Non-bullet hell shooters like R-type & Gradius, We still get the occasional game like Super Hydorah, but a vast majority are danmaku style. Games made by freaks for freaks.
I want something slower where you actually take in the scenery instead of laser focusing to navigate a screen full of sine-wave patterns.

We definitely need more Sega style arcade racers. I don't want to play racing games with accurate driving characteristics made for car enthusiasts.
A reminder how it's been 9 years since Nicalis and the developer behind 90s Arcade Racer had a falling out. I blame Nicalis, it's the safe bet.

Race based Burnout. I've fully completed Paradise excluding some of the DLC island but it just wasn't the same for some reason.

Stylized platform-action-adventurers. I enjoy platformers like Astro Bot or Crash too, but there's something about the feeling of having mission and a greater scheme to things that makes me really enjoy a platformer. With the peak platformer in my opinion being Sly Cooper 2. I'd faint from happiness if we could get a current- or next-gen sequel.

At least I have Wind Waker and BotW still to scratch that itch somewhat.

APM focus is a natural end-product of having multiple individually-selectable units and the nature of interactive combat. For example there's a starcraft 2 custom map/mode that tries to alleviate this called Direct Strike but it's really boring. Micro is in part what makes RTS really engaging. A lot of modern RTS try to alleviate this by automating many aspects of the macro economy but IMO it's something that's really just baked into the RTS genre and the only way you could really solve that would be by taking away the focus on individual units and abstract away combat - which again takes away a lot of the engagement factor of the games as you would end up with a sim game.

I don't know about that.

Just break the acronym down. Real Time and Strategy. Those two concepts have a pretty massive window to create within. The problem a lot of people run into is that they start with StarCraft, identify THAT as an RTS game, and have trouble theory crafting outside of anything that resembles StarCraft. Start with a blank page instead.

I miss games where you get to pilot a variety of strange fictional vehicles, each controlling very differently from the others.

Ok well how would you make an RTS? We already have games like Sins of a Solar Empire that are RTS but feature more towards empire management than unit micro and fit more into the 4X mold. And they are comparatively niche.

For some reason, I never got into the Star Control games, but l liked the puppets of Star Control 3.

We need more puppets in games.

It would be a fun problem to solve.

I might start the conversation here...

APM wasn't as much of a factor in the above picture. An order (Action) needs to take resources away from the player. Like Chess or a card game. The outcome of a game should result in one players 75 Actions being more effective than the other players 75 Actions. You'd really need to throw games like StarCraft out the window and start from scratch.

Funnily enough in chess APM(well really mouse speed and reflexes) and mouse accuracy is important in online chess as when time ticks down inaccurate or slow mouse moves can cost you the game.
Also...

But let's say you have a system where you have some sort of energy pool that replenishes over time and taking an action depletes the pool. I believe this could still devolve into an APM scramble as, for example, in a critical battle your management of units can result in a victorious army which can then steamroll the defenseless opponent. This could be preferable to expecting players to constantly be spamming 200+apm... But idk. It's a tough problem to solve.

Cartoon Orbit. I’m aware there’s a remastered gToons site but the entirety of the Cartoon Orbit MMO should be brought back and rebuilt.

Honestly I want games like Motorstorm,Syphon Filter to make a comeback.
And Mecha games too, AC6 was amazing but I wish it had deeper build craft and longer missions, the whole early leaks for it where you had a HQ, warring factions etc sounded like a better version of V which could have been fantastic. Idk I just want AC’s aesthetic/mechanics etc just more of it.
Speaking of Mecha, ZOE successor, ZOE2 was perfect, so fun, great characters, great villain, fantastic bosses, excellent story and really well written.
Another would be MGS, but a mech game. Gameplay like the MGS4 REX segment which was soooooo fucking perfect. Set before/during/after MGS4 where multiple countries have the MG blueprints and their own Metal Gears, fighting proxy wars. Would be so damn good.
But yeah, Mecha, more please.

