Flashless at the Golden Globes
I have no idea how I missed this in theaters back in 2014, but I went literally 10 years wanting to see it. Saw it on sale for $5 on Amazon so pulled the trigger two weeks ago, and finally saw it last night.
I gotta say it's not the best WW2 movie, but its got its moments. You have your standard PTSD ridden soldiers acting all crazy most of the movie. Some of the best scenes revolve around the tension between the new kid who just enlisted weeks ago and veterans 3 years into the war.
Best scene has to be when they takeover a small German town, go into an apartment to find a hot (seemingly untouched) German teenage girl, and get upset over who gets to fuck her. Wont spoil what happens but that was tense and made me wonder just how far this movie was willing to go.
The tank war scenes are amazing. The finale is ok, but the best scenes come earlier in the film with all kinds of practical effects and tank explosions. Worth watching just for those scenes alone.
My favorite thing about the movie is how they really hate the SS soldiers in that movie. German Army are typically taken as POWs, but they shoot every SS soldier they come across. And the movie gives you plenty of reasons through out the story to hate them. One such execution is my favorite scene in the movie simply because of how over the top yet satisfying it was.
Harsh Times, End of Watch and Fury. It's amazing that David Ayer made these three great movies then made Suicide Squad and literally disappeared. I really like the little touches in the movie about the german perspective like German kids being forced into combat, crucified for not fighting, and women being used as prostitutes by American soldiers. You dont see that in sanitized hollywood war movies.
All actors are great but Shia and John Bernthal were outstanding. Just not enough depth to their characters which is a shame. Brad Pitt and Michael Pena did good, but the new kid was great. The movie couldve focused a lot more on these characters like putting them in situations similar to the German girl scene, but they spent a good 30 minutes on a big epic finale instead. Got my money's worth but still felt a bit hollow for a WW2 movie.
