This might be a silly question, but I went for a jam with a mate and a group of folk I didn't really know, and one of them offered me £400 on the spot for my Whammy pedal. It's a WH-1 I picked up second hand in 1995 (the 3rd pedal I ever bought), so I know it's relatively vintage, but that seems pretty excessive. I didn't sell it and don't really need to, but it'd be £400 to put towards a really nice guitar which I'd get more use out of.
Other than some Dimebag and Radiohead stuff and the occasional harmony mode I've never really used it (the detune mode sounds a bit like a leslie and is a nice effect if you don't eff about with it too much), but it just sits on my board in a bypass loop.
I'd have thought that particular technology would have came on leaps and bounds since 95 or whenever they made. It's a nice sounding pedal and the tracking is spot on but it's still early 90's tech. Is the valuation about right?

That's not a dumb question. If I were you I'd replace them all. Your guitar will sound better. Now if you just stringed your guitar and you snap a string go ahead and just replace the one, but it sounds like you've been using these a while.

sell that shit asap, the whammy v has a classic setting that emulates the glitchiness of the older models in addition to a new 'chords' mode that tracks very well.

Could'nt say if the price is right but for a new v5 Whammy pedal they're around £150-£170 so it's more than twice the price. For some only the original pedals will do.
The tech has changed a bit. The Digitech Whammy DT adds drop tuning and true bypass but ultimately it does it's job admirably and doesn't need to change much. I usually use mine for the subtle de-tune effect (or sometimes not so subtle).
That's real nice. Wish my stuff was so neatly arranged. But then again I've got shitload of guitars, amps and pedals. I need a garage or something, lol.

You should play it. I have the limited LTD ride the lightning guitar and it's probably one of my most played guitars.

Speaking of strings, I took one off the LP to see if I could identify it. Other than being round wound, probably not. So I put it back on temporarily and it's having trouble keeping tune.
When you put on new strings, do you typically wind and tune, then cut the excess off, or wind, cut, then tune? The LP has locking tuners, but it still seems to me that I'll have a bit of excess sticking out for friction purposes.
Meanwhile on the Strat with Klusons the last time I changed strings I just left the whole thing wound. Looks awful.

schwupp, unless the strings are brand new, I would replace them all. But, if you don't need to clean the fingerboard or polish the frets, take the strings off and replace them one at a time.

Measure, wind, tune, trim, stretch. Don't have anything with locking tuners, but the bit of string in the hole isn't going to move a lot when stretching.

Nah, cut 'em all off to get them out of the way, unless you have some sort of bridge that makes that a Bad Idea™ (Les Paul tail piece falling off is usually a surprise for new owners).

I always save the trimming for last. Maybe you've accidentally swapped the A and D strings, and now there's not enough length to fit. There's no reason not to wait until they're all done.
When you cut them all at once, you're going from the neck under high tension to no tension. I think the strings come to final tuning better one at a time.

Can't trim last with vintage Fender/Kluson style and on other peg types I've already kinked the shorter string in the wrong spot to become a longer string. Check the strings are in the right spot at the bridge and nut before doing anything irreversible (D'Addarios have nicely coloured balls for this)— another reason to do all the strings at once.
It is just preference. The neck copes with the changing tension just fine (note that you don't cut them from full tension, you loosen them all to be completely slack and then cut them off).

Thanks all. Phoned the guy last night. Ended up with a trade, he's giving me a Strymon Big Sky and £80. I'll get so much more use out of the Big Sky than the Whammy, my boss RV-2 reverb is even older than the Whammy and is on it's last legs.
The guy I'm a Pink Floyd nut and he's been looking for an original whammy for a while (although I don't remember Dave Gilmour using one!) mine is in excellent condition and doesn't have many miles on the clock for it's age. I think he's going on the idea if it's on Dave Gilmours board it's going to be on his. Since he's got a custom shop signature and pulled up in a Porsche Cayenne, I don't feel like I overcharged him.

Not in the earlier records, but he's been using on later records like Division Bell ("Marooned" with the octave jumps) and it appears a lot on Endless River. Apparently he got it as a gift and fell in love with it. The guy must be a huge Gilmour fan!!

