The amount of drama surrounding this game, even here most of discussion is about the drama rather actual game itself.
Totally. I have zero interest in the whole franchise, but the fake-outrage is such a psychological shit-show I can't help but be fascinated by it all.
Its like the ultimate example of virtue-signalling. On a rational, ethical basis these boycotts are indefensible. HP is a huge pop-cultural brand so the game is going to sell huge regardless. JK Rowling has fuck you money already and isn't going to back down on her positions - especially as her views are in fact protected speech. Making a stand over this is inevitably going to produce a Streisand effect due to the way we all understand the internet works.
Basically, there are no upsides to this financially or in terms of deplatforming JK Rowling or damaging her income-wise.
So why do it?
It seems to me the most egregiously unacceptable outcome involves these people having having to admit that there's actually
nothing particularly wrong or objectionable about the game. Now this might not seem so bad as their ire is fixated on the author personally, it all emanates from Rowling's political views after all.
I suspect they'd argue that saying anything positive validates Rowling indirectly (which is a stretch to say the least!); but I'd argue in actuality its more about them saving face. They are embarrassed and simply doubling down.
