Does the alternate have to be one of the specialists or is that another slot?
It is actually really hard to find a set of two gymnasts who happen to specialize in two different events.
More likely it will end up being 3 all arounders and 1 specialist in whatever the country is weak at.
True, but the specialists will only compete on the individual event that they qualify for. The team event will comprise of the four all-arounders.

I am only talking about team event.
Only 3 compete on each apparatus, which leaves a clear opening for 1 specialist in the team final... unless there is a new rule preventing that.

But that would mean that in qualifications they would only use 3 gymnasts in most of the events, so if someone had a disastrous routine they would have to count that score.
Q: The FIG has announced that it will be reducing team sizes at the Olympic Games from five gymnasts to four gymnasts. Does the FIG really want fewer gymnasts competing at the Games?
At present, only five gymnasts per country can compete at the Olympics. Beginning in 2020, up to six gymnasts per country can qualify to compete at the Olympic Games. Since six is greater than five, the new system actually creates opportunity for gymnasts from deep countries who might not be selected for a five-person Olympic team.
Yes, the team competition will be limited to four gymnasts per country, and the other gymnasts who qualify will perform in qualifications trying to reach the All-around and/or event finals. But again, more gymnasts from countries with the deepest teams -- gymnasts who are very deserving of participating in the Olympic Games -- will be able to compete under the new system, not less.
Q: So even if there are six gymnasts at the Olympic Games for the strongest countries, only four will compete in the team competition. That's not fair to the other two gymnasts from that country, is it?
A: Without a doubt, all gymnasts would like to represent their countries in a team competition at the Olympic Games. However, it is sometimes the case that an Olympic-caliber gymnast with the potential to make finals and win medals is not selected for his or her team, for one reason or another. That gymnast doesn't get to compete at the Olympics at all. Thats not fair either. Under the new system, those gymnasts will still have a path to qualify to compete at the Olympic Games, to have the wonderful Olympic experience and to proudly represent their countries.
Q: Doesn't reducing the Olympic team to four people force all four to be strong All-around gymnasts? Isn't that unfair to the specialists?
A: Historically in Artistic Gymnastics most gymnasts are All-arounders, and it's only in the past 10 years or so that we've seen the rise of the specialist, where some gymnasts stop training all events. Some have even complained about the decline of the All-around gymnast as specialists became more prominent. Because of the evolving format of team competitions, specializing suddenly made sense where it hadnt before.
Btw here's a Q&A on the FIG site explaining the 2020 qualification system:
http://www.fig-gymnastics.com/site/figNews/view?id=1151
some bits:
Gotta love their response to the question on fairness to specialists. It was essentially:
"Wut is a specialist? They shouldn't exist. Fuck them..."
Not really. The change is pro specialist. If you are a specialist on only one piece you may not make the Final Five if you can only contribute a small amount to the team.
This way countries will have two spaces reserved for specialists to win individual medals.
Wtf spoilers. They just finished the first rotation. The US women are gymnastics gold champions again! If Simone Biles wins the Women All Around she will be the most dominant gymnast of all time. Already the most decorated American gymnast. Probably will never top Nadia Comaneci's perfect 10's, but so much for black gymnasts not being good enough eh? First Gabby Douglas in 2012 and almost certainly Simone Biles in 2016. Posting this from the other thread as well.

I am low key hoping for Aly Raisman to pull off the all around upset.
Would be a great story after her disappointment in London.
Not going to complain one bit if Simone wins though. She slays.
I want the 41 year old to get a medal more than I want anything to happen this Olympics. More than I want anybody from the US to win. Apparently she's doing something called the Vault of Death. Which even Simone Biles says she's not crazy enough to attempt.
"When asked recently by The New Yorker if she would ever attempt the vault, Biles responded flatly, "I'm not trying to die."

There's also a good article today on daily mail about her. Ctrl-f Oksana there. I don't think it can be linked.
She's said she will be doing the produnova. (Vault of Death should be the official name) Those two she did in qualifying were just her taking it easy.

Ask Madeleine what she looks for when watching gymnastics, and she will likely say that the worst thing a competitor can do is not stick a landing, which is often as specific as NBC gets in identifying anything wrong with a routine. It might interest her to learn that a tiny hop is far less harmful to a gymnasts score than spinning through the air with her legs crossed (helicopter legs, in the vernacular) or spread wide apart (cowboying).
Ryohei Kato just made a mistakes at the end now. LolSurprising that none of the top men seem to be choking.

was the Ukrainian robbed? didn't look that bad to me.
Nah. The dismount is what nailed him + his lack of difficulty.

Is it possible to watch this stream still?
Seems like a mod resurrected the thread (thanks!). MSMSMSM and the rest of his posts are still gone though, no idea why his account was nuked.Wait so it's back now, what happened?
I found this article on the US tv/streamiing coverage pretty interesting: http://www.newyorker.com/news/sporting-scene/how-to-really-watch-olympic-gymnastics
is there another english speaking country I can watch for more in-depth coverage on the actual scoring, etc. w/ a vpn?
I'm definitely Madeleine in this paragraph
