NR1 said:This weekend's Bust Buy ad reminded me of how much more the Blu-Ray players are compared to HD-DVD's. They had both Sony's $999.99 player and Samsung's $799.99 player listed, compared to Toshiba's $499.99 player.
I've already started my Blu-Ray collection (have 14 already), but no player to watch them. Does anyone know when the Blu-Ray camp plans to release more budgeted players? I was looking forward to CES with hopes of hearing one of the manufactures announcing plans to release a sub-$500 player, but that didn't happen...
As far as PS3 goes, it appears Sony has permanently stopped the selling of the 40GB model. I have been actively searching for one for the past month in Dallas; however, only the 60GB version is available. In fact, the Target store that I work for recently changed the label strip with both models listed to a new strip with only the 60GB listed. Several employees at other retailers have told me that they will no longer carry the 40GB.

mrklaw said:why would that make any difference? If you're accurately representing the original movie, you're still only getting 24fps. A 120fps TV will just repeat that frame 5 times in a row.

Because current displays don't repeat frames in a row at the same ... they alternate by repeating the first time twice, then the next three times.
mrklaw said:if you feed them 1080p/24, then you're feeding the entire 1920x1080 image at once, displayed progressively. So just hold it in the buffer for 1/24 second before showing the next one. You don't need a player to send the info out at 120Hz. Just a waste of bandwidth.
Onix said:Who said anything about a player outputting 120!?
No offense, but you don't seem to know what you're talking about regarding movies and framerates.
mrklaw said:easy tiger! No need to bite my bloody head off.
So you're talking about displays just refreshing internally at 120Hz. Fine. But I still don't understand why that is needed if they are progressive displays? Surely an LCD screen just shows the same image until its changed, so it should be able to display properly at 24Hz. I need an explanation as to why 120Hz is needed.
Also, you'll still need the display to properly recreate the original framerate. Most HD players output 1080p/60 which has the 3:2 pulldown in it. So that'll need to be reversed first before you can increase the framerate. Quite a lot of the sets don't do that particularly well. And if you have 120Hz update, isn't it tempting just to frame double the incoming 1080p/60 rather than go the extra mile to recreate the 1080p/24 and then frame-quintuple it?
Of course the displays should also accept 1080p/24, but they are even rarer than ones that accept 1080p/60 right now

Heck, I'd even put his supporting performance in Dick Tracy above his lead in Donnie Brasco, even though I really did still like the movie a lot.

mrklaw said:they've done a couple of BDs with uncompressed audio though. So hopefully they are getting up to speed with BD owners desires and the authoriing process. Uncompressed for V for Vendetta and Matrix please!

XMonkey said:Er.. they do? Or do you mean better support?
CurseoftheGods said:I hope Universal starts supporting Blu-ray soon.
Phoenix said:Yeah, that's a weird one. Not sure what Universal hopes to gain by going it alone with HD/DVD. Surely with TWX getting a significant share of the HD royalties, the fact that they are supporting HD exclusively without getting much on the back end is puzzling.
