Didn't think Chernobyl would be political but the war around it is I guess.

It took until 2012 for us here in the UK to stop mandatory testing on sheep due to the radiation making it to our hill farms and we are the other side of the continent. Disturbing the dome is a very dumb thing to do.

An attack on the protective dome is an attack to Europe as a whole. Another radiation disaster wouldn't affect Ukraine only. Whoever did this wants to see the whole world burn.

The problem with “politics” here is people can’t help themselves. It’s brain dead easy not to bring up politics in a thread like this. Focus on Chernobyl potentially melting down instead of (typically) bringing US politics up.

As always, "cui bono". Anyone who thinks Russia would engage in an action so reckless and dangerous right on the verge of this wrapping up more or less in their favor is, quite frankly, retarded.

The CIA and other rogue American elements have a long history of engaging in these sorts of ops to keep the USA involved in quagmires just as people are trying to get out of it.

That would be very foolish on Russia's part. If radioactive material was released, it would definitely impact Russia, especially the western regions that are geographically close to Ukraine and Belarus. Radiation doesn’t respect borders, something Russia should be very aware of.

Due to the extreme risk of hurting themselves, you'd have to ask why do it in the first place? Damaging the dome would do nothing to end the war. In fact, it would probably escalate the further with more support being thrown at Ukraine.

I'm not saying it wasn't Russia. I'm just struggling to understand the logic of such a dumb move.

The Russian regime has a tendency to stoke the flames and test how much they can get away with. They're making it an Olympic discipline in how to deflect blame or deny any wrongdoing.

They sometimes loose control of these drones, due to incompetence or EW I'm not sure.

Also the old soviet sarcophagus is still inside this dome, which the EU paid for. So the risk of radioactivity being released is very small.

It makes me curious what the remaining half life is.

I also wonder if/when people living (reactivity) close by adapt to it and it no longer affects them.

For those who think Russia wouldn’t do this and it must be someone trying to make them look bad…. Have you considered it’s simply Russian wanting to walk into peace talks with “Russia has a lot of leverage they can really fuck things up” on everyone’s mind?

Russia is a place where dissenting voices use to fly out the window, literally. The reason why the West has been so dumb at dealing with these bastards is that they apply their logic and moral compass to them. Big mistake. The same as believing that Putin is an oddity and not the norm.

NATO didn't invade Ukraine. Russia did. And Georgia. And Chechenia.
You can try to blame the victims all you want, but only Russians will believe that there was any other reason than Russian greed and imperialism.
Claiming that it's always the fault on someone else, no longer fools anyone.

Russia is a force that’s both malicious and incompetent so it’s hard to know where on the scale of either this is. Russia does not want peace and in its current state is incapable of it.

Hopefully the damage is not an issue but quid pro quo, whatever Russia targets it also puts on the table for retaliation.

NATO is an inconvenience and annoyance to him, but that's not his reason for this. He built and designed a system meant for a slow conquest to overtake former USSR territory in some form of twisted revanche. He wouldn't stop at Ukraine. There have been indications Moldova would be next on his menu.

Like winjer winjer said, he already struck down on Georgia and Chechnya. Belarus is practically Russian territory too. When he didn't succeed to plant a puppet in Ukraine, and repel the Ukrainians who fought back to regain their freedom, he decided to claim it by force instead under false pretext.

Putin has outright built a kleptocratic system where corruption serves as a foundation. Its not a flaw, its by design. It goes way back to his ties to the Russian mafia. Many, if not all, of the highest ranking officials are close acquaintances from his time at St. Peterberg. "Democracy" is just a neat decoration and smoke screen for the Russian public. They can't express their discontent with it anyway. Anyone who oppose his system is either ostracized, sidelined or worse, like you said.
