I loved this game, I got it and wasn't upset by the ending, that's what the whole thing was about. I don't know why Valve bought them only to not release anything else though.

"In a statement sent to Polygon, Campo Santo co-founder Jake Rodkin explains that since the purchase the In the Valley of the Gods team has basically melted away, with many of the developers instead choosing to work on Half-Life: Alyx, while others moved onto stuff like Dota Underlords." Dang

I can’t claim to have played a ton of indie games, but this would be my second favorite indie game I’ve played after Night in the Woods (also really enjoyed Shovel Knight, Super Time Force Ultra, Undertale, Party Hard, and Freedom Planet).

Edit: also, the PS4 theme slapped!

This was a big disappointment for me because the ending was a giant nothingburger. In the marketing they played up the story as a mystery that would have an incredible payoff, but nothing close to that happened.

I understand. I guess 9 years in we're past the statute of spoiler limitations lol. To me the real story was in the notes, the two people getting lost in the woods, and the protagonist instead being able to escape them, as metaphorical as physical. The woods being his escape from the reality of his declining wife, and escaping being able to confront it.

Would it have been a nice moment for him to have met what's her face, sure, but that was also part of the woods he was escaping.

I thought it was lovely and don't think everything needs a happy ending.

It's a nice game. Nothing special, but there really aren't many games like it...so maybe it is special?

Maybe I'm out of touch though so if people have similar recommendations I'm all ears to them please.

I liked this game a lot, but I also liked walking sims and listened to the Campo Santos' guys podcasts.

I bet if I went back to it, I'd find it boring today. And their podcasts are what the kids would call "woke".

ozz ex machina, try The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe (2022); its with more comedy than anything, I'm not sure tho

I did not like it. Most people don't know what walking simulators are. I've heard people call The Last of Us and God of War walking simulators, which is hilarious.

This IS a walking simulator. The genre is just boring.

Such a loss :( they made great walking sims, there’s not many to the quality of firewatch (and a bit of a drought of them at the moment)

Was a decent walking simulator but really overblown by the media. No idea why Valve bought the company. Honestly they put out one game that did not demonstrate anything other than decent writing, art direction and good voice acting. Gameplay was typical walking simulator stuff. They never made another game and I never gave it a second thought ,which I find is my response to most of the developers in the walking simulator genre.

I’m not going to lie, I’m starting to miss first person walking sim/adventure type games. This was a large influx of them for a bit and I really enjoy the relaxing atmosphere at times. Unfortunately it seems like game companies aren’t risking it anymore.

A massive disappointment to me. I expected something much better from the reviews.

The ending being just that people desire escapism when they are going through tough times to have something thrilling to focus on was incredibly boring to me. A game where "hey, none of the things actually happened. Isn't this subversive and interesting?" Wow, so I play a game where nothing actually happens, just like in my life? Money well spent. Next I hope to see a Jason Bourne movie where nothing actually really happens because the director has a dislike towards escapism. So we just have Jason running around imagining conspiracies.

Yep. It also launched in a very rough state on PS4.
