Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake |OT| Timeless JRPG that's fun for body types A and B alike

Do characters gain new skills after lvl 20?

I just got the ability to change vocations and I’m wondering if there’s any reason to wait….presumably a mage that changes to a priest won’t gain anymore mage skills

I see that the stat gains seem to slow down massively at lvl 20, so good to reset one character at a time?
Yes they do, you can go to the ability and spells tab and it shows you which skill slots you've yet to learn. Iirc from the original game you keep learning spells on e.g. wizard class well into the 30s and hero had some in the 40s.

Where else would I wear it as a Body Type A?

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
So, when you select choice A/B it literally tells you A is male and B is female so why make the distinction to begin with and why are people pissed off about it since they still get their male/female hero/heroine distinction in the same single screen?

Also I couldn't tell choice B is meant to be female and didn't know what A and B was until I read the text. I was squinting to see a difference, is it class, nope same exact gear, what the hell, and it was mainly the hair being not so spiky/upright? Lol.

Just a bit of pointless virtue signaling. Doesn’t really impact much, however it’s worrisome to see Square Enix going down this path and I’m glad gamers are voicing their opinions and calling them out for it.

Btw they also censored some character and enemy designs.

Let's just be honest, people overreacted like they always do.

Where is this damn Slime in Lanson village?

I’ve tried every single time of day and can’t find him in the village. Is he not visible at all unless you walk around the village with fading Jenny?

The issue is that they are specifically avoiding the use of the biological terms male/female when it shouldn't even be necessary to do so. Why is pretty much the entire industry doing this with character creation all of a sudden in recent years? Some video game writers are even going out of their way to make sure they utilize sex/gender neutral language. Why is this?

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?

North East in Lanson! During golden hour just before night time

Just finished the pyramid at about 7 hours in. I took warrior/priest/mage and I regret the warrior so far. My hero is tearing it up with a boomerang, mage and priest with aoe but the warrior is single damage and slow as hell

The warrior has high defence has skill that can protect other party members, so it has its usefulness.

Yeah warrior seems terrible…I have one at lvl 26

Should i change his vocation, and if so, to what class?

I got my copy yesterday and put in about 4hrs today. It's excellent. It feels so good to hear Dragon Quest music again + all the classic sound effects.

Draconian is definitely the way to play this game. I went with Thief, Martial Artist, and Priest as my starting party members.

I have every ability but the last 4

Are those worth leveling up for? I can still keep his skills if I re-spec
Apparently the warrior has a high level skill that lets him do heavy damage to metal slimes and babbles, so if you plan to do a lot of grinding later then I'd say it's worth keeping one around

I think its good tank class if you invest on his defence and HP. but Mage and MC will do the most DPS....I would say its up to you.

Decided to convert my warrior into a Sage and I’m glad I did

It’s nice to have more healing / revival options along with all the magic spells

Rolling with Hero, Monster Wrangler, Sage, and Mage

Curious what my next Re-Spec will be, probably Mage into a Priest or something….

My current plan is, Thief->Warrior->Fighter,Priest->Merchant->Monster Wrangler, Mage->Gadabout->Sage. Yes I'm going to be grinding tf out of this game

My mage and priest will both become sages.

Still thinking about warrior. Might keep her since my mage/sage will get bikill/twinhits/oomph

gonna have to wait for a sale. I know its a total remaster. But $60 is a hefty price to me when I remember paying $30 for the GBC as a kid.
does this also have the monster medal collecting where each monster can drop bronze/silver/gold coins with their picture on it, and you could collect everyone.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.

Inflation is such a bitch sometimes

(GBC version came out in 2001)

And, sadly, this version doesn't have the monster coin mini game, it's been replaced with the monster arena / monster collecting mini game that's new.

I had this concern at first too, but this feels very modernized

Amazing soundtrack and art, the gameplay compared to dq11 isn’t that much different tbh.

Well worth the cost if you enjoy a great JRPG

Stuff like this proves that HD-2D could be worthwhile for main entries into the series of games like DQ and FF

I’ve been saying that for ages that they should have new entries using this format inbetween the major AAAA release cycle so we get a new FF or DQ like every year

If done right, FF6 and CT HD-2D could easily outsell the last few modern Final Fantasy games. Imagine them taking it another step further and doing sequels to those games after releasing the remake. Literal money on the table.

Yeah it’s similar to the approach Nintendo takes

BOTW type games or Mario Odyssey are lengthy developments and they add 2D Zelda’s and Mario’s in between to fill the gaps

I think it’s still important to have the ambitious AAAA releases to the generate brand excitement, while keeping fans satiated with smaller releases

The quality of a good JRPG is easily down to story, characters, and art/music with a good battle system and you don’t need insane production values to achieve it

Is there any way to show your characters during combat? I have seen images showing all four on the screen in battles but mines in First Person during battles and that’s my only real complaint..

Impossible to change it unfortunately, that's my only gripe with the game so I'll just live with it. Well this and the menus but it's so minor, I love this game.

Started this today.

Not sure why there even is a Quality / Performance toggle, the Quality mode looks sharper and seems to run silky smooth 60fps.

So I started on PC, and weirdly enough the resolution option is greyed out and set to 1080p? Does anybody have any solution to this?

Very weird issue tbh. Why even have the option if you don't want me to control it?

The game will default to 1080p (it's max resolution) in both fullscreen and borderless mode. It can do higher (stretched) resolutions in windowed mode.

You know what, the ultra fast battles could have been a bit more faster. The attack connecting animation takes half a second too long, especially considering the high frequency of random battles.

Other than that, absolutely gorgeous, the HD 2D style is beautiful.

Yeah, SX here. Been running the game on Quality mode. I don't even think this is the kind of game that needs to even stress VRR.
Interesting, I had read some where X didn't hit 60 in Quality mode. I'm deciding if I want this on Series X or PS5 Pro.

That's honestly weird considering it's a UE4 game and those can just render fine at 4k?
Yes, the rendering engine here is pretty barebones. Very strange.

I was able to find an ultrawide patch, which I linked to on the last page:

since it allows me to run the game at arbitrary resolutions, it might also work for 4K (though I haven't tried it). I'm running it at 5120x1440 now and it looks incredible. Literally just a drag/drop into the binary folder.

The highest battle speed is what the default should’ve been. Anything slower than that is just painful. And the worst part is the length of time between each attack where it prints the message. I know it’s old school DQ tradition and all but it’s kinda redundant to show an action happen, and then print a message that tells you the same information you just saw.
