Does anyone here play Kenshi?

I'm strangely fascinated by this game but the price of admission is too high for a "fuck it, why not"-purchase. It looks super scuffed but steam reviews are overwhelmingly positive and I've seen Twitch streamers put hundreds of hours into it.

But even after watching hours and hours of those streams I still struggle to grasp what this game even is. I even watched a one hour "starter guide" video and then I was still not really sure what the hell is going on.

So if you've played it, would you recommend it and if so: why?

When I first heard about it, I could already picture myself sinking hundreds of hours into this game

I can’t really say if it's worth it since I've barely played it

I bought a sex doll, but I keep it inflated 100% of the time and use it like a regular wife
Game's about being in a post-apocalyptic setting and just doing your thing. There isn't a set objective but is rather more of a sandbox.

You can explore, do battle, train your skills in many ways, recruit party members, build a base, engage with the different factions, and more stuff.

There's tons of mods as well, and a sequel should be coming soon.

So if you've played it, would you recommend it and if so: why?
I've played it but never got too invested on it tbh. It's a hard game to recommend because of how weird (unique?) it is.

I'll drop this here, gives a nice overview of the kinda stuff you can expect from the game:

It's incredibly tedious. It's like all those cool stories about Dwarf Fortress runs then you try it and realize all those tales were just some dude's headcannon.

What time is it?

I did get some Day Z vibes form that video above but was surprised to see it's a single player game.

Wasn’t this game on ModDB when they were the place to go for indie games? I’ve seen it before, but just like RuneScape and Tribes. I play maybe 20 minutes before I get bored. Main reason I don’t buy crafting sandbox games.

i throw it in the same category as games like Factorio or Beamng.

It's for a very specific type of public but that public will absolutely love it.

It's a "make your own adventure" CRPG. There's basically no main story or questline to follow, you just go around the world doing whatever, taking random quests, exploring, etc; Game also has quite a tons of mods that can extend its life or improve the overall experience.

Like i said before, its for a very specific type of public. You will either bounce off of it after a few minutes or find yourself playing for hundreds of hours.

The game is a lot of fun for a while but at some point you feel like you’ve done everything you care to. For me, once I figured out how to min-max the way I wanted to, that’s all I wanted to do.

For instance, there’s a desert town with several ore deposits very close by. You can make several party members do nothing but gather them while another character acts as a runner to the merchant to sell and buy food, etc. you can make an INSANE amount of money very quickly doing this while building your characters’ respective skills.

This is a game that can really reward the player for trying to break it, doing dumb shit, adapting weird strategies and just experimenting with stuff.

Everything that happens in Dwarf Fortress can be traced back

That's not exactly headcanon right?

It's one of the most unique games I've ever played. It's immersive and atmospheric af. Something about it makes you nuts a little bit.

The game engine is ancient but that's what gives the game unique look. The game design is magnificent and creative.
Our perception of art design is used to these fancy popular game engines that kinda look the same.
Developer achieved very unique look with Ogre engine. Can't put a finger on it, something about Kenshis landscapes lures you in and keeps you immersed big time, while making you sad and terrified about it's post apocalyptic world.

Gameplay mechanics are bizarre and creative, player progression system is very slow because you have to fail 79351 times, get slaved and escape again in order to master combat, inch by inch.

I highly recommend Kenshi to everyone.

And highly looking forward to Kenshi 2, although I suspect it won't be as unique looking as Kenshi 1, due to devs transitioning towards Unreal Engine

I always wanted to play it for the extreme sandbox nature but it doesn't have controller support and i despise using m+k.

I meant stories where people make up elaborate narratives to explain what happens in the game. The same thing applies to Kenshi.
Are they made up? It's been a while since I played it but the level of detail in the logs seemed more than enough to tell a story.

Game was kinda boring to me tho, I prefer RimWorld. :goog_relieved:

Snagged a cheap Steam key somewhere and am playing this now.

It's such a bizarre game. Very spartan and nihilistic, zero handholding. It just dumps you in the world and that's that. So I went mining (saw this in a youtube tutorial, never would've figured this out on my own) and out of nowhere someone walked up and KO'd me before I could even react. I couldn't do anything but watch my unconscious character bleed to death.

Most amazing part: no GAME OVER screen or anything after my character dies. The world just keeps moving while my corpse is lying there in a ditch, my death makes no difference in this world.
