Fallon forced to change ‘Tonight Show’ amid Colbert ratings wins

Way back when Fallon was on WTF podcast he sounded like a man who didn't know who he was, why he was doing what he was doing career wise, and generally giving off a vibe of screaming internally. That said I bet that feeling is at its utmost now if execs are trying to puppet his schtick and mutate it into even more insincere antics.

Fallon fighting Colbert on Colbert's political satire turf is not the best way to beat him back in the ratings war. Focus and improve on what Fallon does best which is fluffy, pop culture schtick. NBC's two evening talk shows perfectly complement each other as it is, with Fallon's Tonight Show doing funny, neutral skits while Seth's Late Night doing the political skewering. It would be a shame to if they step on each other's toes.

Woah, shocked at the hate on the first page, why do people hate him so much?

I'm not american so I don't watch his show, but the few clips I've seen, the guy just seems super ordinary. Nothing to hate, just not particularly funny.

I don't know if they hate the man or they hate the idea that someone so bland has ruled late night over people who are generally viewed as edgier/smarter/more talented.

I never understood why the guy was so popular. Sure, he was inoffensive, but he's a pretty horrible comedian/performer. He is incredibly awkward, has no charisma, and giggles waaaay too much. The NBC heads honestly picked probably the worst person from the SNL cast to take over the show.

Fallon is morning zoo radio in late night show form.. it's just wacky fluff with little substance. I haven't found a single one of his bits trending on YouTube even slightly funny.. Even Seth Meyers awful deliver offers far better entertainment. Kimmel falls somewhere between Fallon and Meyers. I also never really cared much for Leno, but at least his monologue and bits could be funny at times, his interviews were atrocious though.

Carson, Letterman, Conan, Ferguson, and Colbert are far superior to any of the above mentioned in my opinion.

People here mostly misunderstand the appeal of late night shows. The point was Carson would get you an interview with a celebrity that was fun, and made them seem like real people you could talk to. You'd laugh with them, and that was different than canned interviews that were basically ads. Leno and Letterman (towards the end) lost that, but Fallon's YouTube style, celebs-playing-games thing brought back the fun interviews.

I think I remember one interview on Leno that could've straight up been a commercial. Fuck that noise, I'd rather watch The Rock lip sync to T Swift since at least it's not selling me something.

(Fallon deserves all the shit for that Trump normalization though)

he's actually a heavy alcoholic off screen so I wouldn't be surprised if this was still the case.

i miss craig ferguson. wish he was still on instead of corden. even moreso than colbert I think ferguson could really rope in the conversationalists. you got to see the real personalities of these celebrities as they were caught off guard by the lack of structure. very fun interviews.

As much as I prefer Colbert over Fallon, who knows how permanent this lead will be? Different people seek out different commentary. Fallon trying to go the political route would probably seem copy-cat-ish at best at this point. There are people who want Fallon's chuckle-a-second persona and there are people who want more substantive coverage like what Colbert is currently providing. There can be room for both. Grand changes to compensate recent, slight declines could end up backfiring hard.

Havent seen colbert since his awful first year. If his ratings are up then I assume he went back to the Colbert Report style format? Ill have to start watching if thats the case (last week tonight has been pretty terrible lately)

I don't know why people were surprised at the Fallon-Trump thing. Fallon's show is pretty much a platform for commercials. Every interaction with a guest on his show is about the thing that they're there for. It's not like Conan or even Kimmel where they're mostly just having fun with each other. That's also why so many people feel Fallon is dishonest/fake, every interaction is basically a commercial.

No, he'll never be going back to that format. It's the same as when you stopped watching.

But he's gotten more comfortable and grown into it. And a majority of the comedy is politics-based.

Fallon's show is the most bland crap you can find on tv late night. I get that it's feel good, and I used to enjoy watching it every once in a while. Nowadays his constant laughing at everything and just his whole schtick irritates me. The Trump interview pushed me towards really disliking him.

Really happy for Colbert! He's really hit his stride recently and hasn't taken his foot of the gas.

Yeah just about any time I watch a clip of Jimmy Fallon's show I get the impression that he's faking excitement. I'm sure all the late night hosts fake excitement quite a bit but it feels way more obvious with Fallon.

