I am speaking about the fact that the Switch was sold out everywhere and scalpers used the situation to make a profit.

Don’t get me wrong, I know that Mario Kart is one of the most popular franchises (selling like no other game except GTA) but I think most of the players (apart from casual gamers) wait rather for a new 3D Mario. And I think that could have also easily made the console launch considering how long it has been since the last 3D Mario:

I think Mario Kart is is perfect for most players including the huge number of casual gamers, but considering that Mario Kart 9 looks so similar to 8, I cannot imagine that it will also be a console seller, because people will think twice if the update is worth the cost of a new console.

So I cannot shake the felling that Nintendo rather want to avoid the switch situation at launch and hope to increase sales (after they produced even more units), when they release a new 3D Mario later.

I disagree, its one of the few “ports” Nintendo actually put effort into.

For example, the original didnt have a traditional battle mode, youd play battle modes on standard race levels like toads turnpike and yoshi canyon but with dx they redid the whole battle mode from the ground up with actual modes and maps, not to mention all dlc characters/maps as standard, new dlc (so mk8d now has twice the maps of mk8) and the return of double dash’s double item box system.

Dont fix whats not broken and add new elements that fix the broken. It’s the definitive way games should be remastered and mk8d is one of the best examples of that.

The idea that Mario Kart 9 would not be a system seller is hilarious. A quick search claims that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the 3rd best selling Nintendo game of all time at 48.41 million units sold. An insane number. I think the opposite is true. Dropping Mario Kart 9 at launch is practically a shock and awe tactic. They want to make a huge impact right away like never before.

Mario Kart 8: Deluxe is at 64M sold on Switch. It’s the best selling Nintendo game ever outside of Wii Sports (83M) which was bundled with the Wii.

If you also account for the WiiU title, which sold 8M, Mario Kart 8 is at 72M overall for now.

There is so much wrong in the OP it's crazy. Not a system seller? are you kidding me. It will be another long lasting evergreen both the secure early sales (not needed) and promote longterm sales. Perfect co-op game for the system. There will be enough changes and gimicks. The only thing that might stand in it's way is MK8 still selling on the new switch.

MK can set the table for lesser games that need a better install base to sell well.
