RE7 was brilliant
RE2R was great but flawed
RE3R doubled down on everything wrong with RE2R
RE4R was fine, showed they learned lessons but doesn't pass the original (a high bar, in fairness)

That's my only opinion of post-RE6 Capcom.

In general they've done a lot to redeem themselves since RE6 the successful piece of shit, and have had more successes than failures. Capcom could--and have been--a lot worse.

Come to think of it... outside of Resident Evil Remakes and their amazing game collections I have had no interest in their recent output. Those remakes are fantastic, but everything else is meh.

Street Fighter has been in the shitter since Capcom decided to approach it as a service. There is something really underwhelming about their visual design and pace/flow of combat. The production values and coolness factor of Tekken 8 somehow has me playing with relative frequency even if I am not a fan of its service approach either. I am even playing characters that I have barely touched before like Lars, Yoshimitsu, and Kuma.

I like SF6 way more than Tekken 8....then again why are we comparing these two fg's that are so different from one another

I don't know but there has to be a reason I am playing older Street Fighters (IV and prior) more than the recent one. Can't say the same about the recent Tekken or The King of Fighters game.

The only Capcom title since their fabled "return" I've truly loved has been RE2R really. I came around to RE4R but I prefer the original. I hated RE7, thought RE8 ranged from lame to bad and hated DMC5 as well. SF lost me a long time ago but that's just a personal thing.

Not for me, I’d place the following above them:
Sony
Nintendo
Rockstar
From
Square Enix
Bandai Namco
Sega
Konami

They’re alright though.

Dragons dogma 2 was a disappointment. Less content and terrible optimization compared to the original. They still havent fixed it by the way.

I would love to agree, but Capcom just hasn't been great in recent years again. They're of course not nearly as bad as Konami and I'm glad they're "back" in to begin with, but they also showed recently that they're starting to lose ground again, quickly.

RE3R was a joke
RE8 was too
DD2 still is

I'm really curious how Monster Hunter will turn out. Honestly, since DD2, I'm skeptical.
At least give me CV remake :3

Their Resident Evil remakes have been incredible. Monster Hunter World too (and Rise to a lesser extent). BUT I absolutely despise the direction they're heading with Monster Hunter cosmetic DLC. I really hope they tone down the greed and nail MH Wilds.

Either way, worries aside, they have great IP and treat it with dignity and respect. Would love to see a new DMC, third-person Megaman and Capcom Vs. Fighter

Nowadays? I disagree. Capcom's output this gen, while great for the most part in terms of quality, has been disappointingly anemic in terms of quantity.
I have no idea what happened. I mean, if you compare it to the 90's it's a fucking bloodbath, but it's still bad even against their output last gen, because they only focus on big budget games now. Yeah, you sometimes get stuff like Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess (which was dumped as a digital-only release despite costing only $10 less than Astro Bot), but it's not enough to make up for their lacking release schedule.
They didn't even publish ANY *new* game (even counting remakes) in the entirety of 2022, it's THAT bad.

Going on, Capcom should collaborate a lot more with external developers.
Well, maybe not 'should' as financial results most likely say that their current strategy is better than ever, but it's just something I want to see happening. Give the Mega Man IP to someone else, for fuck's sake!

There's probably dozens of other examples from the weird 2007-2013 period where Capcom was trying and failing to be a western developer (Dark Void, Bionic Commando, etc) and a lot of people had given up on them as a dev / publisher.
I don't get this if you're using two games not developed by Capcom as examples. They weren't trying to be a Western developer, they just published Western games, something that literally every other major Japanese publisher does.

Capcom probably takes up the highest percentage of all games i own, but theyve somewhat been shit for me outside of Resident Evil VR.

Didnt luke SF5 or 6 (4 was great), dont play Monster Hunter, dont care for RE in 1st Person if not in VR, and the remakes havent quite hit the nostalgia itch i though they would.

They also cancelled deepdown. Outside of Resident Evil and Street Fight they have just been a remake and re-release machine. They just play on nostalgia and unfortunately they dont have the developmental chops to really make games graphically stand out to me.

Normally threads I make have a poll. This one doesn't. It's not even up for debate.

It's a royal Capcom circle jerk thread.

Have they had their moments of slip ups? Sure. But think about companies that used to be the goats and how far they've fallen. Blizzard, Bethesda, SquareEnix, Bioware, etc. Companies that had iconic franchises and characters all but left in the realm of nostalgia.

Then you have Capcom who not only has arguably the biggest pool of iconic franchises and characters in the industry, but keeps feeding players new entries, remakes, remasters, and new IPs. For every RE remake there is a game like Exoprimal, and for every new Monster Hunter, you get a risk like a Dragon's Dogma 2 or a fan service megaman legacy collection. The portfolio is staggering for all the genres they touch and do so damn well. Oh, and an in house engine that blows past the competition? Yes please.

