Boring as fuck. I should try to watch it again but I've fallen asleep twice while trying to watch the first episode. First time I was tired so I brushed it off. Second time was in the middle of the day.

There are certainly valid instances of "ironically" consuming a piece of media, namely enjoying a work for the opposite reason that it was intended to be enjoyed. The product cannot exhibit any self-awareness of whatever quality makes it unintentionally entertaining, because it is usually the opposition between how the work portrays itself and how the consumer interprets it that creates the "irony". This entails examples like Garzey's Wing for its terrible but entirely sincere dub and Happy Science films for mockery of the absurd religious concepts that are seriously and reverently depicted by the films themselves. It would not apply to things like Code Geass or Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito, for whom their absurdities are varying degrees of deliberate. Basically, the ability to watch something ironically hinges on how the work presents itself, not solely the fact that the consumer is enjoying the work for being "bad" or "absurd".

I like how the show originally created the impression that Kirito started playing SAO to escape from the real world, but now that we actually find out about his real life it's just as ridiculously Gary Stu as in the video game, to the point of inspiring inappropriate feelings in his relatives.
Bonus Gary Stu points for adding a villain who's excessively evil and creepy for no other reason than to make Kirito look good by comparison.
I'm not even going to get into how offensive the sister character is. This show asks us to revile one guy for sniffing someone's hair at the same time that it encourages incestual fantasies. It's a loathsome story that aims to inspire muckfeeding hypocrites.

I guess I just don't find it very fun. Even the discussions around its "absurdity" are fairly mundane within the anime world. Like this week it was a bunch of posts about tentacles with nothing to really say about them, just that they exist, and are in this world. Same goes for the old stuff. Oh, there's dumb incest stuff? Big deal, I've slept through that plot before.
Perhaps I am just weathered and have grown callous to that sort of stuff, but I don't even consider myself very familiar or knowledgeable when it comes to anime compared to many other posters here. I can't imagine how many times they have seen this stuff over and over again. SAO is just kind of a bland show.

Well, at this point many wouldn't say the show is fun. It's moreso that we get to talk about it with people and laugh, hence it's fun.
Those are enjoyable and entertaining shows that animegaf pretends are bad because then they feel better about liking them (?) [citation needed]
That's why "transcendent" is a better term to use, as for certain shows traditional notions of objective quality don't necessarily apply.
It's coasting on the communal aspect. Anyone that backogs it and catches up later is going to miss out on the "expperience" here and just be treated to a subpar show.
I'll admit giving them credit is entirely optional, especially from the perspective of emerging audience reactions at the time of the original broadcast, but it's worth bringing up in terms of informing future discussion about a series long after the fact by introducing another perspective (which I believe is supported by facts, to an extent) some people may not have considered.
I can agree to this.
I don't feel like it even offers much when it comes to spurring interesting or entertaining discussion.

I prefer reading thoughts on older shows than ones that are airing now. Though half of that is probably because I want to watch the show on my own later.

So I watched this over the past couple of days. I went into this show almost completely blind knowing only that it was a space opera and seeing a picture of Lafielthat it was good. Already from the start of the first episode I knew I was going to like this show, I thought the narration added a lot to the immersion of the show and the OP was handled in a fairly classy manner too though that's becuase I'm used to OPs usually being silly j-pop and clicke character art. This show's art itself was pretty standard for its time though it had some stand-out mechanical animation at points. Not much bad however.
Moving back to the characters and the story itself, I really liked the character interaction throughout the show.

Also watching this in retrospect gave me some serious Gundam SEED vibes, which leads me to believe that either both SEED and COTS both took inspiration from the same source, SEED ripped parts of COTS or a combination of the two.

I understand the concept of enjoying osmething in a manner other than intended, but unless a creator specifically says "this is how I intended this to be seen" then you really dont know if it was all a joke or not. I have a very hard time bleieving that the Garzey's wing dubbers took that seriously. They were probably laughing their ass off at how stupid it was and decided to give it a go at selling it in that manner. It seems to have worked.
I agree. SAO to me just isnt fun. I have no appreciation for MMORPGs, have no interest really in online social gaming in general. The art style of the show is pretty plain and even the new world lacks charm judging from screencaps. The show just isnt very compelling even in a so bad its good way. Its just there. People seem to be enjoying it and discussing it so there has to be something about it but I just dont personally see it.
This is so hilariously true. You will never feel alienated if you watch those shows and post about it here. you immediately get everyone's attention. Try it!
