Capcom’s new IP Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess missed sales targets despite high reviews

they released a full price tower defense game.

this title has a VERY niche appeal. I played it a bit, and I liked it, but I am not the biggest tower defense fan... so it's a hard sell for me even tho I love the style, theme, and like the general gameplay.

it is an interesting twist on tower defence too, where you fight through an area to get to the end, so you can't say it lacks uniqueness or anything.

but even with all that... it's a tower defence game...

It has had NO visibility or marketing beyond launching day one on Gamepass
And Capcom STILL aren't happy even after getting all that Microsoft gamepass money??? Shame on them. EVERY game that goes into gamepass doesn't need sales as Microsoft pays real well. I wonder what the hours played were for this game??? Surely Capcom would be happy about that, right?

Gamepass=sales according to uncle Phil...

I love tower defense games and would love some AA budget tower defense games again... but this one just didn't grab me, and that was playing it for free.

Companies forfeit the right of game expectations, when they take that Gamepass launch money. Especially, giant third party publishers. Indie devs, i can see Gamepass being a positive from possible exposure, plus the upfront money.

Where is the contradiction??

Capcom may be very happy with the money it made from Gamepass agreement (probably to amortize the XSX/S version) but not with the sales of the game on other platforms. I don't know where XBOX or Phil could be to blame because the game not sell well on PS5 :messenger_neutral:. In fact, that it is Capcom itself that appropriates the blame should say it all.

It's no surprise Capcom's new IP are failing and selling like shit. Kunitsu's art style is ugly and the character designs suck, just like Exoprimal. That Pragmata game in development hell will suffer the same fate too.

Someone else posted this image of Unicorn Overlord, a game that twas indeed a huge success. Capcom used to make sexy/badass/appealing characters like this all the time in the 90s and 00s. What the hell happened?

Let's go down the list:
  • Single player with no physical release
  • Unappealing genre mixture with tower defense mechanics
  • Not so enticing or even fresh premise
People will take this as evidence that new IP is asked for but not bought, but there's obviously a huge caveat to the asking.

This thing doesn't even appear all that fresh. We've done the Shinto/Yokai and Yokai-adjacent/East Asian folklore thing so many times. Just in the last 5 years we've had Sekiro, Ghost of Tsushima, Ghostwire Tokyo, Wo Long, Nioh 2, and Black Myth, Rise of Ronin. Each games that blow this one out of the water in terms of scale and probably substance.

It's also just not the kind of game people buy 500-700 dollar consoles for. And frankly, major publishers should be expected to go for that, because there's too much lower stuff out these days that cut into minorware like this.

Capcom's performance once they run out of software to re-release at rapid fire will be very interesting to observe.

I have mixed feelings about this game, I liked the style, art direction, some aspects of the gameplay, but it's boringly repetitive.

Capcom happy with the money so monster hunter wilds will be day 1 on gamepass amirite?

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Yeah, those extra 5k copies sold on Xbox, will really turn those financials around.

Lol. That's a perfect picture of you when someone is critical of Xbox. A raging green painted lunatic, without the muscles though.

Though, watching you bite on Xbox critical bait everyday is somewhat entertaining.

I guess so. Maybe, I should have taken in account, that an Xbox ambassador would know more about sales failures than most

Justifying those tassels splendidly, JIm.

Why blame the lack of Playstation sales when Phil himself (and even some Xbox "influencers") all agree that putting a game on gamepass increases it's sales on the Xbox consoles. So by that rationale, the sales for this game on Xbox were probably poor as well when in fact the added visibility of being on a rental service should've promoted more sales...

Two things. First, The game didn't receive enough marketing from Capcom. Second, it is in a niche genre as a Tower Defense game.

I bought it, I loved but it would never pull big numbers.

Using the reason, it is clear that sales on XBOX will not have been good either, true, but Capcom will be happy that it has been able to amortize the cost of the XSX/S version ........ Don´t you Know?
What Capcom is not happy about is that the game has not sold well on the target platform (PS5) and also has not had other ways to amortize the cost of that version.... This is where Capcom wonders where game failed to capture users' attention .

It's as simple as that. Gamepass doesn't work miracles. If a game and the proposal it offers does not capture people's attention..... it will be reflected in sales. Those who would have been interested in (but didn't intend to buy) in the game on Xbox will surely have tried Gamepass. Which is a win-win for them.

From here, the obsession of some with P. Spencer is a subject that I leave to others... :messenger_winking:

Marketing did fail it, but I doubt it would’ve done significantly better with it anyway. Another stern reminder why major studios continue to push remakes and sequels. Feels bad.

I'm sure Capcom isn't shocked. It felt like they knew the game would be a gamble. But they wanted to give something new a shot. At least it reviewed well.

With zero marketing, no physical release, and a 50 buck pricetag???

Pisses me off how stupid publishers can be, especially their "analysts" overestimating sales on everything just for a positive forecast...

And this game is genuinely awesome!
Idk if it’s a culture thing.

Working for a Korean company in another industry we will give them accurate projections, market data, customer feedback, etc to create sales goals.

Then they come back with dummy numbers that just aren’t realistic or achievable. Anything to make the investors think it’s going to boom big when that’s not the case.

It’s a warped and retarded strategy and I’m not sure if it’s a global corporate thing or an Asian corporate thing or what.