AAA graphic with turnbased JRPG will be good for me. But it's only a dream, there will be no more seeing these days budget and project scope...

Third person 3D stealth/ninja.

Tenchu is obviously the king, but Shinobido existed as a spiritual successor/offshoot (original devs?). Sekiro has Tenchu DNA, but evolved in a different direction entirely.

Dishonored, although first person, also shares a small amount of DNA with its approach to traversal and stealth kills.

I would love to see Tenchu return, perhaps rebooted. Maybe with more variety in the capabilities of the characters. For example you could have one that perhaps didn't have a grappling hook and so needs to be played differently, but has an advantage elsewhere. There's also little bits of level design, like the bee hive in the first level of 3, that they could expand upon to give more options. Be inspired by what MGS3 did.

Simcades - we have 2 series right now and that's about it. What's worse is that Forza Motorsport is at its lowest point.

Stealth-oriented games should also make a big comeback. Hitman series is taking a break and that was the last big stealth series on the market. Gotta look at smaller titles to find something and that doesn't work all the time.

I really miss the 3rd person action genre, specifically from the PS360 era. Games like Stranglehold, Kane and Lynch, The Bourne Conspiracy, 007 Blood Stone, Sleeping Dogs, Splinter Cell Double Agent+Conviction+Blacklist, Max Payne 3, Wet, Army of Two. The only recent games this gen that are similar are the Sniper Elite series and Wanted: Dead.

Mega man legends
Vagrant story
Might and magic
Wizardry
Heroes of might and magic
Ultima
Vandel hearts
Dark messiah of might and magic
Suikoden
Freelancer
Gothic/morrowind style rpgs
Medeval total war 3
Half life 3
Ultima underworld sequel
Thief
Splinter cell (dark and light shadow gameplay of originals)
Dues Ex
Tokyo jungle
Burnout
Road Rash

What makes that a realtime strategy? Is the game continuing on in the background while you read the pop-ups and correspondence? This would be an interesting idea as a niche singleplayer concept for fans of grand strategy games but it would flop as a multiplayer game due to poor watchability. Maybe it's something someone like quill18 would find fun.

Hack and slash. We used to have a lot of God of War type games or clones which flooded the market but the trend died out during the 2000's. The massive appeal to me is that they were so fun and easy to pick up and play. No filler or BS, just pure immediate action with good movement and the addictiveness of chaining combos.

Would love if the next God of War games went back to the old formula. Even if just a spinoff by some another PS studio.

I want some NES-era Tecmo games to come back. Ninja Gaiden trilogy, Rygar, Mighty Bomb Jack, Tecmo Super/Bowl, etc. Imagine if they worked with Lizardcube and DotEmu. It could be pretty sick.

Why would I not want a genre to come back?

If I am not into it, I am not into it and I can just ignore it. Others might enjoy it lol. I don't need to gatekeep things based on my tastes.

Mister Mosquito. I want a current gen version where the Asian girls you try to bite look like they’re from Stellar Blade.

Proper arena/map control shooters, a la UT. Weapons with alternate fires and often were situational, sort of rock-paper-scissors encounters... I miss this.
Point and click adventure games? I guess these are kind of still around. I miss when they were a big genre though.

Wouldn't mind another Earthworm Jim game.
Where did Syphon Filter go?

Cool boarders/SSX/1080 style snowboarding games (along with other extreme sports like Sno-Cross and Rally Cross)
Wave Race style water racing games
Arcade racers like San Francisco Rush (a new Motor Storm game could be so sick)
Arena style 3D fighters like Power Stone and Ehrgeiz (Also like Bushido Blade)
Games with style and personality like Space Channel 5 and Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi.

The whole 1995-2000 32/64bit era, essentially.

Just any game without RPG elements of any kind. I just want more action Adventure games without the padding like the upcoming Indiana Jones.

I would also love more party games as well.

Edit: I would also like to add 3D fighting games. I want them to come back so bad.
