[Weekly software and hardware sales] "Monster Hunter Wilds" takes the top spot. Total sales worldwide exceed 8 million copies. "Yu-Gi-Oh!", "Wizardry Gaiden", and "Okuniyuuuuum!" also got off to a good start [2/24 - 3/2]

Sales ranking announced by Famitsu. Here is a summary of the estimated weekly sales figures for game software and hardware from February 24 to March 2, 2025 in Japan.

The latest title in the hunting action series Monster Hunter Wilds took the top spot. According to the manufacturer the worldwide sales of this title exceeded 8 million units in just three days after its release which is the fastest record in Capcom's history.

A free title update is scheduled for spring 2025 which will include new monsters, quests, and additional content. The second installment is scheduled for summer and multiple title updates are planned, it seems likely that sales will continue in the future. The release of the game also led to sales of the PlayStation 5 console with sales of over 100,000 units combined for the standard version, PS5 Pro, and digital edition.

In second place was Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection in third place was Wizardry Gaiden: The Five Trials and in ninth place was Okayunyuuuum!, with three titles making their first appearance aside from Monster Hunter Wilds.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection is a collection of 14 Yu-Gi-Oh! home video games released between 1998 and 2004. Convenient features not found in the original version have been added and some of the games included are also compatible with online battles.

Wizardry Gaiden: The Five Trials is an upgraded version of the 3D dungeon RPG released for PC in 2006 and features six challenging scenarios. Okayu-nyuu-mu! is a pure love novel game starring and supervised by the female VTuber group "HoloLive's" VTuber "Nekomata Okayu" and both have had a good start.

Damn, I just fell short of my prediction for MH Wilds software. For HW, I was quite a ways off...

Late to the party, but here are my predictions for the MH Wilds launch week:
  • 50k - 60k PS5s (apparently the PS5 SKU with MH Wilds might be sold out?)
  • 500k - 550k copies of MH Wilds

The PS5 hardware way above my prediction, MHW below, great week for PlayStation, but Sony not having MHW/PS5 Pro was a mistake. The Switch keeps selling really good.

For comparison purposes

01./00. [PS4] Monster Hunter: World # <ACT> (Capcom) {2018.01.26} (¥8.980) - 1.350.412 / NEW <80-100%>

PS4: 140.432
Quite the drop from Worlds. I wonder how many players moved to PC and how many are waiting for a possible Switch 2 port.

I agree that not having a Pro bundle was a massive mistake. It simply didn't make much sense to me. I wonder if there was something to that as in revenue sharing that Sony didn't want to give Capcom revenue from the Pro.

My biggest pet peeve with comparing apples and oranges between now and 2018 is the rise of digital. All things being equal, you're going to see at least at 15% drop in physical sales due to the PS5 Digital having no physical option (unless we assume these people were purely digital back then), but even that being the case, you're probably looking at 30-40% decrease in physical sales since 2018 towards digital.

The problem with people reacting to media create/famitsu charts is that they simply assume these buyers disappeared because they aren't on the chart or make conclusions that they moved to PC or waiting for a switch port rather than the more likely reason that they're simply digital only.

Down 750k from World but fortunately Steam version is there to cancel out PlayStation tragic drops in sales for Monster Hunter franchise in Japan.

So, this Yu-gi-Oh! early days collection is what? A collection of old yu-gi-oh games?

Because if it has DS 2010 championship I would 100% buy it.

This post lmao.

This is physicals only. The game sold way above 1M in Japan on ps5 already.

edit: PS5 digital has close to 1M consoles sold alone. Plus the rise of digital sales...i wouldn't be surprised if the game sold like 1.3M in Japan or even more.

What's the standard PS5 digital ratio for software in Japan these days? Sales of 601K Physical should be well over 1 million with digital included shouldn't it?
IIRC MH World had a 30% digital share in Japan at launch, so I wouldn't be too surprised if the digital share for Wilds on PS5 has risen to around 50% or maybe even more, since about 20% of the install base in Japan has the digital edition of the PS5. So that's about 1.2M when including digital sales (maybe a tad more).

Famtisu sales discussion are weird. People for some weird reason just ignore digital sales.

I know famitsu doesn't report them, but people just take the numbers as is.
There's also the fact that Famitsu are...projections. They aren't even "real" sales. Remember when they were reporting sales for Xbox consoles around 15k week after week while Media Create had that console at 5k every same week? Then out of the blue Xbox sales on Famitsu went down to 5k and never went back to those abmormal 15k sales again.

For some reason no one talks about this because it's not convenient. Famitsu is not to be trusted for years.

Digital sales?
Even if the ratio is 50-50 still below World by a good margin for the first week of sales, and back then the ratio was 60-40, The ratio for Rise was 70-30, I think that being on PC day one was is the biggest factor here. This is a great example of why Rockstar doesn’t want to launch GTA6 day 1 on PC, could be great for front loaded sales but bad for the double dip strategy.

It's not weird. It's trolling or anger from "those" people. They know digital sales aren't included.

Yeah, but Famitsu is one of the best that we got. So......we really can't complain.

MH World launched around 2m units (1.35m physical and 0.65m digital)

By the time World released, PS4 was on the market for longer and much cheaper. PS5 is on the market at a more expensive price than when it released in 2020 (over 4 years ago) and less time available on the market.

PS5 has gotten how many price increases in Japan? 2? 3?

Context matters.

Heck I still question some Xbox weekly sales in Japan from famitsu. Some weeks I see it hitting 2k-3k, and I'm thinking there can't be that many suckers in Japan.

PS4 user base was smaller at the moment Monster Hunter World launched.

PS4 6.187.000 (Week 4, 2018)
PS5 6.666.457 (Week 9, 2025)

In that case maybe the IP isn't as strong as it was in 2018 or PC sales were stronger than in 2018. Who knows. Wasn't japan one of the countries where pc gaming was growing faster and faster?

The gaming PC market is growing really fast in Japan and The Monster Hunter IP still solid. That’s why we are having these results, STEAM numbers most be massive there, i think we misread the SteamDB info from the launch day thinking the players peak was coming from China.
