Halo 5: Launch Gameplay Trailer

Has there been any consensus on why the trailer points to H5 being the beginning of the hunt? I just hope the ending doesn't remind me of H2's ending.

Lazy devs

Give me her digits. I'll make it right.
You are the man Stinkles. I've spent years trying to get this guy to jump in, even texting the number you are asking for. It says something that the Halo 5 you guys made finally did it. Cheers.

Sure, whatever.

You totally can't tell how bad the texture filtering is in these screenshots, yup. Whatever you say, buddy.

I'm sure the texture filtering will be better on your TV. lol

oh noes the texture filtering isn't up to your standards

This game is going to be great. Never thought I would be excited for Halo after Reach, 4, and MCC.

Reach was my favorite in the series, but I agree with 4 (never played MCC). I was adamant that I would stick to a single console this gen, but with this and gears around the corner, I can feel my resolve weakening.

I think it's just pointing to the greater theme overall. Halo 5 is supposed to "change the Halo universe", so I bet this is just the "beginning" of that.

Hope it's not just about chasing chief and then getting a cliffhanger. Doubt they would do that with how negative the backlash was against Halo 2's ending. The reason it ended that way in the first place was because of a lack of development time.

That was a really terrible trailer in my opinion. Halo used to have this cool alien atmosphere going for it, but this just looks dumb and over the top.

First Halo game I'm skipping.

Looks fun as hell, and a bit more light hearted with playful banter and likeable supporting characters. I didn't play Reach but as far as the rest I think this is a first for the main Halo games.

Having said that I've gotta say: gaaaawd is Master Chief a boring character or what!? Thankfully the game will stand on its own with or without MC but he's so boring, so one-note, so unidimensional goody two shoes Boy Scout it's not even funny. Hard to make me care for relate to him when they don't even show his face, much less actual personality. And no I haven't read the expanded universe crap. You're supposed to make me care with the games, not make me read 5 novels.

Also: yey Nathan Fillion!!! But wasn't he also one of the soldiers in Reach? Like I said I didn't play it but wasn't that a prequel where they all died?

Fillion's character Buck was in ODST. Which took place during parts of 2 and 3. He also made an appearance in Reach but you didnt play as him.

Yep, and he has gone through the Spartan IV program, which is like a more streamlined less child stealing/abuse version of what Master Chief went through.
From that trailer alone I already like him better than 14 years worth of Master Chief. At least Fillion's character has a face. Now I know Spartan IV soldiers do show their faces.

I can't overstate just how boring Master Chief is to me. They tried so hard to make him badass that he's just now predictable, lame and cookie cutter.

The only place he is a cookie cutter character is in the Bungie games, in the books he has a lot more personality and an actual identity.

Everyone likes Buck its true. Many people have stated they wished Buck was the new main character instead of Locke.

It is still however not nearly as apparent as the brick texture in the original picture.
Actually, filtering on sharp transparency like that tends to be one of the more obvious artifacts in any scene in any game that uses stuff like it. Too blurry and you lose the natural undersampling effect of the grating, too sharp and the scene is filled with high-power aliasing. But the issue comes partly from how occlusion is captured at the output, so beefing up the texture filtering alone won't make those surfaces perfect.

High-order supersampling would do the trick, but good luck with that.

I miss-read, yeah super-sampling is most likely not going to happen.

Well I don't care. If I have to read all the expanded universe crap just to get invested in the main character of the Halo franchise's meat & potatoes (at least 5 videogames) that's their fault and their shitty writing. I shouldn't have to hunt down all those books, drama CDs, board games and POGs to like the main protagonist.

It's a good thing they're fun to play but as far as the 4 main Halo games I've played they have mediocre characters and a terribly boring one-note, if visually memorable (I'll give him that), main character.

Whatever bro, thanks for adding to the conversation.

"Good luck with that" as in "it's not a viable solution." I wasn't making any sort of comment as to how much someone will or won't notice the issue.

I was busy with something else and miss-read, I already corrected my statement.

Can't even accidentally miss-read a comment and fix it within a minute in here without someone jumping my crap...

It's a good thing that 343 is actually working to flesh out his character then. I agree that you shouldn't have to read a bunch of books in order to get a better background on a character(although honestly Fall of Reach would be good enough on its own.).

Actually, if it were up to me, I'd have brought the entire ODST crew back as the second playable squad. Swap out Locke, Tanaka and Vale for Mickey, Dutch and Romeo. Aww yeah.

This is hot.

Also, just broke up with my girlfriend, and I've got two weeks off of work for Halo 5...and now I'm wondering...did I just subconsciously broke up with me GF for the game?

Yeah, I just.. can't get excited. I stopped at Reach and I feel 343 really haven't convinced me that I need to play Halo these days and get an Xbone.

It really is just all over the top - I remember Halo being a little mysterious, a sense of wonder and dread at the same time. I get games have to get bigger and 'badder' with each sequel but it doesn't sit right with me personally again much like Halo 4.

In his defense I think he is genuinely concerned. I mean if you were to play the whole game zoomed in 10x and only stare at one portion of your screen you *might* notice some texture effects are missing.

Personally I will play it unzoomed and enjoy that buttery smooth 60 fps.

Also I'd take those lacking texture effects over the 30fps with consistent drops of many other exclusive games this gen, all day every day. Game looks awesome.

Sometimes I forget how ridiculously heavy Spartans are.
Bungie's Spartans, maybe, but these guys are just wearing skintight bodysuits with a few metal bits glued to them here and there. Vale's armor would have to be paper thin if she's not secretly a magically animated skeleton.

OK I'm back to liking her less now.

Spartan IIs are the best and only true Spartans. You can ask anyone.

Well we'll see about that with Halo 5 because I did play Halo 4 and Master Chief was as one-note and boring as ever. They did attempted to flesh out Cortana but, in my opinion, was forced, badly written, and incredibly cringe worthy ("never lie to a girl"....."take a girl for a ride?" Ugh) with a dumb "love" story that left me more creeped out than interested.

She's an A.I. and he's a faceless brute with no personality of course I'm can't bring myself to care about their fucked up "romance".
