Not sure if anyone else mentioned it but it’s currently $3.99 on PSN until 3/13. There’s also a demo. Curious how it runs on the base PS5. Gonna try it out tonight.

It's only just hit me that Doom 2016 is approaching 9 years old. This thread might give me an existential crisis.
When DOOM 2016 was new, the best looking 9y old game was Crysis. This was the era when diminishing returns started to hit hard.

When Crysis was new, the best looking 9y old game was... Quake 2.

When Quake 2 was new, the best looking 9y old game was probably Shadow of the Beast for the Amiga.

When SOTB was new, the best looking 9y old game was some blocky Atari 2600 game.

Some time ago a 10y old game would look completely obsolete, legit retro, something from a completely different era. Now a 10y old game looks nearly the same as a current one.

Wonderful game.

Enjoyed Eternal too, until about halfway through. There’s a tipping point where you end up with too many mechanics and it becomes a headache to play. It’s no longer intuitive.

Less would have been more.

DooM (2016) is absolutely amazing and always be. The better question OP is why the hell did DooM: Eternal take the piss so badly? How such a perfect game could have a sequel that is such complete and utter shite still boggles my mind years later.
Looking at Eternal and the new one coming out, it's like they dont want to make a Doom game. They want to make a Bayonetta or something like that.

The music is what REALLY hooked me in 2016, the rest is awesome too but DAMN Mick Gordon went hard.

For anyone else that loved the music and likes nerdy shit this is a great watch (its an hour long breakdown of how he got the sound)

Thanks for posting that, never seen it before. It’s crazy how much goes into making the tracks.

I played it properly recently for the first time and it really is a great experience. Especially on PC. Runs so damn smooth.

Just started Eternal a few days ago. I like that there's a bit more destructiveness on the enemies when you shoot them. Seeing chunks fly off enemies is very satisfying.

Eternal really does emphasize using your whole arsenal though. Guess people don't like that change. In Doom you could just run around with basically one weapon. Guess they wanted to dissuade that.

The presentation is always so grand. I'm very excited for Dark Ages.

i didn't want them in the game period. And I didn't have to level up in all the other doom games why the fuck should i have to now? Brutal doom is far superior than any of the new id iterations.
People should play that Brutal Doom map pack. Hell On Earth? I forget the exact title. It's fucking great and many times I thought if id had packaged this shit as Doom 4, I would've been more than pleased.

The original Doom is the greatest game of all time imo. But this and Eternal, I simply cannot get into, I've installed and reinstalled both several times but lose interest. They simply won't click with me. In no way shape or form do I consider them part of the Doom universe.

Never got into any Doom game besides Doom 3 but Doom 2016 and Eternal and Dark Ages looks pretty cool too but couldn't get into their gameplay. Wish there was more Doom games like Doom 3, Resurrection of Evil, and Quake 4. Really wish for a direct sequel to Quake 4 especially.

I love Doom but compared to Eternal, it was boring. It's too slow and brain dead. People didn't like the sequel because they didn't like the fast paced challenge. I enjoyed Doom 2016 for what it was, the gameplay loop is fun but I have also gone back to playing it recently and it's just like, where is the challenge, I got bored so quick.

There's nothing in particular I can recall to not liking about Eternal (aside from some vague memory of the general gameplay loop not being as clean) except for the Marauders. I absolutely hated this enemy and thought it was a blight on the design. Why the fuck do I have to wait to kill something in Doom!? While also keeping an eye on him so he doesn't cut me down until he decides I can hit him.

Tried to get into these games and while they are good I just could never get into them. I just think I'm done with FPS SP games. With friends sure I'll play and FPS game. Alone? I kind of got burnt out on FPS games as a kid cause it felt like that's all PC gaming had back then.

I'm on my 5th playthrough of Doom 2016 (I've replayed this game every year since owning it). Currently playing the game on Nightmare.

I'm almost at disbelief how good this game is. Everything is perfect.

The overall presentation of the game, the level design, the environmental variety, the graphics (to be honest I'm shocked at how good the visuals look - whilst the textures and assets are somewhat dated, it still looks amazing on my OLED), the music, and most importantly, the gameplay.

This game feels so fun to play, and I can never get bored despite playing it over and over again. I've clocked 70 hours on Steam thus far, and I don't see myself stopping.

Genuinely one of the all time greatest FPS campaigns to ever grace us.

Not my video but a great montage all the same:

Because it has nothing of that fucking sheit eternal super mario 64 jump machanics.

Honestly...9 years is amount of time between releases of GTA 2 and GTA 4. Just look at the fucking leap between those games. Now compare Doom 2016 to any modern release. Doom 2016 clears most games still. It's really sad how stagnant the games industry is. I'm just so glad I was there for the boom.

It's a very good game. I see the appeal, but I don't think it's that incredible, it just doesn't screw up at delivering a regular ass FPS. I beat it, waited eagerly for the sequel, then gave Doom a break after playing it a few hours.

I'll be back for Dark Ages.
it's a good game but gets massively overhyped. people love the corny dubstep soundtrack and rockstar vibes, they feel cool slaying those demons

I know a lot of people love Doom 2016, but personally I was never a big fan of it, even though I loved the classic Doom games. I played Doom 2016 and had some fun with it, but the combat was not to my liking. The weapons were not very well balanced and the constant search for ammo in a Doom game did not feel right to me. The controls also felt laggy, even at 60fps, so I had to play the game on the gamepad.

Doom Eternal was even worse. You really had to fight for ammo and the amount of jumping ruined the gamplay for me. I enjoyed Doom 2016 a little bit, but I had to force myself to finish Doom Eternal.

Gives me chills every time. This whole monologue is fucking sick. It's just so sinister and clinical, devoid of any humanity. Perfect writing, perfect voice acting.

Also how the camera pans to the dead body when he says "it's for the betterment of mankind", absolute cinema.

Special shoutout to the voice actor of Hayden, Darin de Paul, and the audio design.

Amazing line delivery and the voice effects are top notch too.

It’s always been Lance Henriksen to me😆