Not only do they deliver on what players want these games review well, leave great impressions with actual players, and sell well. Capcom has withstood everything the industry has thrown at it for all these years and remained a beacon of excellence.

Praise be.

Some Key Franchises:
Megaman
Street Fighter
Marvel vs Capcom
Devil May Cry
Resident Evil
Monster Hunter
Ace Attorney
Onimusha
Okami
Viewtiful Joe
Dragon's Dogma
Meh, all they do are RE remakes and endless Monster Hunter games. Also Street Fighter DLC.

Capcom is the most boring, risk-adverse company in the industry right now.

All their franchises and the genres they were good at are dead now except for like 4 at this point.

Viewtiful Joe - dead
Megaman - dead
Dino Crisis - dead
Okami - dead
Devil May Cry - probably dead
Onimusha - dead
Lost Planet - dead
Darkstalkers - dead
All beat em ups - dead
All shmups - dead

The number of genres they've popularized and mastered is unmatched outside of Nintendo.

Survival Horror
Character Action
2D Fighting Games

+ they are responsible for SO many great developers who have become industry wide names.

Kamiya
MIkami
Nakamura
Ono
Itsuno
Fujiwara

Yup, and it's not like constant new IPs made up for all of it.
It's hard to get excited for Pragmata when it's been MIA for so long and considering the fact that Capcom already did this whole bullshit before with Deep Down.

I can't deny it.

Others can sometimes outshine them, but their track record for as far back as they go makes them the GOAT.

They have more hits than misses but they definitely have periods where they head straight to shitsville. The Dead Rising Demake is proof they're heading in that direction again.

I think capcom was better during the nes and snes days but at least they have maintained a level of excellence unlike a lot of others.

Yup, a bunch of dead IPs. When they try to create something new like Kunitsu-Gami or Exoprimal, they’re instantly dead on arrival as no one cares. It’s only a matter of time before they go back to being crapcom, and continue bleeding talented staff.

Most of Capcom's output has ranged from OK to Great since they started using the RE:Engine.

RE7 was a great game until you left the house. Once you got to the boat, it nose-dived in quality. Ethan is a terrible protagonist as well. 8/10
RE8 was OK. Parts of it were good, others weren't, but it felt like a mis-mash of different games and it felt like Capcom weren't even sure what they were going for. 7/10

RE2Make was a mostly fantastic Remake. GOTY contender-level experience. 9/10
RE3Make. Passable for a standard 3rd person action game. Was poor as a Remake. 7/10
RE4Make. A great game, but it didn't require a Remake imo. The OG still holds up pretty well. 9/10
Dead Rising Remake. It's fine but nothing more. A waste of time and money really to remake a game no-one really wanted. 6/10

Dragon's Dogma 2 - Excellent in some parts, but falls off in 2nd half owing to a terrible narrative and lack of enemy variety. Not to mention the dreadful performance on launch that would have killed most western releases stone-dead. 8/10

Monster Hunter World - Really good game. 9/10

Let's not mention IPs like Exoprimal ot Teppen which were DOA.

For me, they get way too much credit for the inconsistent quality they deliver. They aren't Fromsoft for example, who have consistently delivered 8.5-10/10 bangers for the last 10-15 years.

They are for me. Horror/action is my favourite genre and they have been innovators in that time and time again.

I was very close to buying the CPS1 home system imported back in the day along with SF 2 Turbo as the first game. I ended up getting a Neo Geo and more games on a much better deal. My friends and I mastered Samurai Showdown 1 and 2, and had Fatal Fury Special sitting on top of the MVS to show we had it at home. The system memory cards were also a great idea. Minds were blown when they saw the secret Ryo battle come straight up, like magic.

All they do is remakes of old games. Just a few years ago they were on the same list as Konami for SHIT DEVELOPERS FUCKING over customers but I guess all is forgiven because they got lazy and just remade old games

Stop this, FUCK CAPCOM

Arsic

Loves his juicy stink trail scent
I can't cheer for a company that stopped taking risks and thrives on remakes and sequels
???

We just gonna act like exoprimal and kunitsu gami don’t exist?

Capcom is one of the only companies like I mentioned in my OP that spreads their portfolio across new entries, remakes, collections remastered, and new IPs. They hit with a broad brush and still take risks.

We all could’ve told them both exoprimal and kunitsu would flop but they still released them.

Capgods. They've been gods since I was a wee lad at the arcades playing one of the best games ever, Street Fighter II. Now I'm 43 and they are still the best.
