[Weekly software and hardware sales figures] "Super Mario Party Jamboree" tops the charts for two consecutive weeks! Many new titles released, including "Romancing SaGa 2," "Romance of the Three Kingdoms 8 Remake," "CoD:BO6," and "Sonic x Shadow" [10/21-10/27]​


Sales ranking announced by Famitsu. This time, we bring you a summary of the estimated weekly sales figures for game software and hardware from October 21 to October 27, 2024.

Seven of the top 10 titles in this week's ranking are new to the chart (four titles counted by platform) among them Super Mario Party Jamboree continues to perform well, with cumulative sales exceeding 300,000 units. It has topped the charts for two consecutive weeks.

Among the titles making their debut, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven recorded strong sales with the Nintendo Switch version coming in at 2nd, the PlayStation 5 version at 3rd, and the PlayStation 4 version at 6th resulting in three platforms ranking in the list. The total sales for the three versions was 114,891 units and it seems likely that sales will continue to grow in the future.

Coming in at 10th place is Sonic × Shadow Generations which was released simultaneously around the world and has already sold over 1 million units worldwide.

I think the visual style of RS2 helped it.

While I love Scarlet Grace, and Emerald Beyond, the character designs are not great across the board.

Got to be expecting a SaGa 3 remake now. Don't even care if they up the production quality a lot. Didn't expect it to do better than Visions of Mana on Steam but it did it

Romancing Saga 2 is bigger than Persona 3 Remake and Metaphor.

JRPG 2024 1st week of sales

1. FF7 Rebirth - 262k
2. Yakuza infinite wealth - 180k
3. Romancing Saga 2 Remake - 115k

Well it's pretty close between all three and RS2R had a certain extra platform to sell on (one that is actually alive in Japan, unlike Xbox), but yeah it has indeed outsold them in physical and likely digital ratios as well.

All things considered, I feel the success of RS2R and certainly the upcoming Dragon Quest HD remakes, will signal the direction SE should probably lean on going forward for mainline Final Fantasy games. FF7R PT 3 will probably still be a super high-budget affair, but there's 0% chance it'll be a PlayStation exclusive at launch. Very likely going to be a PS5/PS6/Steam/EGS Day 1 affair at this point, at the very least. Especially for markets like Japan, it just makes too much sense for SE.

Meanwhile I think FF XVII might be a game where SE continue with the style of RS2R and equivalent remakes, maybe with somewhat higher budgets but not astronomically higher, and probably going back to a heavily turn-based approach but innovations to make it "feel" active like a real-time battle system. And I think the reason they'll do those changes, is probably to ensure something like XVII can release on Switch 2 Day 1. So depending on when it comes out, XVII could definitely be a PS5/Switch 2 Day 1 title and maybe with PS6/Steam/EGS releases at or close to Day 1 depending on release timing.

The outlier here would probably be Xbox; I think if MS just go for another traditional hardware gen like they have this gen, the numbers will be even worst and SE won't see a reason to prioritize that platform even for a late port unless MS throw Game Pass money at them, which I doubt they'll do nearly as frequently going forward. But, if they make new Xbox hardware that offers something interesting to the market, and can cultivate a good B2P market for their type of games on it, then I think ports of at least new mainline FF games Day 1 (or close to it) are a lot more likely to happen. And, MS could also ensure they always get those games in some form if the next Xbox systems support alternative game storefronts like Steam, which seems extremely likely to happen at this point (probably through a revised and/or new Game Pass tier for soft-subsidized systems).

Two things I think has to be agreed on at this point, is SE are going to focus on multiplatform Day 1 support to all viable platforms for mainline FF games, and they'll probably adjust the production scope of new mainline FF games so platforms like Switch 2 can be easily accommodated for Day 1. Stuff like FF VII Rebirth, at least production/scale-wise, will be the exception and saved for only very special instances (and will also prioritize Day 1 release support via at least PS & PC, and potentially Xbox).

