Dungeon PVE Games

Are there any PVE MMO type games where you form a party to tackle a dungeon in a fantasy setting in first/ close up third person? Kind of like how Destiny is for shooters where you can raid together and tackle tough dungeons with various classes?

Dream game right now would be a game where there are central hub cities like an MMO with ships, events etc and then you can pair up in an adventurers guild or a tavern of some tyoe to tackle quests / dungeons and progress, pick up cool loot etc.

I know it sounds like a standard MMO but in my imagination it would be more like an isekai tyoe situation that's more immersive and where matchmaking would feel more personal and the action more responsive like how Destiny is for shooters. Vault of Glass tyoe dungeons with swords & sorcery.

I have no idea why this doesn't exist yet (that I know of) or why MMOs stopped innovating. Seems like it would be a hit.

I had a lot of fun playing this bad boi

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you were looking for, but it might still be worth checking out

For dungeons specifically: Wayfinder.

It is instanced multiplayer, but it has a dungeon running loop similar to a Dot Hack game with mix-and-match modifiers you apply when going back into new dungeon instances.

For more of a world setting, Guild Wars 2 or ESO.

None of these games feel like the action matters or are as visceral as Destiny for instance. Imagine like Dark Souls gameplay with a team setting.
Fair enough.

But it's the only games with similar concepts that I know of. At least as far as consoles/PS goes.

I'd love another Destiny-like game, but done properly.

How is Wayfinder since they changed directions with the game?

Didn't return when they decided to not make it an mmo anymore. (It being planned as an mmo was what got me to buy Early Access).

It is better in my opinion, because they focused more on balancing the game for fun and lessened the grind to a great degree along with making it more solo-friendly. Now you can join other's public instances or make your own instance for 4 player Co-op sessions (not sure if it's peer 2 peer but I think it might be).

The in-game purchases were all removed except for 1 DLC item. You can easily unlock characters just by playing the game without needing to massively grind anymore.

I think one of it's faults (aside from a very MMO-esque story) that's glaringly obvious is now the overworld segments feel a bit...empty, like there should be other players running around. Thankfully the overworld stuff is few and far between as the actual main content always seemed to be the dungeons/dungeon running, and that stuff is still very fun to me.

I'd mainly suggest it if you are looking for a Dot Hack-style gameplay loop, but not necessarily as good of a story.

You're describing Final Fantasy 11. Your choices and party matter. The world is unforgiving, and you can get your ass beat really fast if you don't take it seriously. That said, it can be a really rewarding experience as well, if you can get past the actual operation of the game itself.

Might want to check out Dragon's Dogma Online.

Fun for a few hours, but empty and soulless.

And it still has all the currencies included, that no longer make sense in an offline game.

Everquest / FFXI had that vibe before the MMO genre was casualised so that socialization didn't matter anymore, and you'd just go to your dungeon alone or with bots.
Maybe Nightreign will be what you are looking for.

This is probably the answer because I struggle to find or name games that are 3rd person action and have a focus on exploring dungeons and fighting big bosses. And I think outside of Dragon's Dogma, Upcoming Nightreign, Dragon's Crown there isn't much to think about.

Maybe Remnant/Remnant 2 if you want a TPS kind of dungeon crawler.

I would also keep an eye on this. Seems promising.

It's old but Dungeon & Dragon Online?

New World Aethernum could also fit that category.

Dark and Darker is online coop dungeon crawling.

Diablo 4.

Edit: why not World of Warcraft? Sometime the best answer is the simpler

Unfortunately it was inevitable. The genre's main playerbase aged with it in multiple regions, and most of them can't no-life MMOs anymore now with jobs and kids. The younger audiences mostly moved to games like Fortnite, League, and Roblox.

So they had to start designing around the main playerbase, which meant more solo-friendly content that won't take hours and hours to complete.

Even tho it's still in early acess, you might want to check this one out. It's kinda like World of Warcraft dungeons minus all the mmo stuff.

Who cares, it's fucking awesome. My GotY for 2024 despite being in early access.
As a mix of Phantasy Star Online & Diablo it also checks many of the criteria OP laid out and I would have recommended it, but bajouras beat me to the punch.

At a time when developers deliberately ugly bat female characters to avert the male gaze, this solo developed game should be put on a pedestal and celebrated for its jiggle physics.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but its an interesting project that apparently had a super successful demo launched recently.
Ill be keeping an eye on it, may be fun.

Game is good though and their next big update is adding Controller Support.

Holammer Holammer Some people can't handle cute stacked forest animals battling in Zelda dungeons.
