I know a lot of these numbers are due to chip shortages, but it's not pretty. 10k PS5 sold. Oof!

And PS5 software still abysmal. One PS5 title in top 10 with 12k sold. Even those that want to argue that people are buying the PS4 version of COD to play on their PS5 (lol), that's still only a total of 41k software sales for the PS4/5 in the top ten. Ohhh but now we say that's okay because all software sales are digital now.

Not gonna lie, Sony is getting absolutely cooked by Nintendo in Japan. What the heck happened ?!?

I'm surprised Japanese gamers even know what an xbox is lol.

I kind of wonder what would happen if Nintendo’s next console isn’t well received like the Wii U or GameCube wasn’t. Do japanese games just stop buying games?

They would probably still buy Nintendo's next console (I think the wii u did better there relatively than the rest of the world). And also mobile.

Does the Japanese sales of Call of Duty really mean anything to the success of the game? It's not a huge territory and not the target audience.

Most Japanese people don't buy digital games and prefer physical copies of games.
Source?

Seems hard to believe considering that out of the biggest countries for console games seems to be the one with the highest growth in mobile (I mean smartphones here, not portable consoles) and they also live in smaller houses than the main western countries, so I assume they would prefer digital more than the average western gamer.

Just look at the state of the Japanese market. You can come 2nd place with sales of less than 30,000 copies. What happened to Mecca of gaming

They are all grown up. The kids grow up with manga, and anime. And the country is focusing on mobile games now, due to the work nature of the country.

Big N showing you how to make and sell quality games. The competition has to learn from them.

Physical sales of less than 30,000 in a week would get you 2nd place in every country not called USA. It has nothing do with mobile.

In other countries except US, 10K is enough to be the best selling game of the week.

Japanese physical sales alone is around the same level as UK, Germany, and France combined sales with physical plus digital copies.

Physical copies of Animal Crossing NH 2020 sold around the same level as the entire top 5 best selling games in UK physical+digital 2020 lol.

Japan 2020 physical copies
1. Animal Crossing: New Horizons – 6,378,103

TOP 5 UK 2020 physical+digital copies
  1. FIFA 21 - 2.182.694 units
  2. Call of Duty: Cold War - 1.420.353
  3. Grand Theft Auto V - 1.127.222
  4. FIFA 20 - 903.810

You can take a look at the shipments data of copies shipped from Japanese companies financial reports and then subtract it with physical sales data reported on famitsu.

Why did the COD numbers get singled out? It was the 2nd and 5th best selling game of the week, with the 5th one being on a console that no one in japan seems to care about buying games for.

Game sales as a whole in Japan, at least physical, just look to be absolutely tanking. Have to assume it's because more and more people are just playing on mobile phones exclusively.

Not about hardware but the dire state of software situation for PlayStation in Japan.
Nothing they can do when the astronomical ps5 demands means they get shipped abroad by scalpers. The point still remains though most games are still on ps4.
