Crysis 3 Open Beta starting Jan 29th

I've been having a blast playing this. Truth be told, I never played Crysis 2's MP, so this was new to me. After being all Call of Dutied out (I still play Battlefield 3, but damn it's losing players) - this game felt fresh.

In terms of graphics, I have a GTX 680 2gb SLI - and it can run everything maxed out at 45-50fps. No lag or screen tear, so I can't really tell the difference. If I was running at a 1920x1080 resolution, I think I could hit 60fps.

The graphics are really unreal. I love the filters, and how well done the grass and environment is. I know it might seem trivial, but it really adds to the immersion. I really hope more next gen games stride for this.

My only concern is: MEMORY. I don't know if it's because it's the beta, and not optimized. Or if the final build will actually be this heavy. But holy hell. This isn't even running on Ultra and it's hitting 1946mb on my Graphics Cards. Sometimes going over 2gb. I actually had my cards crash once as a result. And that really bums me out, as my $850 put into the 680 SLI is already obsolete.

Oh well, such is the tech hobby. Guess I'll have to spring for SLI Titans when they drop. I just ordered a 2560x1600 monitor. There is no way this will run at the settings I have now, it will easily push over 2gb as well something like Battlefield 3.

Meh, just people running around invisible all day. It's also as unpolished as Crysis 2 was.

lol 3/10

amazing, the game looks so much better now :D

De nada.

Also, doesn't resolution affect memory use? I'd play at 1080 with 2X SMAA, but eh.

Definitely does. The higher the resolution, the more memory it will take up. Most people using 2560 are easily eating 2gb. Unless you tone down some settings to manage it. But I maxxed out everything, and pushed my cards to the limit.

It really is, though. It reminds of recent Halos where people can just spawn with Active Camo which really does not work well at all. It's even worse in Crysis where literally everyone spawns with Camo. It's no fun fighting against people who can go invisible at any moment they want, especially since there's hardly any drawbacks like in Crysis. And I say that as someone who is doing pretty well so far, but it just leads to pretty cheap tactics.

Eh, I actually love that. I have a 7.1 surround system, and it's intense listening to noise and communicating with your team. When you hear the sound of a hunter coming at you, the paranoia becomes high, and you try to figure out where they are rushing you from.

That to me is exhilarating. But I do see your criticism. One issue I think, is that the bows are one hit kill. You basically are forced to keep moving erratically, and can't ever just sit still. My issue with that is, some of the fun is finding a good spot, and looking for a hunter. This game really punishes you if you even stop for one second. Someone can shoot you from any direction with a Bow, and it's game over. They should make headshots one hit kill.

EDIT: For the record, I'm not saying I love this. I've been playing it in short bursts, along with other games. I've really enjoyed it. I'm not sure I could play it full time though.

-- Cloaking actually got nerfed quite a bit in Crysis 3. The problem is that once people figure out that the drain is way faster they will be camping a hell of a lot more.

Well, Hunter mode is a different beast.

Played it, it's just call of duty without the intense lag issues. I did have some fun with it, reminded me of killzone with the overall feel of the game, but just running around shooting with extra armour or invisibilty(funny how people think it really makes them impossible to see in close quarters) is fun in short bursts but doesn't really hold me in.

Meh, just people running around invisible all day. It's also as unpolished as Crysis 2 was.

Kind of the point when you and everyone else have a super-powered suit that can block bullets, run like 50 miles an hour, let you kick cars like they were made out styrofoam, and jump 15-20 feet straight in the air. Besides, there are hard counters to invisibility like nano-vision. Crysis2's really big problem was with hackers.

lol I wouldn't call it cloak. It's more like "Can't see you as wel when standing in front of grass from far away" mode. The invisibility wont get you very far unless you use it the way it's supposed to be made. It also take a while to turn on completely. I don't think it sounds like you've put much gameplay time into this arguement.

Also its fun to kill people with the bow. But I can't help but ask military/story wise why are the using bow and arrows?

But Crysis multiplayer is all about the suit modes. If you're not constantly using cloak and maximum armor, you're going to have a bad time. If you play it a lot the cloak eventually gets a lot easier to see. The key is standing still and scanning an area. Besides that, just run fast so you can cover your path behind you, and flank the hell out of people.

Game is definitely more polished the Crysis 2.

Use nanovision or spot with the visors. They have to go visible when they shoot anyway.

Because shooting a bow won't give away your position like a rifle will. Also, the ammunition is reusable too. ( though i dont think the second point applies in this game)

Well this is crap. I preordered Crysis 3 so I could play Crysis 1 before C3 comes out, but they don't give you the code until the release date for C3t. Kinda defeats the purpose...

