Bungie's 20th Anniversary Vidoc

That was so awesome. Bungie, my hat's off to you. Here's to another 20 years.

And please have Tiger/Destiny be an open-world RPG.

I am so stressed with work right now, and I only got to watch 20 minutes or so, but this video made me all emotional. I have been with Bungie since Marathon 2. We have had differences, but wherever they go, I will follow.

Not really loving all the obvious Activision hawking going on.

"The underdog" < please, give me a fucking bag to vomit laughter into.

Thanks for the many years of fun that you gave us Bungie. You forever changed the gaming community and industry!

So some sections of the game were cut and paste corridors? Sure, they weren't great. But there isn't a level in the series that replicates the sense of freedom of "Halo" or the scale of "the silent cartographer" or "assault on the control room".

Halo is certainly guilty of having a lot of cut and paste geometry as you get towards the second half of the game, and it's a fair criticism. The point that people miss in my opinion is that levels like AoTCR are fantastic examples of level design despite these flaws.

The rooms might be pretty similar but each encounter has its own flavour to it. There are many ways to approach the level in terms of weapons and tactics. It's an hour-long epic adventure that makes use of almost all the sandbox save the shotgun and banshee (though of course you can get the latter through a variety of tricks).

If you want to learn how to do level design well, there is a lot you can learn from CE. Visually it could be much better in places, but the gameplay is superb for the most part. Except the Library. If you like that, you're a freak!

Hell honestly there is something in each game you can learn something about level design. Even though Halo 2 had a lot of faults the Arbiter levels mid game where he was headed to get the Index and was trailing the humans the whole way were amazing. Without a doubt I think those are some of my favorite levels from Halo 2 both in Atmosphere and design.

Then with Halo 3 I felt did not honestly have a bad level. Even some levels people hated I felt were really well done and those got hate mainly because they dealt with the Flood. Just seeing places you had been before totally transformed by the flood though was damn cool.

Congratulations to Bungie on 20 years. I actually just finished Halo: Cryptum a few nights ago. Great book. Bungie deserves so much credit for creating the Halo universe. Not only the games, which I love, but the universe itself has so much to offer. It's why I can't wait to get a real look at their next project.

:')

That was just.. beautiful. Fanboy post incoming.

A retrospective and introspective look at one of my favourite developers' legacy. What more could I want? Dev commentary and ViDocs from Bungie has always been great but, this was even more fantastically shot and edited than anything they've put together before and for that I thank you Bungie. The great thing about Bungie is, unlike many other developers, they truly do community right and understand what it actually means to be involved in the community, and their involvement has only evolved since Halo 1. On top of that, the strides they've made in writing and storytelling from Halo 1 > Halo 2 > Halo 3 > ODST > Reach are amazing to watch in sequence (okay maybe Halo 1 is a tiny bit stronger than it's two sequels in retrospect but I digress). Just looking at that one screenshot makes me excited. But it shouldn't. It's unsubstantial. It has no context. But to me it's a promise, it's a promise that they'll have something as deep and interesting as the Halo franchise in store for us, a world that feels complete and one that refines all the aspects of it's universe.

I await what you prepare for my body, Bungie. Keep up the good work. I only got into Bungie games with Halo but I'd be lying if I didn't say it was one of my favourite gaming franchises either, and part of the reason I still play video games.

Also Nathan Fillion's deep voice is quite literally the definition of epic.

Hopefully the next project will be as deep as Halo's. Loved it.

Just finished it.

Phenomenal video. Nostalgia overload. I almost cried. The story of the Bungie. It was awesome to see the transition of what Bungie life was from its roots to what it is today as the telling of it was like watching a child grow up. MAN THEY WERE SO YOUNG like my age right now! Jason, Marty, Joe, and the others.

Then we saw how Microsoft came into the picture and it was just a roller coaster ride of emotions from there.

Absolutely priceless memories from the time I spent with Halo in my teenage days. I will never forget those feelings and moments with Halo and my friends and all the time we spent together playing.