Great to see Romancing Saga 2 doing so well, I just started it but am enjoying it so far. The switch just casually boosting sales numbers is great to see, I wonder how much it will continue as we begin to approach the holiday season.

Both. SaGa is JRPG that is niche especially outside of Japan and its heyday was the 90s. Steam peak concurrent hit higher than every other game in the series on Steam combined. Every game the average critic rating is usually always sub-80. It's gameplay-centric. It's low budget. They're relatively high on the difficulty scale of turn based JRPGs. You don't even really have a main protagonist in this game. They die at least of old age and you pick a character to take over. Very influential on JRPGs. Super dedicated fanbase. Not a super well known IP but a beloved by its niche IP

Square Enix aren't going to back to mid-budget turn-based games for their main FF entries. That's why they have other franchises like Romancing Saga, the DQ series, and the Octopath games. To scratch that itch for turn-based players.

What they should be doing is making sure future FF entries are on as many platforms as possible. Switch2/PS5/PS6/PC/Xbox. Whatever helps shift units.

Hope Romancing Saga continues to do well as a unexpecting JRPG underdog. I never played any of the Romancing saga games both Romancing Saga 2 Revenge of the Seventh will be my first one.

I'm trying to find a reasonably priced copy of Nier Automata for the Switch, but it's all just code in a box nonsense lol.

I wouldn't say that's a certainty. Part of SE's multiplatform strategy (or, a reason why they're doing it) is to increase profit margins. So naturally to come along with that, you would want to lower production budgets where applicable so that the games are cheaper to make.

There's no reason why they can't go back to mid-budget FF games with more turn-based gameplay. Right now the IP is having an identity crisis, and SE want to see its market grow. Being exclusive or multiplatform isn't actually the main problem IMO: it's a lack of consistency in brand identity. Some would say SE threw out the baby with the bathwater when they abandoned turn-based mechanics for FF titles and, looking at recent major RPG successes that are turn-based (BG3, Metaphor, RS2R etc.), I'd say those people are right.

There has to be ways they can fuse live-action elements into a turn-based framework. In fact, I know there are, and it can be done in some very dynamic ways. I think games like Metaphor and RS2R are also showing that get in great sales numbers territory without spending nearly as much on budget. It would probably be smarter of SE to allocate out a large budget across multiple standalone expansions for a given mainline FF, versus throwing a whole $200 million or $300 million budget onto a single title where maybe you're only doing 30% to 50% more in sales with that one game than a much cheaper JRPG like Persona.

And, again, SE will WANT to get mainline FF games back on Nintendo hardware, they've seen how strong Nintendo are in Japan and parts of Asia. They've seen the global sales for Switch. They've seen how well their own games have been selling on Switch. Why would they want to make Final Fantasy an exception? Besides, with their new multiplatform strategy there's likely not going to be a case of SIE co-funding a portion of the game development (in exchange for timed exclusivity), so SE will have to burden the full development costs. Better for them to get Nintendo in the loop as a target platform sooner rather than later.

I mean, we agree on this part, if that's what SE feels is best for their business. Again, I don't think console exclusivity has been the "issue" with games like FF XVI or Rebirth when it comes to sales. Other PS exclusives have sold very well just being on PlayStation. I think XVI and Rebirth suffered from a mix of alienating design choices turning away big portions of fans (XVI) and paying for general IP messaging confusion/disappointments/delays etc. that can be traced back to XIII on the 360/PS3 (XVI and Rebirth).

So unless SE fix those two problems I just outlined, a multiplatform strategy is only going to benefit the FF games somewhat. It'd be like the problem MS has with Game Pass: you can offer it everywhere, but if the product itself isn't particularly appealing, that just means more customers get to reject your product.

I honestly wasn't expecting Sonic to be doing that bad on their launch either. I though people were saying it was good?
Perhaps people overboasted Shadow part way much that it forget this is a Sonic game and the main focus its on Sonic part. Or maybe the Switch version is the culprit, though I hardly believe this is enought reason for people to not buy it.
