I didn't dislike Boyhood, I just don't think it was that special. It was a fine movie for the spectacle of watching something that had a span of 12 years, but the actual content of the movie was quite bare. And the things Mason was going through didn't really have any connection with me. Cool movie though.
I have not seen Fargo but did it deserve to win over true detective? Was it that good? If so I guess I may have to definitely start seeing it sometime.
Nothing "deserves" to win an award. But I personally thought Fargo and Billy Bob were more entertaining and refreshing than anything true detective had to offer.I have not seen Fargo but did it deserve to win over true detective? Except you just described a lot of films, including one of Linklater's first (see: Slacker).

I'm surprised you don't call me the worst poster on neogaf for disliking boyhood.
When I think of a "gimmicky" Oscar film I think of The Artist.
I wouldn't put Boyhood in that category at all.
I'm a bad poster, stop replying to me!There's a disparity between disliking something and making a brash/ignorant statement and not expecting to be called out on it.

So filming something over 12 years isn't a gimmick?
Right? By that logic Boyhood would be even more pretentious. So filming something over 12 years isn't a gimmick?

IF YOU DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT/UNUSUAL IT HAS TO BE A GIMMICKSo filming something over 12 years isn't a gimmick?

I don't see how it is even arguable that Boyhood utilizes a gimmick. That doesn't say anything about the quality, but it is definitely a gimmicky film.
I like The Artist :/When I think of a "gimmicky" Oscar film I think of The Artist.

For example, Michael Mann is a "gimmick"...unfortunately.
I mean, i can see why some people view boyhood as a gimmick. The lead boy, in his older age clearly isnt an actor. Some of his later scenes are fairly cringe worthy, especially the last one out in the desert. But it is an admirable effort and easy to feel good rewarding.
If Boyhood is a gimmick, all films are. Every film deals with the passage of time to some extent. The 12 year idea is the most accurate and believe able way to tell the story Linklater wanted to tell. Yes if you took that away it wouldn't be the same film. But you can take an essential component out of any film and it wouldn't be the same. It's such a silly thing to point out.
I'm a rock hard chested computer hacker who may or may not need shakey handheld cam CGI for me to jump over a banister.

That's not a gimmick, that's just lazy.

just rewatched collateral a couple days ago, mann is still a god. public enemies was terrible, but I have faith blackhat will be a return to form.
What does this even mean? For example, Michael Mann is a "gimmick"...unfortunately.

Birdman was a gimmick!
It had its gimmick in how it was cut, but it was also backed up by all around fantastic performances and an actual plot.
Fuck I don't even dislike Boyhood but it sure seems like it.
Non linear stories aren't a gimmick.Memento is a gimmicky film also. Still awesome.
Michael Mann da gawd. Blackhat in theaters January 16.
To hell with you plebs
I don't get how a director is a gimmick. What is his gimmick? How is he a gimmick? What don't you get? You've been incoherent most of the thread.

You're the one lacking clarity sir.
You said thisI love Linklater. I don't think he is a gimmicky director.
Again, what's your point?
I just asked what does this mean? I'm not even being complicated. I literally do not understand you.For example, Michael Mann is a "gimmick"...unfortunately.
