The US is running a 50 billion trade deficit with Taiwan. Trump doesn't like those, since in his eyes that means Taiwan is winning and America is losing. Whether or not Taiwan is an ally doesn't really factor into it for him.

we shouldnt impose tariffs at all. let the consumers choose between chinese manufactured goods and US manufactured goods. give a level playing field

I live in a third world country that bends over backwards for China, because they have no problems getting dirty and shake hands with the most corrupt of the world, an even more powerful China will be hell everyone else, not just USA

That would be the logical thing to do. This way you could mitigate some of the pain. All this is going to do is kill the stock market.

we shouldnt impose tariffs at all. let the consumers choose between chinese manufactured goods and US manufactured goods. give a level playing field

A nice idea, but there is no level playing field to begin with in this game. US workers will not work for the pay and conditions that Taiwan will, and employees are always the #1 cost in any business. Imposing the tariffs will incentivize manufacturers to not use the cheapest labor which actually has an equalizing effect. Just my 2c though, maybe somebody that studies this stuff can prove me wrong.

The question always is how much profit are companies like Nvidia making. I am in two minds about tariffs. Typically when jobs are moved abroad, the goods don't actually get cheaper. I remember when a local clothing brand moved their production to Bangladesh but the shoes still cost the same. All these designer brands are made in Bangladesh but they still cost $100s. If GPUs were made in the US and not Taiwan, the price may actually be the same because a 5090 can't be $5000. They would just make less profit. The fact that it makes things cheaper is not actually ever looked into. It would only be the case if they passed the savings into the consumer and why would they.
