GTA 6 On Xbox Series S: "I'm Not Really Worried," Take-Two Boss Says

Grand Theft Auto VI is in development for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but how will the game look and perform on the relatively less-powerful Series S? We don't know for sure, but Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick is not losing sleep over it.

During Take-Two's latest earnings call, Zelnick was asked about the Series S being, by design, a lower-spec console compared to Series X and PS5. GTA VI is expected to be a boundary-pushing game technically speaking, prompting concerns by some that it won't be a great experience on the console.

"Look, we support the platforms where the consumers are for as long as they're there, and we find a way to support platforms despite different levels of tech. Our labels are really good at that. I'm not really worried," Zelnick said.

The executive went on to say, "If one platform diminishes in value, there's always another one. So we're seeing great growth in PC right now, for example."

Zelnick added that PC will continue to be "more and more important" for Take-Two's business going forward, saying that supporting PC "isn't complicated for us." Many are wondering if GTA VI will come to PC, and Zelnick's commentary here sounds like it's possible, but of course it's not confirmed yet.

"The bottom line is we are selective about which platforms we support. We make the tech work when we can make it work as long as the audience is big enough to make that worthwhile," he said.

A former Rockstar developer claimed that if a PC edition of GTA VI is coming, it won't launch alongside the console editions. This would be in keeping with tradition, as GTA V's PC version didn't come out until April 2015, almost two years after the game first arrived on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013.

The PC version of Red Dead Redemption II came out about a year after the game debuted on PS4 and Xbox One. For the first Red Dead, the PC edition was only just released in late October 2024, some 14 years after the game launched for Xbox 360 and PS3.

The analyst's question about GTA VI running on Series S came against the backdrop of ongoing commentary regarding the performance differences between the Series X and Series S. Quite a few game developers from across the industry have commented on the Series S console's relative lack of power and how developers needing to support this system might be doing themselves a disservice. In the case of Baldur's Gate 3,issues with the Series S edition held back the game's overall release on Xbox.

Stalker 2 developer GSC Game World, meanwhile, said it originally believed bringing the game to Series S was "impossible" due to the technical limitations of the console.

The Series S had outsold the Series X in the US since the systems debuted in 2020, but that's no longer the case, as the Series X now accounts for 51% of all Series X and S consoles sold stateside. The Series S was more widely available than the Series X during 2020-2022 due to supply-chain issues amidst the pandemic, and this was one of the elements that played a role in the Series S jumping out to an early lead over its more expensive and more powerful sibling. By the end of the Series X|S generation, however, Microsoft believes the Series S will outperform the Series X due to its lower price.

GTA VI is set for release in Fall 2025, a window that Take-Two re-committed to as part of the company's latest earnings presentation.

I don't know why, but this is giving me flashbacks to cyberpunk and the road to its release. Especially the ceo's comments on performance regarding ps4 and Xbox one

And if you cant make the tech work on Series S? then what? because MS has a strict policy that says you must release on Series S to also release on Series X

And Cyberpunk ran much better on Series S compared to the last gen consoles so what's even your point?

Series S is using the same CPU/SSD setup as the other consoles. It's mainly going to be cut back on resolution like with most games.

People forget that GTA 5 is basically a Xbox 360/PS3 game.

Why should he be nervous? They dont care if it will run well on the series s. This will be the biggest and most successful piece of media ever created. They will make gazzilion dollars with it.

Different Ram and GPU though, I'm sure it will be fine but lets not act like all games on Series S run well compared to Series X they even had to change their parity clause for BG3.

The BG3 thing was due to a splitscreen mode was it not? Maybe in that mode on that particular game it was more taxing on memory or something but either way I don't see splitscreen modes as much of a deal breaker as it would have been 20 years ago.

Should be nervous about any version besides the Pro version. All second fiddle and grainy in comparison. Now we essentially have 3 series S consoles.

Maybe not, but sometimes compromises need to be made because like it or not the Series is is quite a bit less powerful than the Series X and PS5, even more telling when the game is more GPU bound

There is nothing to worry about when you already know you are going to skip Series S entirely and focus on optimizing PS5 and Series X.

Serious doubt the switch2 is anywhere near the Series S in performance and even when it will be 5 years old next year.

Honestly not expecting insane graphics from GTA6 at this stage I’m prepared to be underwhelmed

They don't care because they'll release it glitched/unoptimized and low inhibition plebs will still shell out 220 for the ultimate super duper edition.
