

6.0 Lasting Appeal
You can really pump up your mercenary, which is great, but the missions definitely start to feel the same.

6.5 Passable OVERALL

It's a decent review but it seems like he missed the point on a few things. Complaining that there's no easy way to restart a mission after your squad gets wiped out, for example. Uh, just head back to a friendly base and grab another one? While I disagree with the score, the actual review does a good job of explaining the game so people will know if it's their type of game. Oh, and choice quote: "certain unit types have a strong strength against others".

I would give it a better score in gameplay.. but I guess I agree with this review for the most part.

Bump because I decided to pick this game up to end my holiday season shopping. I always liked the DW games, and have not played on since 4 on PS2... I've been craving one of these games and also like the middle age setting a lot better then ancient china.

I've seen a lot of remarks from player reviews around the web that they like the game a lot better then the review scores are implying.

since it is bumped and I cant be blamed, I love it. Maybe not as much strategy as I hoped; There are tons of weapons and units and they all play against each other differently, but theres not way of really knowing what you will be attacking when you get there, so you can't make a battle plan. Less Mindless fighting than DM IMO. Great amount of upgradeable units and attacks.

Edit: I thought that about lanced calvary too, but try to drop a until of spear troops and you get mauled.

Really? Well my horse is at lvl 45 now and i can slaughter any long spear unit, all you need to do is just flank them and then pound them into the ground under your hooves.

Seems like everything is overpowered if you stick with it and get it leveled up. I've been doing story missions as soon as they come up (so I shouldn't be overleveled), and the game has been really, really easy for the eight or so hours I've put into it.

I usually hate these types of games. I really do. Ninety-nine nights was one of the most awful games I have ever played.

I hate how shallow the combat is. no depth. just using the same attacks again and again.

For some reason I tried the Bladestorm demo on Live, and despite some poor elements like the UI, interface, menus, translation, characters, music and graphics and story, the actual gameplay was actually really fun.

I love how you could just move up to some squad and change like that. It was a context sensitiv way of changing the game, but while it was simple it was good.

You just walk up to a friendly group of archers, or spear-men, or two handed swords wielders or fighters on horse, and your character, with a push of a button, can then become part of them.

A cool alternative way to give more options during combat. I liked bladestorm. Had it been in the hands of blizzard or had gotten some serious polish it would kick ass!

i dunno its not my cup of tea but my sister and younger bro can't get enough out of this game.

i think some will like it others willl not. plus it looks like crap lol. but i heard it plays well.
