Going to be getting an XBOX monday, and I want to guarantee, or at least have a good probability that I'll be getting a Samsung drive. I've read guides for how to check using the serial #, etc, but all of them say different things.

Can someone just tell me what I'll need to be looking for to make sure I get at least a v 1.5 model?


EDIT: Oh, and are there differences in hard drives?

only way to check is to open the box and check it yourself. serial number and xbox revision number won't help you.

Yeah, they don't make the Thompson anymore. It'll probably be a Philips.

Does it matter what type of drive you have? I have one of the first XBoxes and I have never had any problems with the drive...I'm not sure which one I have though.

The Samsung drive only matters to those that want to use whatever media on their Xbox. If you plan on modding it then it wouldn't matter which drive you have because you can transfer all your files through FTP. Depending on your luck, all 3 can be reliable. There have been a good amount of Thompson and Philips drive that can read just about any type of media like the Samsung. If you're worried about your DVD drive accepting media to transfer music, you can always use CD-RW, works like a charm.

You can tell your drive is a Samsung if it two holes symetrical holes on the disc tray.
