HD DVD beats BluRay

The folks at Home Cinema Choice have made their call and given Tosh’s deck the thumbs up.

HD DVD has landed a major hit on Blu-Ray, with the Toshiba HD-XE1 winning the Best Hi-Def Player at the Home Cinema Choice awards. The deck saw off competition from two Blu-ray units, by Panasonic and Samsung, to take top honours.

The award is a major coup for Tosh in their ongoing, and growing, battle with Sony and Blu-Ray. The win comes just days after they slashed the price of their entry level player in order to take on the PS3’s hi-def ways.

Steve May, editor of Home Cinema Choice said, “The HD DVD format wins out because it is simply the genuine article. Blu-Ray hardware and software is trailing behind HD DVD, which offers genuine user benefits.”

Has anybody bought any J-pop BD's yet? I'm tempted to get the HYDE one that was just announced, but there have only been a handful of (Sony) lives released so far.

Few thoughts from this page...

A $150 HD-DVD player may help, it may not. If people have decided that one format is better than another, price drops don't always help. Video game wise, for example, major price drops didn't help the Dreamcast nor the GameCube.

As for that "HD-DVD beats Blu-Ray," wow that's a joke. HD-DVD is suddenly much stronger because it won some award? Please. Winning that award means jack crap.

Don't go around calling people idiot, idiot. There's 5 million 360 users in US vs 1mil PS3 users. Before the PS3 launch, all I kept hearing was that the 360 add-on would negate whatever effect the PS3 would have since the attach rate for the 360-addon would be higher. Plus, it's sunk cost if you already own a 360. When I bought my as-on, I didn't say: "Hmm, I'm spending $479+ $259can."

With the add-on price drop, if you bought your 360 last year and plan of buying the HD DVD drive, are you going to see it as a $400+ investment? Nope.

Content is king. People can be nice and happy with their cheap Chinese-brand HD-DVD players, but if they don't have their favorite movies to play on it, it will go nowhere.

While it's true that they're winning the standalone hardware battle it doesn't really matter at this point since the PS3 is tipping the scales so heavily in BD's favor. I don't think the HDDVD group in their wildest dreams thought that PS3 owners would be buying as movies as they have.

Well, unless I missed sth. total BD movie sales are just a bit over a million. So considering that PS3 sales are also arround a million that means a ratio of one Blu Ray movie per PS3. Not exactly a ton imo and that's of course ignoring the standalone Blu Ray player owners (although that's probably a pretty small group).

It'll pick up steam. I got my PS3 last week and thus far I've only picked up one Blu-Ray title... Casino Royale. But, I'm planning on picking up two more later next week (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and A Scanner Darkly). I think it's just a gradual thing. Now that I have a Blu-Ray player, I see no real reason whatsoever to purchase standard DVDs anymore unless it's a TV box (Venture Bros, Entourage) or a Criterion release... anything that's DVD or HD-DVD exclusive I'll probably just end up waiting on. I'm pretty much going to pick up at least 2-3 titles a month, maybe even more when the releases are more frequent and of more specific interest to me. I'm sure many PS3 owners are approaching this in a similar manner.

The tipping point for standalone players went into Blu-Ray's favor quite a few weeks ago. (That is, not including the PS3). So, as of this point, they're not "winning" anything.

I don't see how you can try to play down the significance the PS3 has had on BD vs. HDDVD. Correct me if i'm wrong but weren't HDDVD's weekly and total sales absolutely wiping the floor with BD before the PS3 was released? Currently how's BD doing in comparison to HDDVD? This huge influx of buyers had to have come from somewhere no? If that weren't the case BD couldn't have closed the gap and surpassed HDDVD so quickly.

Actually, you partly got me wrong :) My response was more or less directed on the sentence where you said that the HD-DVD group couldn't have imagined that PS3 users would buy that many movies. I just thought that's a pretty interesting statement considering the ratio of roughly ~1 movie per sold PS3 :D
I mean seriously, if the HD-DVD group didn't atleast expect that sth. along these lines would happen (-> early adopters [with probably a pretty huge amount of these having 720p+ screens] buy PS3 -> PS3 has built in Blu Ray -> people buy Blu Ray movies), they were on crack imo.

Let's be honest, do you think the HDDVD group was expecting to lose their LTD lead, much less be getting their a** handed to them on a weekly basis by BD because the PS3 finally launched :D? In a worst case scenario they probably figured BD would even it up across the board (LTD and weekly) due to the PS3 factor.

The week of the 17th will be big, if HDDVD can't take that particular week by a wide margin i have a hard time seeing them close the gap again for awhile.

If that $150 HD DVD player thing is true, that would be huge news, I think the biggest thing keeping people away from these players is the price.

Got my first Blu-ray movie today, Casino Royale; looks great. :D
It was a tad expensive though... $37 CDN after tax at Wal-mart. Can't wait until I get my next Blu-ray movie (probably 300).

There's also cheaper Blu-ray players in the works. You can always match price. But you can't match Fox, Sony, Disney, Lionsgate.

Best buy has it for $29.99. It pays to PM me on Blu-ray prices in Canada. I have them memorized. :lol

Doesn't matter how cheap it is if it doesn't have the movies you want...

The new pricing of these HD-DVD players will do really well in helping penetration. Now that HD-DVD players can be bought by people that can't afford HDTVs the hi-def format war will really heat up.

I think, that overall, this war needs more penetration - like Blu-Ray's exceptionally sharp sword into HD-DVD's gut. Now, with twisting.

Content is king for me. It's not like Blu-Ray prices will be held standard either.

At this point, it would take a massive swing to even convince the studios they need to rethink their positions.

Excellent point. People keep saying the $200 price will be the difference, when folks are going to have to pay $1000-$2000 to have a set that will make a difference.

The race to $200 is not what's going to win this particular battle.

I think most of you are over stating the importance of price.

Sure if its way overpriced like $4000 more per player then yeah but they prices aren't that crazy.

The issue here with cheap players is that the consumer base for HD content isn't cheap consumers. People thats driving HD content right now are the people with $1000+ TVs not people with 200 dollar TVs, the cheap customers would rather stay with their DVD players or for some finally purchase a DVD player. HD content is the last thing on their entertainment minds. The people that actually have TVs ready for HD-DVD or BD will always go for content before price. There's a reason they purchased a $1000+ TV.

The cheap customers won't be even considering HD content since they don't even have a device equip to display it.

But in the end, both will have cheap players, and getting there just a half-year ahead is not going to outweigh BluRay's content advantage.

I don't know if there are a lot of people that thought, "I'm gonna buy a PS3 to watch Blu-Ray movies" as much as there are people that thought, "Hey, I've got a PS3 now...I think I'll buy some Blu-Rays instead of DVDs."

If there were a large chunk of the former, you'd think the sales would be higher. :\

Before the PS3 was available, there also wasn't a BD player that people were particularly happy with either.
