Dark pop musicians in aspect of lyrics and music, anyone want to recommend any more? Satirical. Subversive. Just a bit edgy. Downbeat.
Lilly Allen - "The Fear"
I want to be rich and I want lots of money
I don't care about clever I don't care about funny
I want loads of clothes and fuckloads of diamonds
I heard people die while they are trying to find them
And I'll take my clothes off and it will be shameless
Cause everyone knows that's how you get famous
I'll look at the sun and I'll look in the mirror
I'm on the right track, yeah I'm on to a winner
...
Life's about film stars and less about mothers
It's all about fast cars and cussing each other
But it doesn't matter cause I'm packing plastic
And that's what makes my life so fucking fantastic
And I am a weapon of massive consumption
And it's not my fault it's how I'm programmed to function
I'll look at the sun and I'll look in the mirror
I'm on the right track, yeah we're on to a winner
...
Now I'm not a saint but I'm not a sinner
And everything's cool as long as I'm getting thinner
Marina and the Diamonds was close on a few songs.
The last dark pop song that I was obsessed with was that Tove Lo - "Habits (Stay High)" song (also one of the rawest pop music videos ever). Too bad the rest of her songs don't reach that.
Staying in my play pretend
Where the fun ain't got no end, oh
Can't go home alone again
Need someone to numb the pain, oh
Staying in my play pretend
Where the fun ain't got no end, oh
Can't go home alone again
Need someone to numb the pain
[Chorus]
You're gone and I got to stay high
All the time, to keep you off my mind
Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh
High, all the time, to keep you off my mind
Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh
Spend my days locked in a haze
Trying to forget you, babe
I fall back down
I gotta stay high, all my life
To forget I'm missing you
Oh oh oh oh, oh oh oh oh
Lorde is pretty consistent from modern pop to have a darker edge.
Lorde - "Tennis Court"
How can I fuck with the fun again, when I'm known?
My favourite dark pop song of all time is Just Jack - "Starz In Their Eyes". Goes in a lot about fame, much like Lilly Allen. Helps that I saw it at night on MTV 2 channel back when that was a thing.
They'll be making sure you stay amused
They'll fill you up with drugs and booze
Maybe you'll make the evening news
And when you're tripping over your dreams
They'll keep you down by any means
And by the end of the night you'll be stifling your screams
...
Remember they said you'd show them all
Emphasise the rise but not the fall
And now you're playing a shopping mall
Your mum and dad they can't believe
What you appear to have achieved
While the rest of these users are just laughing in their sleeves
Since you became a VIPerson
It's like your problems have all worsened
Your paranoia casts aspersions
On the truths you know
And now the tabloids use your face
To document your fall from grace
And then they'll tell you that that's just the way it goes
That's just the way it goes
There is Grimes, which is fantastic. Then there's Zola Jesus, who might not be conspired purely pop but is brilliant. Sia, obviously. She wrote the only Rihanna song I like that was used in the best scene of Girlhood. That little girl performance artist in her videos should be in movies, damn.
Bat For Lashes is amazing, not just because we're both British Pakistani
Can't wait for the new album.
Bat For Lashes - "What's a Girl To Do?"
Bat For Lashes - "Daniel"
Bat For Lashes - "In God's House" (new album)
