Dodging A Bullet (Day One Purchases Or Lack Thereof)

I've been anxiously watching this Wii U launch from the sidelines for the first time for any Nintendo console. I know it's waaay too early to tell but something tells me I probably made the right decision. I hope I'm wrong because I would love to get back into Nintendo home console gaming after ditching my Wii very early in it's lifespan (with no regrets). I know that no launch is perfect but it seems the more we learn about the Wii U, now that's it out in the wild, the more it raises eyebrows.

Last time I got burnt on a day one purchase was Sega Saturn and I never supported Sega again after that. I would say the Wii was kind of a burn but I rather enjoyed it for the first year or so.

Ever play the sidelines on something you really wanted and essentially "dodged a bullet" because it ended being a disappointment? Ever get badly burned on a day one?

I didn't get Halo 4 day 1 because I'm just tired of Halo. I'll get it eventually. I got Wii U day 1 because it's Nintendo. No questions asked.

If you don't like Nintendo first party and exclusive 3rd party game there is no point in getting a Wii U yet.

EDIT : Of course you'll hear people disappointed online, the vast majority of people enjoying their Wii U are too busy playing it rather than complaining.

Yeah, $300 on a VR headset back in the late 90s. That's why I'm definitely taking the sidelines on the Oculus Rift.

NYCrooner missed out on Xenoblade Chronicles. :(

Us Vita owners use that line all the time, too. It never gets old. :D (Of course, in my case it's the truth.)

I'm thinking after the holidays I'll reconsider jumping on board. I've learned to show some patience with going day-one on stuff I want. Mostly Nintendo and Apple. I waited out the 3DS and happy I did because the XL is way more up my alley.

Thank God for Wii BC because I did miss a few gems.

currently i feel like most of the experiences the wii U offers currently I can get playing my Wii and PS3....

but i'm not one for day 1 anything really soooo..... not in the way of any bullets ?

Love this rebuttal.

Nothing really good came out after the first year anyway.

My biggest "dodge the day one bullet" was Legends of Pegasus, a PC space-based 4x game. It was released massively incomplete and buggy to reach some sort of publisher-mandated street date and failed miserably. So hard in fact that the developer has now gone belly up meaning the game will never be fixed.

Why did I think to dodge the bullet, you may ask? Because of Sword of the Stars 2, another PC space-based 4x game that I did buy day one... and found it to be massively incomplete and buggy. Fortunately the developer and publisher actually stuck with it and released a patch or two almost every week for six months to fix things, then a little slower for the next six months. The devs recently gave the "all clear" on the game and it is actually good now.

I think it depends where you're at in life. 10 years ago when I was a student, I might have regretted a Day 1 purchase but things change. Now that I have a good career, the cost of a system isn't even something I think about.

Give me 1 good game at launch and I'll buy it.

I'm in a comfortable place as well career/finance wise that the cost of something under $1000 isn't a real concern. I'm bothered more by the hype followed by disappointment that comes from a day-one that isn't worth it. It can be a real bummer and can sometimes linger far longer than it should.

Wii U is shiny hotness sitting in my living room. The tech is amazing and I'm liking the games I picked up. So glad I got one.

Then I go to the Internet and its "a disaster" based upon a couple of issues I've never encountered, and built up through the groupthink of people who, by and large, aren't even playing the console.

I've been anxiously

Saturn definitely had more crummy games than it did good games, but it was pretty much the system to have if you enjoyed fighting games. No other system faithfully ported the Capcom fighting games as well. Not until the Dreamcast of course. It also had literally the best control pad ever designed for fighting games (Japanese/second wave US controller that is, not the bulky blimp with the original release).

Lol. The only games that I can remember that came out within the first year that were any good was SMG and No More Heroes. More of the better games were released much later.

Purchasing consoles long after launch is always the wisest decision. The system's cheaper and more reliable, the games are cheaper and much more plentiful, online is more fleshed out.

Buying consoles day-one is for those who don't really care about the system itself and just want something new.

Gonna have to spend $$$ for Xenoblade in case that's one of them.

I've almost bought Resident Evil 6 on day one.

But then again, I got Hunted: The Demon's Forge on release day. I didn't even pay for it, but the experience of playing it was similar to taking several bullets head on.

Skipped out on the 3DS, watched it drop in price and was very satisfied I waited on it. Didn't buy a PS3, bought it from someone for half of what it was selling for eventually and was pleased as peach about that too. Waited on the 360 until the Slim came out and I was happy there too.

I can see where that might be an issue but I've learned not to get too hyped for anything anymore. I try not to read about anything and when it does come out I'm usually pleasantly surprised.

In the case of the Wii-U, I didn't even know what kind of social features it had. While they're not super amazing, I do enjoy them for what they are. I also didn't even know that you could play so many games in Off-TV mode, so when I looked into it a little more I was really surprised.

Sometimes it's nice to just go and read about a product after you've bought it. There's thousands of people today that are enjoying their Wii U and not caring that it has less RAM than a PS360. It's nice to be one of them every once in awhile.

RE6 is much better than Hunted.

Bullets I've dodged...Blops2 recently is all I can think of.

I skipped RE6 and let my coop buddy buy it instead. I'm quite happy I didn't pay for it.

As for games I bought day one that I regret buying, can't say there is a lot on the list for the current/last year as I'm usually careful and read a lot about the games I buy.

I absolutely felt burned by buying The Third Birthday, Dragon Age 2, Xenoblade and Kingdom Hearts 3DS on day one though.

We'll see with the likely stories is people getting trampled on Black Friday for the Wii U if my lining up at Walmart on Saturday night was worth it.

In purchases I regret on day 1, Duke Nukem Forever comes to mind for obvious reasons.

I won't buy day one unless there's something I KNOW I really want to play at that time. So I didn't even consider a Wii U. If stuff starts coming out that looks great, I'll pick it up, and hopefully by then its a little cheaper.

I have actually never bought a console on day one. I always waited until there was 3-5 titles I knew I really wanted to play. Of course I didn't have any money, so maybe that was just an excuse...

...or for those that want to get the most time out of their consoles.
