GAF Plays: Baldur's Gate Duology

I started playing Baldur's Gate 1 for the first time about two weeks ago. It's really good. That seems like a dumb thing to say, but a lot of times the rose tinted glasses affect what other people say about games.

Anyway, does anybody have any recommendations for me to do, because I know I am missing things. Any side quests that should be done, characters that could be easily missed and whatnot. I've gotten to the dwarven mine I believe. I should also mention this is the enhanced edition.

I was leaning towards that. I have the original on GOG so it's not really a problem to play either one.

Not sure, but make sure you can import your character from the EE into BG2, if you are into that. If you can't then don't play the EE. I remember the best time raising my single class mage all the way from lowly level 1 to epicness throughout the series.

Do you like fiddling with mods? If answer is no then you'd prolly want to go with EE anyway.
Yeah before I had the EE I installed the widescreen mod but I don't think it worked correctly. Everything was just really focused into the top left corner of the screen if I remember correctly.

I'm in the middle of this. Does this thread mean I should pick up and continue? I just
flooded the cave, about to hit up actual Baldur's Gate for the first time.

I want to beat Kagaxx, I'm in chapter 2, my party is level 12 or lower. I tried to cast immunity spells to protect my mages from imprisonment and kill hime with staffs/ranged weapons of other characters, but he kills my mages in some other way. :/ I'm going to give up for now, will I be able to return to him in some later chapters or do I have to kill him in chapter 2?

Started a new game and now I have Khalid, Jaheira, Imoen, Edwin, and Minsc on my team. Only problem is that I want a cleric on my team as well, since they are good for healing. Unless Jaheira can do that job well enough, I'll need to kick someone out of the team. (most likely Minsc :( )

Minsc is so annoying. If you are a warrior class (fighter/paladin/whatever) just make sure you and Khalid are proper tanks and the game should be fairly straightforward. I had literally problems only with the final battle in the game.

Im a Kensai, so a pure damage dealer. That's why Khalid is so important to my team and I sorta need Jahiera and Minsc as they are my secondary tanks. With a cleric I guess that would make things a bit easier. If I replace Minsc with a good sub tank(as Minsc doesnt have very high Dexterity) would that remove the need for a cleric?

Kensai is not such a good choice for BG1 where you have like 10-20 hp for first few hours. It needs mage with blind to work well or cleric to buff defence. Later Kensai is walking god of destruction.

Damn i loved D&D2nd edition classes. 3rd edtition is so fucking bland in every game and even TOEE where it was working still didn't have this power behind its mechanics.

I have BGT installed, so I picked the class with BG2 play in mind. Im planning on dualing him into a mage either at lvl 9 or 13, pretty much when Im done BG1 and the expansion. Im already a walking god of destruction though, as long as I don't aggro. 10 hp doesn't do me any favors heh.

I also have the gloves of dexteriety, which automatically makes your DX stat 18. Right now Khalid has it equipped, but I guess I could give it to Jahiera to make her a legit sub tank, allowing me to get rid of Minsc?

So I've been tracking my progress of the series with Raptr and it's showing 103 hours and I'm in chapter 6 of Baldur's Gate 2 (I imported BG1 into BG2 so the hour count is for both games). I've been trying to be fairly thorough with the sidecontent, but I won't have much time to play games from the second week of May till pretty much the end of Summer. At this rate, how many hours will it take to beat the rest of the series? Doable in two weeks?

This thread should be far more popular than it currently is :P

I picked up that GamersGate bundle so I've got BG1 and BG2 ready to go now, so I guess I will start from BG1 unless I really hate it. I read EviLore's comments on how unforgiving and difficult it is at the low levels, which worries me a bit.

Finally finished the series, it took 127 hours to beat according to raptr.

I have mixed feelings about The Throne of Bhaal, locations are tiny, so there's no exploration, and it consists almost exclusively of boss battles with rather light and uninteresting story. I have to say early parts of Baldur's Gate 1 were my favorite moment of the series, this tolkienesque world wide open for you to explore, the extreme vulnerability your team has. Chapter 2 of BG2 was also great.
