Death Stranding IP Now Belongs To Kojima Productions

iu

Kojima Productions has announced that the Death Stranding IP now belongs to the developer.

The announcement, which came via automaton-media, read, “In addition, KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS announced that the IP for this work will belong to the studio. They said that they will continue to connect more fans around the world in various forms of entertainment”.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach is scheduled to release for the PlayStation 5 in 2025. However, recent news could suggest that the game could launch on day one on the Xbox platform and PC, too, if PlayStation didn’t get some form of marketing/exclusivity deal.

Writes a lot, says very little
Did it not sell well?
I think it sold amazing for them, Sony may have had a deal in place to sell back the IP after a certain time frame.

I mean, this is Kojima we are talking about, Sony wouldn't even do such a deal with Insomniac regarding Sunset Overdrive (ironic considering they bought them and own the IP anyway lol)

So I think they probably had something in place for a while now and the time frame of what ever deal they had has occurred.

Sony still makes money with Decima engine, but good that Kojima wants to take the IP and evolve it. It's better than be done with the game and let it to rot in the Sony IP Vault.

I did think it was doo doo when I played the og. I owned the death stranding ps4 pro. Big kojima fan but the first couple of hours didn't grab me. but it looks great. I own directors cut on ps5 and xbox/pc now.
I can try it on ultra wide

This is very valid criticism for the game.

The first 2 chapters put off many players, and even the Death Stranding community unanimously agreed that it was bad pacing, incredibly slow.

But once you get past that, it's an incredible ride, throughout. The gameplay loop is amazing.

MGSV is still his best, but this is no short of excellence.

I'm confused, wasn't this IP always belonged to Kojima?

I'm pretty sure it was at least partially owned by PlayStation (maybe fully?) because they helped fund his studio getting setup to make that first game. It seems to have done well enough over time that Kojima had the money to buy out the IP rights from Sony. From Software did something similar with Elden Ring a while back, buying the IP from Namco.