In addition to my collection of Halo games, I have a personal photo and a Bungie business card (well the photo at least... I somehow have misplaced the actual card) of Joe Staten as he did a Making of Halo presentation weeks at the university I attended weeks before Bungie revealed Halo 3.

About a month ago, Joe Staten also gave a convocation address for the Class of 2011 undergrads at Northwestern University where he shared his advice on life careers.

Really enjoyed the video and thought an hour was actually too short :). There were some parts I hadn't even seen yet. Especially from the early Bungie years. Nice one Bungie.

First minute: omg activision and we're the underdog again. smh

Not a good start and I love Bungie for the most part.

Fuck I want to play all the Halo games all over again after watching that. Nice video.

Be interesting to see what Tiger is.

Finally got to see it after a long night at work waiting.

Incredible, as expected. A couple of my website's community members had pointed out they used my screenshot as well as one of our member's (Drax 122) and one of our old mods and a good friend of mine Predator5791. Incredibly gracious for Bungie to include us and make this even more tear-jerking.

<3 u bungle.

CANNOT WAIT FOR NEW IP.

They should have made this 5 hours long (AT LEAST), and talk more about the days before Halo, and also what's coming next :(

Anyway, absolutely loved it.

although ODST isn't my fav, it was an awesome game.

the problem is Halo and Love don't mix, well maybe it can but bungie failed there, the relationship with buck and dare was really lame and just not needed at all.

The biggest problem was the final level, really bad copy/paste level design as you made your way down that highway, and your gunner was pretty useless.
then the final fight was just a flipping firefight level!!

The music was by far the best in the series though, beautiful, chilling, eerie... the most atmospheric soundtrack i've ever heard in a game... just brilliant!

Haha yeah, I thought that was weird. How the hell can they call themselves the underdog, there's literally zero to implicate that

Yeah, wow, he really is a good public speaker.

Great video. Reminded me why I love Bungie, how Halo CE's campaign is still the best of the series, and how utterly ridiculous the backlash against ODST was. Needed more Frankie, though.

I get the feeling Bungie's new project is going to take the basic functionality of Forge and run totally hog-wild with it. I hope I'm right.

Petrichor said:
Nor is Reach. The first game still has the best campaign as far as I'm concerned.... it's a perfect storm of atmosphere, level design, exploration, mood, gameplay and story that hasn't quite been replicated in any of the sequels. I'm sure bungie or 343 will get it eventually though XD
The only correct answer.

They're not making a new Halo game. This puts them at a huge relative disadvantage in the marketplace. No one would allege that as a development house, they are an underdog. They are hugely talented. Nor would one allege that having Activation as a publisher makes them an underdog. This is purely about leaving the tremendously popular franchise behind.

Well the end of the video shows they're using Cameron's perf-cap system on their next game. Awesome.

That was a seriously awesome vidoc. I can't wait to see their next game. I'm really curious whether they're going to develop it for next-gen or squeeze it into this one. I'm hoping the former tbh.

Watched it last night. It's great. I'd love to see more developers do this. Sort of sad they skimmed past everything that wasn't Halo but I guess it makes sense. Bungie's modern identity is Halo.

Well, they are the underdog. A lot of people are skeptical that Bungie can make a game/series as huge and wildly popular as Halo was/is.

They have everything to prove now.

I agree thats why Im not hyping myself for destiny yet.

Exactly. Bungie before Halo was popular but not wildly popular. Now they have to try and compete with the monster they created along with the monster that is WOW it appears if the MMO rumors are true. That's a huge challenge. More so when everyone is going to be comparing what you are doing now to what you accomplished with Halo. So yea. They are the underdog right now.

Video was fun and interesting, although it got a little tedious when they hit Halo 3 and talked more about how amazing it was and less about the development . Most of these behind the scenes stuff is great

No Luke Smith? Was he exiled? I saw Shiska....

Shirley you can't be serious.

Edit: I shouldn't be so rude. Yes, Captain Redbeard was in the video quite a lot. He was wearing a Bungie Aerospace shirt...

I had no idea that was urk!! I've only talked to him on GAF and played some Halo 3 with him a long time ago but never knew what he looked like.

I consider myself part of HaloGAF-lite so you'll have you excuse me.