I just melee, the lunge will lead me to someone across the map, whether they're invisible or not.

Crazy. I'm still learning the ins and outs of PCs and I'm in the midst of getting parts together to build my first ever gaming rig. I will be gaming (probably 80% at least) on my 60" Pioneer plasma TV so I will be at no more than 1080p. At some point I may buy a 23"/24" monitor so I can do some KBM gaming at my desk but that will be later on. I have pretty much settled on a single Gigabyte 2GB 680 as my GPU but I've been wondering the past few days if that is going to be enough. Think I will be okay with that for a while?

If you are gaming at 1080, you should be more than fine for the next couple of years. A single 2gb GTX 680 can destroy pretty much any game maxed out at 1080p. It's only when you start getting into the higher resolutions, that memory usage starts to skyrocket.

That said, I never want to say "future proof" - because fact is, no one knows what the next gen games are going to push. If you are that worried, you might want to invest in a 4gb model. 4gb would be a really comfy cushion/ safety net. You might also want to check out the GTX 670 which is very close to the 680 in performance. You can get the 4gb model for the same price as the 2gb 680 model, and again, the performance levels are so close (especially since you are going 1080p)

But it could also be overkill - if games don't ever push beyond 2gb at that resolution. I know Max Payne pushed past that (for a single card) at 1080, but that's because they had a really insane HD texture pack. I figure though, even IF some games push past 2gb at 1080 (again, hypothetical) - you could still run the game at really high settings, and just tweak some settings down a level. So I think you should be fine.

Here is a couple links that might help you:

First and foremost: The GAF PC thread (a lot of experts there, that will gladly help you out. The have more knowledge than me, and will better answer your questions):

GTX 670 4gb

And they are stock OC + better cooling. But again, who knows if games will push past 2gb at 1080p, and for the money, you can't beat the GTX 670 4gb. If I would have done my build all over again, I probably would have gotten a 4gb GTX 670, because I could have SLId another 4gb later down the line. But now I'm bottlenecked at 2gb memory (but again, keep in mind I'm gaming at a higher resolution). I'm probably going to end up dropping $1,600 when the TITAN comes out, to SLI those.

Thanks for the info Catatonic! I've definitely got some use out of the PC thread as that is where I've gotten so many ideas on what I want to build. I still have a LOT to learn but that thread (and info like yours) has helped me out a ton.

I broke down today and preordered this at Gamestop (360). Between Hunter mode and Campaign there's seemingly more than enough to keep me happy with a purchase, and the free Crysis1 download and instant access to the bow convinced me to preorder.

Still having fun in the beta, but I spend a lot more time playing Hunter than Crash Site.

Game looks amazing and runs so much better than Crysis 1 does for some reason, even maxed out at 2560x1440. I'm terrible though and I think my days of fast paced multiplayer FPS are long since gone.

I've figured out a good way to render my vids in their normal 60 fps. But a normal round comes to around 1.5 gigs. Anyone know a filehosting site? Not gonna pay money.

MSAAX2 would be more taxing than say FXAA?

In other words, what's the least taxing AA method in the beta?.

I know there are many options to choose from this time. Have an OC 670gtx, i7 3770k. Plan on playing at 1080p on ultra first and I'll see how it goes when the game arrives using the latest Nvidia drivers.

SMAA 1x or 2x

Seemed very interesting so I maxed everything but nothing's changed. The shadow distance is the same, no particle shadows, etc. Maybe it will work in the full retail game? And I'm sure it didn't work as my frames remained the same even though I doubled and tripled many LOD adjustments. And yes, I did place the autoexec in the bin folder and the crysis folder.

Most of it is locked away, as usual in Betas - All these fancy configurators and whatnot are a bit pointless until the full game hits.

Agreed completely, I'm floored with how much fun I've been having and also, did you know you can kick people in the shins?

Awesome video. First I've seen with a wider FoV too. Looks perfect like that. I hope next gen more console games have wider FoVs.

Man, I'm honestly not sure whether or not to keep my preorder for the PS3 version or not. Normally I wouldn't cancel a preorder just over visuals but I'm expecting a next gen release as well and would rather wait and get it on Orbis. I'm a huge fan of the first two games but I'd rather wait and experience it with all the visuals tricked out instead of one of the worst looking FPS I've seen in a long time.

I played this for the first time last night, got to level 8 I think and enjoyed it.

Played it on 360, and the framerate seemed....weird. I dunno, it wasnt jerky, but seemed to be skipping a lot of frames. Very hard to describe, but it made it difficult to run through the levels without things flying past you quickly.

Is it really running at 30fps on consoles?