That Trump interview incensed me so much that I'm not even interested to give him clicks on YouTube.

That interview was really the last video I watched with him in it.

Tonight Show could have had it but they decided Conan wasnt good enough for the show... so now there is Fallon..and I honestly dont get the hate for him, he isnt the best host ever but he does a good job...

Seems the hate is a combination of the Trump thing and the fact many find bland, unfunny and uninteresting. Bear in mind there were people who didn't or hated like him before trump was a thing, the Trump was the final nail for some people.

I never expected Fallon to be political, so I haven't been surprised that he hasn't been. Jimmy is a goofball who wants to make people happy. He wants everyone to like him. It's part of why I find his comedy so boring, and why I've always chosen others to spend my late night with. Beyond the occasional song parody or lip sync contest, I've never found him to be a particularly interesting comedian or interviewer.

His inability to read the zeitgeist and respond to it doesn't really surprise me, either. He's been stuck in the 90's since the 90's.
But Saved by the bell......

His dick sucking ass kissing and fake laughter at unfunny jokes just makes me cringe.
This.

You watch the show first and Fallon seems like a swell guy, but sooner than later these patterns become obvious and you can't unsee them. Not sure how they want to move forward, but the frat boy spiel is pretty much all he got.

Maybe Fallon is a nice guy. I don't know. In that case I apologize.

BUT...he is incredibly annoying. With his constant fake/forced laughs, the way he does anything for money, the way he interacted with Trump says a lot about him as a person. I don't want to say I despise him but someone who forgets about ethics, doesn't give a sh... about where he stands as long as the money keeps rolling in, is not someone I regard highly.

Colbert on the other hand. Well he's the man. I can tell he's an awesome person off the screen because he doesn't act on the screen. No forced jokes, laughs. Same viewpoints in his life he brings to the show. Bless him. So this news makes me very happy. And long may Colberts reign resume.

He should do more big skits more often. Like saved by the Bell

Jim Carrey ace ventura
Waynes world
Billy Madison class room

Should have one or two a week. Some can have sequels.

Those are usually his most viewed but he needs a good thing he can do with guests as well. Should hire someone that can give him better info on his guests and questions as well

I think it's a bridge he permanently burned.

That Trump interview was epitome of white privilege. He sat there, laughed and normalised all of Trump's horrible opinions. Pretty much everything he does now annoys me. I can't watch him anymore.

Seth Myers lines up a lot better against Colbert when it comes to politics. I'm just not sure he's a huge ratings grab. Seth needs a few more years to cook.

Conan not doing too hot either, which makes me sad

He's not in a position to compete in late night.

Am I the only one that absolutely hates his nostalgia skits? He does nothing original or funny with the concept. The whole skit relies on regurgitating old one-liners while fallon laughs in the corner. It comes off as very try hard and cringy (especially the saved by the Bell one)

Fallon sucks.

Yeah, I mean, I guess it's cool that he's looking to change his format, but there's not much he can do about the fact he's just less funny, less intelligent, and doesn't work as hard.

Fallon doing political jokes might be better than Fallon not doing political jokes, but it's not going to be as good as Colbert doing politics, so...

Not gonna happen. The late night talk show audience finally figured out how much of a gem Colbert is. I don't think there's any going back now.

I rarely watch late shows but a while back me and my girl stayed up to watch an episode for some actress that was coming on. After watching Jimmys shitty monologue, Jimmy was at his desk where him and his announcer (Higgins?) just kept making weird baby noises at each other and laughing for about ten minutes, I'm just sitting there thing what the fuck.

Fallon has always been really hyper and at times annoying but it's getting played out.

I watched him a lot during the Late Night days and he does have a good formula when he's on point. However, he seems to be increasingly lacking substance elsewhere. The fact that he humanized Trump was the tip of the iceberg imo.

He does know how to have fun with his guests, that's always been his strong point. But he needs to freshen things up a bit and learn to be a more focused interviewer or he's going to have problems.

His show is kind of an admission that he's not in the same interviewing league as the former titans of late night, so he makes up for it elsewhere. But it's getting stale.

I hate it too, the whole thing plays out like self-insert fanfiction to me.
