Hawken open beta

I played the Alpha, but never bothered with the closed Betas after that.

Fucking LOVED the Alpha. I'll be interested to see what they've changed in the last ~3 months.

Played a lot of Alpha 2 and some of one of the betas and had a lot of fun with it, but not really feeling a desire to dive back in. Guess I'll check out what's new though. From my earlier experiences I'd say best part: the movement, worst part: weapon selection.

This game is LEGIT. Been playing in the last beta for quite a while. The grind is very reasonable too; you can get a new bot every few games. Extremely fun.

I'm bummed that I don't have an Oculus Rift in hand to play this on, but I'll try it out in any case.

Is this like Chromehounds? I love that game.

Not really. Chromehounds had enormous maps and more customization. There was also a persistent online mode (capturing territory for your country/faction/whatever) there that this game won't have. I'd say that the pace was generally a lot slower in Chromehounds as well.

If I had to compare this game to something, I'd call it a cross between Virtual On and Mech Warrior.

It's a UE3 title. It runs super smooth on my system.

Super smooth on that system? Shocking, I am shocked.

Oh great, we have to pay to restock countermeasures. Or grind, I'm still not sure how the currency works. I didn't notice that in the betas. Free to play is kind of awful!

You can get the Steam overlay by adding the actual game executable into Steam instead of the launcher. HawkenGame-Win32-Shipping.exe

"You tested yourself against other pilots. Your battles helped make the HAWKEN experience great. Sometimes you won, sometimes you lost, but your efforts helped us improve our game, and now it all pays off...
HAWKEN's Open Beta is LIVE."

I was really into the concept when I first saw it but after playing it at E3 I was a bit lukewarm.

After thinking on it quite a bit I believe I have stumbled on what my problem is. The mechs are too much of an "in-between" for lack of a better term...

For me mech games and media fall into two categories:

Big Stompy Realistic Mechs(MW or Chromehounds)

vs.

Crazy Fast Super Robots(ZOE or ACE series)

Hawken to me really feels like a fairly normal FPS with a pretty mech UI and skin. I plan to try out the Open Beta now and hope it changes my opinion though.
