Emily Is Away

RagnarokIV

Battlebus imprisoning me \m/ >.< \m/
The greatest game I ever played in recent memory.

It's funny that shit like The Last of Us etc. tries to be this mentalist high art that will linger in your mind, Death Stranding will change the way you view life etc. but to be honest a cheap ass indie game done it better.

Emily Is Away

Emily Is Away has you log in to a vaguely hinted at IM and chat.

Emily Is Away Too is the unconnected sequel. The game ramps everything up a lot more and includes custom beautiful and classic web pages to view and interact with.

What's so special?

I first played these games in 2016. And I've replayed them at least 3x a year since.

I played them sober, and now I drink a few bottles of wine and play them to take me back to better days.
The internet constantly changes, YouTube doesn't look or behave like it did in 2006 for example. FileFront doesn't exiist anymore. Some online games have fizzled out of existance. These games are time streaming stuff.

Has anyone played these games? It's such an experience.

Also, does anyone want to add me on MSN?

Once it goes to facebook I don't give a fuck anymore.

BINARY SOLO

I played this game a few years ago and it broke my heart. I also agree that this left more of an impact on me than stuff like the Last of Us.

The only thing I'd say is that if you weren't part of early internet culture with AOL IM it may not resonate with you. But as someone who moved away from home for college during the peak of AIM and had a large friend group from high school that scattered to different schools this game just takes what life was like at that time and captures it.

I never played the second one. I think part of me was a little afraid of getting my heart ripped out again.

BINARY SOLO
I would have figured more like this, but ok.
doctor who pat GIF

Never heard of this, but it sounds right up my asshole. Gonna have to give it a try!

Side note, my AIM screen name was "Shigeru Miyamoto". I miss when random people would message me thinking I was the real Shiggy…

how well does it work on the deck?
Just downloaded it because of this thread, I don't know if I am doing something wrong but I cannot even start as the face buttons are matched to letters ? So probably this game is meant to be played with a keyboard and typing so not sure it will be a good experience on the deck

Meh, this game is the epitome of illusion of choice. Every time I try to go for the direct option, the character backs down and erase the approach. It's all very predictably and cliche.

Not really designed for Deck. You need keyboard and mouse plus the game does things involving your web browser and desktop wallpaper

I'm old. This game just seems like a sad cuck simulator, where you have zero actual ability to influence the course of the story. Maybe if you're of the age where you communicated via things like AIM it'll hit better for you, but I used to have to actually talk to people face to face in my day.

Just started the game and it's really taking me back. I'm feeling things I felt when I'd talk to girls on AOL/AIM back then.

You start as a senior in high school in 2002. I graduated in 2001, so it's close.

Already recommended it to people.

The first game maybe, but the second and third games have multiple endings.

Just be thankful you posted that here and not Reeeee.

You'd cop a ban as they only allow non binary posts.

Ended up playing through it twice yesterday. Just bought both sequels.

I haven't bought or played the Facebook one because I don't care for that.

Have you played the first 'sequel' yet? It's so much better and interacts with your PC in great ways.

Already finished it. Will probably play it again to see the other outcomes.

Definitely don't skip the facebook one. AIM > facebook but I'm playing it now and it's great. There's definitely more depth to it and it's only $1.99 right now.

I just can't "get" Facebook if you know what I mean. I never took to social media, and AIM, MSN, ICQ amd Xfire were the extent of me being social lol.

I'll give it a try now though, maybe it will click.

I think the story alone, at least so far, is worth it.

It's not too heavy on the Facebook aspect. I have zero nostalgia for Facebook even though registered around the time the game takes place. Have huge nostalgia for AOL/AIM though.

Thanks for posting this series!