Eeeek. Needed a new power adapter for the Ocean Machine as it's 9v and 500mA! Never seen a pedal that needed 500mA. 250mA perhaps. It's obviously a bit power hungry but I guess that's what you get with a pedal with 2 in built delays and reverb and a looper. So I just got a Trutone 1-Spot Pro CS7 power brick. Also useful for the few pedals that can take 18v instead of 9v to get a boosted and more dynamic sound as the 9v outputs are switchable to 12v. But only on the right pedal. Never put more than 9v into a pedal that can't take it or they'll just burn out.
So I have to wait a few more days before I can play. And I've spent more money than I wanted to. Looks like egg, beans and chips for the next 3 weeks!

That's why I got a Whammy pedal too (that and Steve Hackett too - oh and Joe Satriani). Still not very close to nailing Marooned.

Amazon Prime Day Drama in the guitar world: There was massive glitch in the Music Instruments section just a few hours ago where a whole bunch of guitars like Fenders and Gibsons were going for under $200 from the retailer Music123. I'm glad I missed that. I doubt they'd take that much of a hit and have it go through. Also I'd be obsessing over it like I'm already obsessing over if my Amazon.co.uk SNES Mini order is going to be canceled.
Teles have really grown on me. When i first got into guitars I found them ugly and didn't see why people would buy one. I've grown to love their sound, and really appreciate their basic utilitarian aesthetic.

Yeah I've grown to like Teles too, but they've never been my favorite. I really like that Jim Root signature Tele though, that thing rocks!

i've not played guitar in years and want to get back into it. my guitars have been sitting in the cupboard since around maybe 2008. the amp i have is a marshall mg30dfx but it's not working properly now so need to buy something new.
are marshalls still a good choice? i'm just going to be playing in my room so doesn't need to be as loud as the mg30dfx. i usually never put it up past 2 in my room and only when i was playing with my band i would turn it up to hear it over the drums.
also my guitars are a Squier Stratocaster which apparently has a "Seymour Duncan Invader Humbucker" pick up (it's the Tom Delonge signature guitar lol). my other guitar is a Gibson Les Paul Junior. The kind of stuff I'll be playing is rock/metal/punk. Any recommendations on an amp then?
Also I'd love another Les Paul Junior but last I looked they stopped making them and the latest model I could find had those auto tune pegs (not sure the proper name) which I'm not a fan of. I'd rather tune it myself. What's happenin with Juniors these days? if anything at all.

Check out the Marshall Code series, I have the 30 and is a good value for the price, good for home practice.
I'm not talking about what sounds better. I'm saying at this point I don't know why they are even calling it a Les Paul. It doesn't have a maple cap. It doesn't have a set neck. It doesn't have humbuckers. It doesn't have individual tone and volume knobs.
The only similarities I see are the single cutaway shape and probably the scale length. If it looks vastly different and sounds vastly different than a LP why call it a LP? Then again they originally called the SG the "Gibson Les Paul SG" so I guess that's just how they roll.

It's $99. I'm sure it's not a big deal to anyone paying for such a cheap guitar. The "Les Paul" name goes a long way. Pretty sure these are going to fly off the shelves when they're released September.
Never stopped Fender from calling Jazzmasters with stoptails, tune-o-matics and humbuckers, and without rhythm circuits Jazzmasters.
To the general population, guitar names just refer to body shapes

Thinking in a looper for home practice, never used one out a crappy one integrated in a zoom multieffects years ago, what should be considering? Don't want to spend more than 150 euros/dollars.

Boss Loopstation is pretty good. Not sure what the latest model is, but you get a single stomp for about 130 euros.
Boss DD-20 has quite a good loop functionality along with an array of delays.
Home practice, a TC Ditto or Ditto X2 will do you right
Can vouch for the Ditto - awesome, simple pedal to mess around wtih.
Another option is the EHX 720 for $140. It has a lot of cool features for its price range (save multiple loops, fade out, separate start/stop button, stereo input/output, etc.). and is still really easy to use.
