Do you still play at 1080p by choice ?

According to the October 2024 Steam survey, 1080p continues to be the dominant resolution at 59%,
1440p at 27% and 2160p at 4%

* 1080p includes its 16:10 and 21:9 version
* 1440p includes its 21:9 version

The main GPUs are more powerful than the xbox series S others are in the same league as the ps5 and xbox series x but they prefer to play at 1080p on ultra or 1080p 120 144 than consoles settings at console resolution (2160p 30fps 1440p 60fps)
It doesn't seem to me that the reason for playing at 1080p is poverty, it's more like 24'' 1080p is a sweet spot that prevents any upgrade other than to another display with 24'', perhaps OLED

What are your thoughts?

I think I will stay with 1080p forever unless they stop selling this technology, maybe they change the format but the 2 million pixel range will still be there.

I still play at 240p by choice

Generally split between 1080 and 1440, even though I have a 1440 monitor. Of course, I'm also a degenerate who is comfortable playing in a small windowed mode. Graphical strength is usually not a point of interest for me.

I actually dug out my older 1080p tv to play FF7 rebirth in performance mode on base ps5 as it was blurry as hell on my 4K TV. I could still put it at a lower res on my 4K TV, but I choose to go through the game in 1080p on a natively supported TV. It was a lot better that way.

Playing 1080p by choice implies the person has a 1440p or 4K option laying around and was like "Nah, I wanna see the jaggies."
I disagree, most vga that are used with 1080p monitors according to steam are rtx 3060, rtx 4060 ti etc all capable of running DLSS making 4k possible, staying at 1080p is just choice.

remembering that steam captures the resolution of the desktop, in games the person uses virtual resolution, ssaa etc. there are no jaggies.

Not on PC but yes on console. The consoles no longer have enough grunt to perform well at 4k and my old plasma has better motion clarity anyway.

On PC, I use a 3440x1440x165 monitor with a 2080 Ti. It's getting a bit long in the tooth though.

Well the display is 1080p (old Samsung tv), but I believe it gets super sampled by the ps5? Im not tech saavy so not sure. But it looks clearer on games that say it runs like 1440p mode, even when the tv 1080.

Alienware Fast IPS 24.5 inch 1080p 240 hz and sometimes will use my Dell Curved Gaming monitor VA panel 32 inch QHD 165 hz. Love them both but will say supersampled graphics look sharper on the 1080p screen.

Unless I have no other choice, then no. 60fps is my main priority though. If that means a 1080p resolution, I will choose it over 4k 30fps. 1080p isn't so bad from the right distance.

I do use one of my old 1080p monitors to control my music so technically i play stuff with it i guess?

Seems like theres a lot of people who just use what they had lying around, all of my friends are still at 1080p, resistant to upgrade since they feel their old monitors still work fine, at 24inch it still has decent pixel density. Its weird since those same people feel the need to buy a new TV every 4ish years.

To be fair i dont think an average person knows what "display resolution" even is or if/why it matters, i think most only care about the size.

I need my frames. I've seen higher resolutions but I still prefer higher framerates

Thats going to change when the 5080 hits the shelves. It's going to be a glorious upgrade and I can't wait

Yeah I'll upgrade monitors with 50xx series. I've been waiting for monitor tech to catchup and there's quite a few 1440p oled monitors now. 2 years ago it was slim pickin's.

I have a 4k monitor and it depends what im playing. Consoles I jist go for the 60fps mode if possible so alot of the time 1080p there. On PC it depends, I have a 3060ti so newer stuff im just about scraping by at 1440p with a few lower settings and dlss, but I find myself playing games from the last 2 gens in recent years so can pump 4k on alot of them.

I do like 2k,4k its a jump but sort of wish I never see them, I was happy as fuck on 1080p and the hardware lasts alot longer, its what everything ends up at with time aswell, if I want to run my 3060ti into the ground I know I soon will have to accept 1080p anyway and the consoles head that way anyway if you want higher frames. I used to upgrade more often and was thinking of a rebuild next yr but I get so little game time now days

I have no problems with my 1080p screen personally. it also gives me a lot of choices, I can either play native 1080p DLAA, or enjoy super high framerates with very intensive ray tracing at 1080p dlss quality (doesn't look that bad when I move just a bit away from my screen. I played cyberpunk 2077 with path tracing this way). if the VRAM is not a concern I just use DLDSR 1440p / DLSS Quality/Balanced/Performance which ends up providing better image quality than native 1080p (even the performance option). having 144 hz container and VRR/LFC always makes things smooth for me at any random framerate as long as the frametimes are stable

some games still look great at 1080p output (ratchet and clank), some games can look horrible. it depends. 8 GB VRAM is severely limiting, you just can't use 4K output freely without having heavy compromises. even not enabling certain ray tracing effects on capable RTX GPUs are a compromise by itself. for example star wars outlaws runs fine on 1440p/DLSS quality or 4K/DLSS performance on 8 GB cards but I see much more texture problems compared to how it runs at 1080p. in alan wake 2, running the game at 4K output on 8 GB GPU can literally cause trees to turn into blobs randomly while playing. so all in all I have personally given up on 4K for modern games, especially since I also don't like to disable ray tracing most of the time to gain back VRAM (because it is also a choice by itself. I priotirize ray tracing over resolution personally at this point)

1440p can somewhat work, it worked in alan wake 2. problematic in outlaws. probably will be problematic going forwards. I just don't like the concept of 1440p in general though. I don't have that great of a budget, I just don't want to get a 1440p screen as I don't think I will like it there. I aim to get a 16-24 GB GPU and 4K screen but won't be doing so as long as my 3070 keeps living. I like it as a flexible dynamic 1080p/1440p card and the occasional 4K gaming for older titles

Oftentimes, on smaller monitor like 24”, 1080p looks pretty damn good already. I would play games on 1080p if it gives me better fps over very choppy 1440p or 4k.

I am a console pleb. I care about 60 fps. 4K is great and all but I do not need it. I don't care about Ray Tracing, either.

1080p is fine.
1440p is the luxurious sweet spot.
4k is both gaudy and stupid, along the lines of something a Saudi Prince or one of the Paul brothers would think is cool.

I have a 1080p monitor in front of my steering wheel, connected to my main Pc as a secondary monitor and a 1080p TV in the living room connected to ps4/switch/potato pc, and neither of them looks worse than my 1440p monitor. It’s still good technology that I can use. But I plan to buy a 4k tv or monitor for next console generation/next pc build.

You can save a lot of money. If I was building a real budget pc, I'd go straight to 1080p. Most games look decent at 1080p. It does depend on the game, though. Anti aliasing and the style of the graphics make a huge difference at that resolution.

I bought a new PC with 7900XT along with a 27 inch 1440p mini led monitor last year. The monitor died about 2 months ago. The store kept sending me refurbished replacements but they were all broken. So in the end they gave me my money back.

When this mini led died I had to use my 1080p 23 inch TN again. You would think that I would suffer greatly from the downgrade but I got used to lower resolution in a day. Right more I'm looking at deals on 1440p oleds but to be honest I could wait another year or so on this 1080p monitor while the 4k oleds get cheaper.

I don't think the jump to 1440p was mind blowing for me. I mostly play indies, remasters and games from the 90s and 2000s so maybe I'm just not the type of the player that can appreciate the resolution.
