Every mainline entry I've played has been excellent. My ranking of mainline games:

3 >= 2 > 4 > 1

2 specifically left quite the impression on me, I remember loving that game a lot when I first played it.

Almost? Kratos is. He doesn't give a shit about anyone buy himself. His own goals are all that he cares about. In the original GoW series, you play the badguy. There are other badguys, like Aries, but Kratos is absolutely a villain.
