Read my mindyeah dont shit on me for this but sometimes he sounds like J Cole after he spent a year in the trap
I'm not saying he's not lyrical... I'm just saying that while its a good album it doesnt tell me that much about Meek himself. What makes Meek Mill's story interesting or provocative? I'm not really pulled in by the whole thing. So it's good, not great for me. it had bangers tho
Meek has a few deep songs, Kendrick has an entire deep album that somehow manages to still bang in the whip
YeahExactly. He does absolutely nothing to stand out. Nothing. He's a generic ass rapper with a generic ass lyrical content and generic ass concepts. He's background music at most. He can get a play here and there, but that's about it. He has potential though, if he ever decides to figure out what he's about and stick to it. His flow is nice and he has all the backing in the world. He may put out a great album one year, but that year isn't 2012.
I find it kind of weird sometimes y'all expect every rapper to be deep to have some merit in quality. I could've swore we had this discussion earlier in GAF-Hop where you can make good music without having some introspective element to it and being that "real" hip-hop. Sometimes it's single standard in here, sometimes double standard.
It's like criticizing French for not being introspective. That's not the point of the music, and it certainly doesn't devalue it because it's not something it's not trying to be IMO. I don't think Meek's tape tries to focus on a theme, just gives little blips of what he's all about, of which only a facet is the pain from his childhood.
Well for me i just think an artist has to have layers behind what he's saying to be 5/5 type dopeness. I dont care about introspection per se- just something with substance. I don't believe in dichotomies like real shit or fake. I can enjoy plenty of music if its not deep, but i reserve my best praise for the shit that does manage to have layers without it being overbearing and transparent. 3.5/5 is not a bad rating, thats how good i feel it is objectively. Subjectively i like lots of shittier music better.I find it kind of weird sometimes y'all expect every rapper to be deep to have some merit in quality.

I dont feel meek and some others in his lane because they try to do too much. Its very apparent to me. "heres the ladies joint, heres my street problems joint, heres my smooth shit, heres my banger", etc etc.
jack of all trades, master of none is the avenue a lot of guys that are in meeks position try to take (IE that dude whos got next) and arguably the only guy in the last couple years to actually accomplish that with tangible lasting success is Drake (may he drown in a sea of sandalwood scented lotion).

Listen to his mixtapes and its not there
But in the same breath you say Drake had success , which he did commercially, but the product to me was meh at bestLots of people do things because their label make them. I judge the product because that's what's fair. although yeah i still plan on looking up some of his old gutter philly shit.
I respect these critiques now that you've elaborated on what you mean specifically by depth (I assumed emotional), and for the most part I agree too.Well for me i just think an artist has to have layers behind what he's saying to be 5/5 type dopeness. It's not about being introspective. It's about being about something, anything. If you're going to wild out and be wheels, rims, etc, do it but do it big and bombastic. Meek is just ... dull. If you're going to rhyme about exciting things, be exciting. Don't bore me.

What Ech said I followSee, this and Ech's deeper write-up are valid, although Ace makes a good counter point. But like Enzo said, that makes a lot more sense than just "more depth"
What Ech said I follow
But don't really get it from Meek
Also I have heard Meek called alot of things but never dull
Meek's album is surprisingly good imo. It's basically what I hoped GFID would be. Traumatized it the best track but there are some big bangers on there like the intro, Believe It, Polo And Shell Tops, and the amazing Tony Story pt 2
I agree with this. Ross went too far down the "Ima-smoke-a-cigar-on-my-yacht-to-this-cuz-im-rich" music lane.
Love Believe ItMeek's album is surprisingly good imo. It's basically what I hoped GFID would be. Traumatized it the best track but there are some big bangers on there like the intro, Believe It, Polo And Shell Tops, and the amazing Tony Story pt 2

With an album name like that it should have been 50 percent trapYup. It kinda feels too comfortable, like the kind of album you make when you've already made an album that put all your peers to shame on the charts.

This is not bad.listened to most proposed/hyped/talked about LP's in this thread and love most of it.
i'll add something to the mix where i'm interested if production > lyrics. you won't understand it but in my opinion the production is exactly how i dig it.
i dig how his tracks unfolds inclusivly his voice/flow/production throughout the 5 minutes, this one is prolly my fav of his new LP:
Medium - Astral
the beat and the echoing sample in the background makes it for me:
Medium - Matka Planeta
don't know that much about the bloke so its just my interest how englishspeaking nations react to foreign rap.
Sounds like it could be a good track, just not a track I want 50 and Em to also be on.50 Cent Single w/ Adam Levine + Eminem snippet

sounds pretty garbage to me. this is the kind of beat that eminem loves but that is terrible for him. he goes full cheeseball mode.
These are my top picks too. Traumatized, Believe It and Polo and Shell Tops are fantastic.Meek's album is surprisingly good imo. It's basically what I hoped GFID would be. This is not bad.
You ever listen to ASAP Rocky? (not the best correlative example, just the first that popped into my head)
This sounds like a mix of clams casino style production, with some jazz/trip hop elements.
Very very cool. Love hearing stuff like this. Didn't know Bronsellini was big over therehuh, this is a comparison i've never thought of but it does sound a bit like clams casino you're right. The thing about jazz is a big factor in polish music, especially on a small label that produces most of the best rap in the country. Here is one more:

and i got to at least mention the guy who shaped the rap in the country with his 10+ albums over the last decades with instrumentals: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kdt9IDXJ6Y
and raps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQU34NhB9Ec
this one features Brother J of Brooklyns X-Clan.
Since Action Bronson is pretty popular here, let me add a fun fact. Here is the original sample of the title track rare chandeliers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ydww1P7jKg
Love how Alchemist is still on his east-europe phase, russian roulette was ingenius.

I'm trying to build an event for current us-rap and hope it'll work out.
GBE don't want it with Cash Money. Nobody want it with Cash Money. Now they're going to order up a Boi-1da x Drake diss track, and then we all lose.
I've watched like 8 Pusha interviews in the past month where he keeps talking about the faux beef he keeps perpetuating.Forgot to post this, but apparently Pusha has a Lil Wayne diss coming out. Gonna go find the source, not kidding lol.

Its so silly and tiresome yet intriguing because somehow it's still a thing.
Is there anything you can do w/ weed stems?
Did Bronson teach you this?
Irritating me too and I am a huge Pusha T fan. I was pretty disgusted when his "debut" album got moved out to 2013. F**king bullshit. Kanye's his boss, and Kanye is usually pretty good about striking while the iron is hot. My God is his best song in my opinion, then the collab with Tyler came out and got hot too - then What Dreams Are Made Of - another motherf**king amazing Pusha song. I feel like they are missing out on a huge opportunity here with him. Unless there are a bunch of singles planned, they need to be very concerned with him fading a little bit again, and I would personally hate to see that - because he is my favorite rapperI've watched like 8 Pusha interviews in the past month where he keeps talking about the faux beef he keeps perpetuating.
