Disney wants to join Metaverse

So I've been thinking about virtual Disney parks a lot lately and just came about this article. I've wanted to walk around a virtual Disney park since I rented Adventures in the Magic Kingdom for the NES when I was a kid. Disneyland Adventures on Xbox was a great recreation of Disneyland but didn't really let you ride the rides, they were just mini games. I'd love a newer version that included ride POVs, Galaxy's Edge, and DCA. A version for Oculus Quest would be freaking awesome as well.

DEADLINE: When you were speaking at the Legends ceremony on Friday, you dropped a little bit more of what seemed like a serious next phase for the Walt Disney Company. You said Disney+ and some of your other platforms, we are going to make things interactive. This has been floating around for a while — you even brought Mike White on board to facilitate it — but is the metaverse the future of Disney?

CHAPEK: (laughs) We call it next-gen storytelling. We tend not to use the M word too often, because it has a lot of hair on it. But yes, Disney+ will not just be a movie-service platform, but it’s going to become an experiential lifestyle platform. A platform for the whole company to embody both the physical things that you might be able to experience in a theme park, but also the digital experiences that you can get through media.

DEADLINE: That sounds like a very big swing, but how does it work on a practical level?

CHAPEK: Here’s how. So, we wish every person would have the opportunity to come to our parks, but we realize that’s not a reality for some people. In order to reach the 90% of people that will never ever be able to get to a Disney park, we have before us an opportunity to turn what was a movie-service platform to an experiential platform and give them the ability to ride Haunted Mansion from a virtual standpoint. The utility isn’t just to have the same experience. Maybe we’ll give them the opportunity what every single person in the park wants to do, and unfortunately too many of them do it, just to get off the attraction. See how it works, see how those ghost dancers move…

Being able to get off the ride, mid-ride, and look at everything virtually would be pretty cool. I hope they actually do this.

It would be one of the most boring things that can happen.

The human being needs to interact and what makes Disney magical is knowing it and being in its theme parks, what is the point of being with a VR System observing artificial or non-existent things?

Chapek must already leave Disney. As CEO he is useless.

I don't know about you but when I go on vacation, it's to explore other parts of the world with people I love. That's the real reason, the attractions/destination are second. This quote reads like a cartoon villain telling us his plan to get more money.

Exactly, since he is talking about people that do not visit Disneyland. They might not be able to effort 400€ for tickets alone but 50€ for virtual pass - why not?

This seems to be where they are going with some of their rides already. Avatar is already just a VR experience, only while sitting on a motorcycle thing that can tilt. The problem is that rides with no feedback other than visual are completely boring.

Cringe.

Be sure to spend at least a billion dollars before you realise its vapourware.

Here you go OP, enjoy your 3-hour vacation:

I actually do have those running in the background sometimes while I'm doing other things. Not the same as being able to move around the park yourself like in Disneyland Adventures.

I have a feeling a lot of the people responding on here aren't really fans of Disney parks to begin with. It's something I grew up with and love and being able to explore them virtually is something I'd like. Not as something I'd pay for as a single day, but if it was added to Disney+ or released as a buy once "game" I'd definitely be on board since I can only get to the parks maybe once a year living in the midwest.

I prefer Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios, personally. I've vacationed to both parks like 5 times.

Wouldn't the graphics and draw distance be ass? Or did they upgrade their engine since?

why would anyone be surprised? Disney, like all other money grabbing company, only have one goal and that's to make money. they can afford to invest into the Metaverse (barf) just to have the exposure and just in case that it would pay out big, so why won't they do it? I think FB/Meta is the worst thing in the world and I'm no big fan of Disney either, but business will business. there's no good or bad to a company covering it's bases.

IoA is awesome, my next trip to Orlando will be the Universal parks, Sea World, and possibly Busch Gardens. I'm sure my oldest (13) will like those parks more than Disney, but my youngest is 2 and Disney has way more that he can ride. I lived less than a mile from Disneyland when I was little and visited all the time, so it's nostalgic for me.

I'd be lying if I said I haven't done a low, slow fly over of the parks in MSFS just to be reminded of them and would LOVE a high res texture pack to clean it up.

A VR experience would be awesome, but you can already youtube most of it and quote frankly I last about 10 minutes before getting bored. I don't think i would pay for It nor do I have any confidence Disney could capture the magic with vr.

No, it is not fair that they want to earn millions of dollars for something artificial.

The magic of Disneyland is visiting the attraction and seeing the technology, the magic of the amusement park.

What's the point of buying "Tickets" for an artificial Disney?

It's like if a tourist wants to go to a country and they give him a VR option... it's not the same.

Well, I follow the Vtuber Ironmouse, and she has common variable immunodeficiency and thus it’s life threatening for her to even leave her room. Things like this are nice as it could let her get some of the experience of an amusement park, even if obviously yes it’s not the full experience. Yes, obviously most people would never take this option over going in person, but it’s important to remember some people out there do not have that option.

edit reading comprehension fail on my part.

Hey guys remember those movies from the 60/70/80’s with the evil mega corp being more powerful than the governments.

Thank goodness we learnt from that. Ohhh boy. We dodged a big bullet.
