Yeah I was surprised by how great the quality was during that sequence. They are doing a really good job of adapting the manga properly

I just hope that Science Saru is the Studio to adapt the rest of the manga to anime
This is the second time the anime did it better than the manga, first one was the running sequence when fighting Turbo Granny. This studio is on fire .

I don't even notice the dress she wear is the same dress she gave her daughter when I read the manga lol.

Although they obfuscated the suicide part which is understandable. I still remember the panel when she's standing on the rooftop :messenger_crying:

That was my only disappointment, that panel in that manga is extremely sad but it is understandable why they didn't show it

Havent watched it yet, but I'm up to date with the manga, and if you guys think this backstory was sad, brace yourselves.

There are many sad stories in the manga. My favorite one was Zuma's, by far.

You guys havent experienced anything yet. Dandadan is pure gold. Every arc is great. It gets better and better.

Caught up after watching episode 1 weeks ago. Definitely liked these episodes more. The direction, artwork, and shot composition have all been fantastic. The chemistry in the main cast is good too although the obvious star I think is Shion Wakayama as Momo. I remember her really only as Takina from Lycoris Recoil (although she's played some minor roles in other things I've watched) and there were some opportunities for flexing in that role but she's really nailing Momo's 100% off the cuff personality. And again the direction is so on point. All the right time is spent on interactions to give them believability.

That said, I'm not as keen on the last episode (7). Didn't feel earned to me. "Oh no, the poor mother who sells herself and works to the bone is in debt to the mob, gets cut up, has her child carried off to be sold probably, and dies tragically and alone." The show then proceeds to practically talk through the camera telling us the apparition just won't be dead but deader than dead - non-existence - but can maybe rest in peace depending on how her existence ends somehow (what?). Please be sad.

Like with the rest of the show, the direction is on point - the silent montage with light musical accompaniment is probably the best way to go about adapting this, and the ballet sequences are an impressive sight. The one emotionally resonant moment in the whole sequence for me is the mother just standing outside her door, staring at her key, wondering if she can go in. The door bursts open, her daughter slams into her, and all her anxieties are blown away in an instant (and maybe that was more intrigue because I didn't know what to expect on the other side). The rest is very by the cards - child/family visceral brutality is very low-hanging fruit. It achieved a reaction but I wasn't at all impressed. I've played knifey-spoony before.

On a more general note, I'm not a fan of turbo granny becoming an expository-dealing sidekick. There's really no reason she should know, be able, and be willing to communicate the finer details of the mechanics of the spirit world to people she hates who are also her captors. There's this bit from Jujutsu Kaisen a few years back that stuck with me, where the show laughed at both the characters and the audience for considering for even a moment that cursed spirits and the like would readily cooperate with humans. This kind of discrepancy is especially apparent this episode where the fun time, action rom-com is trying to sell itself as also able to tell a serious story.

Anyway, I'll be back next week.

What a great episode. I somehow missed it on the first watch that silky was working as a cashier and an escort. So the people that attacked must have been human traffickers, and they probably trafficked her daughter :(

Is there a lot of sexual stuff like the witch granny thing talking about sucking the boy's weenie and aliens with boners in later episodes? Is that like part of the quirk/charm of the show? Only seen the first episode. Not sure what to think of it

Edit: Just read the posts in this thread, I guess the over the top pervy-ness is part of it. Ep 1 wasn't really captivating aside from art

So far no. The granny stuff is slightly related to her backstory.
Eps 4 spoiler
she consoles the spirits of murdered rape victims

The first episode lays it in the thickest, after that it's more like joking about it and sex stuff being used as an insult, there's nowhere near as much space aliens in human suits with torture dildos or the main characters being stripped down since then.

Saw the anime pop up after I’d just got caught up on the manga and damn is it delivering! That intro just has such a good vibe to it.

The development of this series was pretty cool to learn about. Apparently Yukinobu Tatsu had a couple other mangas not work out and his editor encouraged him to just go wild with ideas. DanDaDan spawned from one of them asking “What if a ghost stole your balls” or something along those lines while they were workshopping ideas. Now here we are and man is he taking that idea and running with it at 100km per hour xD

What is weird is this girl almost gets gang raped but carries on with basically no trauma from the experience. I feel that we have evolved to where if you are gonna have a fan service scene like that you should at least have to deal with it in a realistic way, if only for a scene.
I feel like the euphoria of activating super powers and absolutely obliterating your would be rapists before they could do it would help a lot. Helplessness is a major factor in that sort of trauma as I understand it.

I highly recommend the manga. I've been a fan from the beginning and the manga still is fresh and fun even after 175 Chapters. And the art is fantastic which is a surprise since this is a weekly manga

I'm someone who really cant stand this kind of shit, so trust me when I say that the perv stuff only happens 2 times in the first chapters, and never more (well, happens again in some very later chapters, but nothing rapey, just some person in underware)

It also helps that the alien from the first episode is later developed in an awesome way, becoming probably one of my favorite characters in the manga.

Ditto. I binge read the whole series and it just kept nailing it! Every character adds a great new dynamic to the group, so much so ya can forget there’s a plot going on. 100% a recommend to read or watch (both ideally xD).

The ending and episode dont match at all lmao

I legitimately burst out laughing when the flip to the ED started, like they had to have known, and made the decision to keep it that way, which just makes it hilarious to me.

Essentially "STFU stop feeling sad, shows over"

I might stop watching this until the season is over so that I can binge it or start reading the manga.

Episode 4 was solid.
Dude, that is what I thought as well. I am starting to get tired of how short the episodes seem. It seems like as soon as something gets going, credits roll...

It's deliberately storyboarded this way to keep viewer engagement, but I find it just annoying. I've been watching it every fortnight now, so I'll watch two episodes in a row then wait for the next two to stack. I haven't seen the last two episodes, I've been insanely busy with life/work all of a sudden, I'll probably watch 3 episodes in a row next week. :p

Haven't watched the anime, but read the manga up to Jiji (sp?) part so far... - which I think it may be the wrap-up point for S1?
What I'm most impressed is the mangaka - Yukinobu Tatsu and the quality of drawing. I mean, it's on weekly basis and he's not cutting any corners rarely. Amazing quality, especially his uses of perspectives in action and all.
Now I'm intrigued - that am going to give a watch. When Jiji sang Ranma 1/2's old original OP song in the manga, I literally laughed out so hard... ^_^ Some funny stuff, like Gintama reference etc about golden balls and all.
