FromSoft passed on working with Sony for Dark Souls because they were disappointed with how they treated Demon’s Souls

Dark Souls 2. Has a Bloodborne NPC reference like if the two worlds were connected somehow, its Marvellous Chester and basically he says he is an stranger in an strange world like you.

Marvelous Chester is from the Artorias of the Abyss DLC in Dark Souls, not II.

I bet he's just as dissapointed now with the way Sony is treating Bloodborne... Seems like a repeat of the Demon's Souls treatment...

He doesn't seem to bothered by it. In the end, if they do it, it will more than likely be with him or heavily consulted.

Who knows how he's feeling about it, it's not like he's gonna state his dissapointment in a public interview and burn bridges with a publisher just like that. That's for western execs on twitter.

Demon's Souls is my favourite of them all, so far, but the game was not super popular vs what the series has become. I imported it, like a lot of people, as it was exclusive in Japan for quite a while with online Japanese servers, then America got it. I think the EU got it about a year later or something with the black phantom edition.

The game was always talked about in small corners, so the idea that Sony fumbled seems a bit disingenuous as I'm sure not many, if anyone, would see the success and status the series has today. Sounds a bit hindsight-y imo.

Modern gaming culture has become dredging up old shit that doesn't matter because it's ancient history, rumors and leaks reported like actual news, and AAA live service monetized corpo cancer.

I don’t blame them for thinking demon souls was going to be a bad game. It wasn’t until Bloodborne that souls games clicked for me personally. After that was able to play the older games and finally enjoy them. Increasing the speed of souls games combat made them a lot approachable.

As they should.
They did well not affiliating with Sony, at least after Bloodborne. They put graphics above everything, they more like graphic whores nowadays.

no, there's a bigger fumble after that.

Sony/Shuhei and From Soft patched it up and they worked together again for Bloodborne. But also during Bloodborne development, From Soft put themselves up for sale. And Sony didn't make a move. In fact none of the big publishers made an offer to buy From Soft.

At the end Kadokawa bought From Soft for probably very cheap price

Insomniac had about 20 years worth of hit games for Playstation platforms before Sony finally decided to offer the absolute minimum to buy them. The M&A frenzy has been a more recent phenomenon for the industry largely kicked off by a series of expensive acquisitions made by Tencent, Microsoft, and Embracer.

From right now is one the industry's few golden children, but prior to the Souls games they had a decade of mostly mediocre games. It was Kadokawa who chose to make Miyazaki president of From and they've had a near flawless record since.

Yoshida messed up (again) after The Old Hunter, and FromSoftware were pissed off (again), and they had enough of collaborating with him.
Now that Yoshida has retired, we can suggest that a Bloodborne remaster or a sequel might become a reality.

One of Shuhei's biggest fumbles imo.
The biggest, next one was setting aside some new prototype games in favor of things like eyepet and more of the same stuff

tbf tho, he stated that what he saw about Demon's Souls before release was really janky and didn't see it getting better, but what a major mistake on his part that was

Bloodborne basically is Demons Souls 2.
Nah, and this is coming from someone who has BB in my top 5 all time list.

Demon’s Souls encouraged thinking outside the box and item usage with most situations and almost every boss encounter. In that way it was much more like a Zelda game, because nearly every boss had a secret weakness to exploit.

Somewhere between Dark Souls 2 and Bloodborne, this creative approach slowly faded away in favor of constant rolls/dodging or parries as skill checks. Sometimes you’d meet a boss or two where a single item would give you a few seconds of advantage, but it was nothing as substantial as Demon’s Souls.

If a Demon’s Souls sequel were ever created, I would hope and pray that the developer understand this difference and not just make another Dark Souls 3 with a Demon’s Souls title slapped onto the box.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Huss, quiet you, you're ruining a perfectly good "Sony bad" narrative.

Hard to call it a 'narrative' when Shu, a person who would seemingly have intimate knowledge of something like this, claims it.

He must have done some real ass-kissing to bring them back onboard for Bloodborne.

Do we need you playing defense in every thread that doesn’t paint Sony as some infallible corporation that never makes mistakes?

Shu is on a media tour and spilling the beans. Nobody ever really spelled out like this what exactly happened after Demon’s Souls and there was a bunch of speculation.

It's amazing to me that From managed to stay alive for so long. Who bought their earlier titles, i sure as hell didn't (at the time). Their back catalog is massive. God bless the people who supported them for generations and the CFO who kept the doors open.

From is a GOAT-tier studio.

DeS started out niche and ran rather suspect. The beta build was supposed to be worse, I can imagine Shu seeing this and thinking no.

The game took off because of word of mouth and the English asian version was widely imported. But you can't really fault him. No one could see this franchise becoming so big.

Chester is Dark Souls 1 Dlc, which they made during early Bloodborne dev with Sony. They really didnt wait long before mending bridges. They signed that 3 game contract with Playstation after all.

I retain what I said though? Theres no point in showing me a game just for the sake of "actually". Pretty sure most don't even know they exist or even Fromsoft eralier games.
We are talking specifically Fromsoftware main games, either souls like games or Armored Core.
Bloodborne at the time was a good idea, since it was a different Sony. They probably gave full artistic and gameplay control to Miyazaki to make their game.

When you said this.....

"Yoshida has been saying a lot that almost comes off as getting failures off his chest or venting."

How is this implying that there's nothing positive to discuss about Sony?

I simply struck down interference on discussing failures.

Utterly nothing more.
