Grim Dawn

Anyone playing it? I got it on an Xbox sale and am really enjoying it. I should have gotten it years ago.

There is an expansion coming out soon which is remarkable for such an old game.

I'm into the third chapter of the game, level 30 shaman.

Pros:

- The exploration. The maps are big, hand-crafted and with lots of goodies to find. It reminds me of Baldur's Gate I and II where you slowly explore maps and find cool stuff.
- The slower, methodical pace. For me that is a plus.
- The rich lore and intriguing setting. There is a lot of text - I've been reading some of it. On my next playthrough I will read more of the lore.
- I like my current class but am already thinking about starting a new character in a new class. That is a good sign in an ARPG.
- I think the graphics are nice (but dated). Some areas are quite colourful - not just grim dark.
- A lot of depth in the character builds. The devotions/constellations are a cool way of customizing your character. It is a dual class system as in Titan Quest.
- Not too much hand-holding. You actually have to read the quests and think about where to go a bit. You are not just spending the game following an arrow on your mini-map.

Minuses:
- UI is still too small on my TV even after maxing out the UI size.
- Interface is designed for a mouse and keyboard. Combat and exploration are fine with a controller, but with going through menus to tweak your character a mouse would be a lot better.
- The bosses so far are not as memorable as Diablo (Fresh Meat!)

I'm playing a shaman. My pets and AOE melt through the lower level mobs. For tougher mobs, I am tanky enough that I can go toe to toe with them. I've died a few times but that was due to inattention.

I'm debating my second class. The obvious pick would be a soldier. But I am lots tanky already. I'm thinking of a build with more pets and more AOE.

Currently hooked playing the new Diablo 4 season, but I'll definitely give it a try after.
Edit:  this also has online co-op! Makes it even more worth it, hopefully the expansion will release on xbox as well.

Grim Dawn is a great game. I was one of the kickstarters or whatever it was way back when, high off of Titan Quest, I'm in the credits somewhere. :messenger_grinning_smiling:

Have yet to play the expansions or anything of that sort - but yes, if you were disappointed with Diablo IV or whatever else is in that vein, go give Grim Dawn a go (or Titan Quest..). The skill system setup is what I really love about these games (dual class, etc).

I could never get into it unfortunately and had the same issue with Titan quest. I love arpgs and on paper both games are right up my alley, but I've tried them multiple times and I always end up leaving bored and disappointed.

I loved Diablo II back in the day. But Diablo III for me was just ok, and Diablo 4 was a snooze.

I prefer single-player focused ARPG's. Diablo went in a multi-player direction after Diablo II.

Sounds like Titan Quest and Grim Dawn could be for you. Diablo and Diablo II are still my favorite games in that series - it's so sad but it really fell off a cliff after that.

Grim Dawn is definitely among top hack&slash games out there, it still looks good enough maxed/in 4k to not be disturbing, has hundreds of hours of content, very thoughtfull endgame, amazing crafting and itemisation, and it has new expack coming in 2025 on top of currently already launched base game and 2 existing expacks, for many slashers fans its at least 9/10 masterpiece, to not say 10/10 even :)
Strongly recommend it.
Edit: Forgot to mention it- tons of hidden content/secret areas/bosses etc, u will wanna use guides/yt/wiki to learn about this stuff :)

My friends and I played both Titan Quest and Grim Dawn (and Diablo III). Titan Quest... does not stand the test of time. We dropped it <30 hours in. Stiff to play and not offering near the build variety I'd expect from this kind of multiplayer, isometric action game.

On-topic, Grim Dawn's great. I ran a pure pet build (Necromancer/Shaman iirc). My army wasn't min-maxed, but it was a sight to behold charging the field.

After much deliberation, I choose Occultist as my second class. So I'm the Conjurer class. It will be fun to have more pets. My focus is lightning and the raven pet has lightening attacks. Soldier may make more sense for min/maxing - lean into the tankiness more. But I want to entertain myself in my first playthrough.

I've switched to Veteran to increase the difficulty.

I thought Grim Dawn was fun. The UI is a bit clunky, I also don’t like the visual style that much. I remember hating the text font lol.

Gotta be honest, after the disappointing Diablo 3 and 4, I’m fully hooked on Path of Exile 2. I like it better than Grim Dawn, but they cater to slightly different crowds.

Poe, poe2, d2r(especially moded), project diablo 2(its huge and very good mod to og d2:lod) and grim dawn are all amazing games, some can be 9 some 10/10 depending on personal taste, and its fine, great games can coexist together.

I don't know if Xbox allows mods for that game, but that is the best way to play that game, Dawn of Masteries and Grimarillion offer like 40-50 different classes, tons of new gear, mobs to fight et cetera, the fan made Seasons offer new areas and goals. I have ~900 ish hours and all but 50ish are modded. I am looking forward to the new expansion too. I was genuinely surprised how much I liked this game, actually a lot like Borderlands (series) in that respect, I started both series ~4 years after release and they are my most played non MMO games.
