How Uncharted's PC launch speaks to Naughty Dog’s present and future

Says PS5 remains main platform.
TLOU Part I is coming to PC (eventually.)
Seems pretty obvious TLOU Online will be day 1 PC.
No mention of PS4 when discussing their future. So lets hope thats in the past.


The release of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection on PC is an important one for Naughty Dog, as it lets us celebrate our past and introduce a new, meaningful audience to the world of Nathan Drake and Chloe Frazer. But it also represents a pivotal moment for us, a chance to look ahead and expand the way we develop games, all while ensuring the level of quality our audience expects.

To achieve that, we partnered with Iron Galaxy Studios to bring two of the most emotional and thrilling Uncharted adventures to a new platform with PC-centric quality-of-life features. We’re so thrilled new players can experience these two incredible stories, all in one great package. So with its launch, let’s reflect a bit on why this release is so meaningful to Naughty Dog, and how we hope it will continue to showcase our commitment to delivering unforgettable games, now to more players than ever.

Bringing Uncharted to PC

While PlayStation 5 remains our primary platform, we saw the possibility of bringing our games to PC as a great chance to reach a new massive, worldwide audience. When considering what to debut on PC with, we looked through our catalog and decided the beautiful, globetrotting stories of the Uncharted series felt like a natural fit to introduce to players all around the world. Now, you may be wondering why we didn’t start with the original Uncharted. We felt that, while Nathan Drake’s first three adventures from the PlayStation 3 console still stand the test of time narratively, they would require a major overhaul visually to stand-up to modern PC releases and the expectations players may have.

The Uncharted franchise comprises standalone adventures that players new and old can jump into, and so while there’s still incredible stories and character development in those first three games, we felt players could easily dive into Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and pick up Nathan, Elena, and Sully’s stories. Especially with the introduction of new characters like Sam Drake, Rafe Adler, and Nadine Ross, A Thief’s End offers so much to players regardless of their history getting into and out of trouble as Nathan Drake. And Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which is also included in the collection, offers a new playable protagonist in Chloe Frazer. Fans who know the original trilogy will be delighted to see her return, but newcomers will have no trouble understanding her wonderful story by starting with the collection.

And so, these two games, both developed on more modern hardware, and also receiving a remaster for the PlayStation 5 console, felt like perfect candidates to introduce the franchise, and Naughty Dog, to modern PC players. We also wanted to ensure we were providing players with a worthy value, and so we bundled both experiences together, offering an overall suite of PC features and customization options to suit as many players as possible.

We also knew this PC release wasn’t going to be a one-off. As you may already know, The Last of Us Part I is in development for PC following its successful launch on PlayStation 5, and with this being, ahem, Uncharted territory for us, we knew we have a lot to learn about bringing our games to PC. But we were also determined to bring our careful consideration for every aspect of our games to this new version. So for the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, we deliberately partnered with Iron Galaxy because we saw in the studio not only a tremendous understanding of PC development we could learn from, but also a team that shared a love for our series as if it were their own. Iron Galaxy offered a partner we could trust would deliver a high-quality version of these two Uncharted games, and with whom we could work closely to better understand PC development while internally staying focused on current and future projects and bringing them to PC as well.

Lessons learned

The Uncharted series’ PC debut is both thrilling and reflective, a chance for us to take the lessons learned about offering our games on a new platform, and the expectations and opportunities that go along with it. In learning so much through our partners at Iron Galaxy, we’re able to look ahead to the future of Naughty Dog games on PC more excitedly than ever.

First and foremost, we learned, particularly through our partnership, what it takes to bring our own engine to parity to deliver on PC hardware. Uncharted 4 and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy are already beautiful games in their own right, and we wanted to maintain that quality in the PC release. But we still wanted to provide flexibility in fine-tuning an experience PC players expect, and so it was important for us to support more cinematic resolutions as well as specific PC graphical features. One of the biggest visual changes for Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection is Ultra-Wide Monitor Support*, which allows you to experience the Uncharted series’ breathtaking environments like Madagascar, the Western Ghats, and more like never before. But, with our cinematic cutscenes, we tested a host of graphical variations to see what worked best. Ultimately, we decided to actually add black bars to our cinematic scenes because, through all our iteration and testing, we determined that maintaining the original artistic intent and design of those bespoke scenes was paramount to the emotional experience.

The PC space is also one that offers users a ton of flexibility in hardware specs, controls, and more. As we’ve primarily only ever had to focus on considering one or two system specs in the past, this was simply eye-opening for us. Having primarily developed for console controllers, we had to learn about the preferences and flexibility keyboard and mouse controls offer, and we found that we had to re-evaluate certain game mechanics to fit the new input methods. For example, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy features a tense lock-picking minigame that utilizes a controller’s analog stick and haptic feedback to help players unlock them. But without those features inherently on keyboard and mouse, we had to rethink the application of that mechanic.

We also needed to account for the variability of PC hardware as it pertains to data loading, and so we reworked our engine to add a “safety valve” of sorts to ensure a smooth gameplay experience across various PC specs. This isn’t something we’ve had to worry about since the Jak and Daxter days, when we added an animation of Jak stumbling if data was loading in too slowly.

Learning all of this through our partnership with Iron Galaxy Studios only helps to bolster Naughty Dog’s understanding of PC development, and allow us to deliver the quality you expect in our future releases. We’re excited to be offering The Last of Us Part I on PC in the future, and know that, moving forward, adding PC development to the way we develop games, which in no way undermines the importance of PlayStation 5 as our primary platform, will continue to benefit our team in the long run. As Naughty Dog has come to better understand hybrid and work-from-home development over the last few years, PC development offers our team flexibility in how, when, and where our games are created. Much like players can enjoy Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection on PC from a variety of PC builds, our developers can work on PC iterations on various pieces of hardware from home or in the office.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection’s PC release is a transformative pivot point for Naughty Dog. We not only have another chance to celebrate our beloved franchise but also introduce it to so many new players. In doing so, we set the stage for Naughty Dog to deliver high-quality games on PlayStation 5, with the option of a PC release as well, with an understanding of how to cater to the different needs of both audiences now and in the future.

Their uncharted trilogy excuse though... is BS. The PC gaming audience is the least graphics oriented among gamers. Just look at the most played games.

7th gen games still look amazing on the platform and run on toasters. Some of the most requested PC ports are games from the 6th and 7th generation.

4k 60 FPS 16X AF uncharted trilogy on toasters instead of playing them in an unoptimized WIP emulator? That's easy money.


I hope Sony does not share ND vision regarding legacy games. Anything 6th gen and up is still worth porting without remaking. Just look at GT4 running on PCSX2.

It's probably a case of "Why porting legacy games when we can remaster them one more time and sell them full price on both PC and PS5".
Seems like The Last of Us Part 1 did well so I wouldn't be surprise if they re-re-release the trilogy again. I mean, they're remastering/remaking Horizon Zero Dawn for Christ's Sake!

The trilogy excuse sounds like bullshit. Given the issues surrounding the UC4 port, it doesn’t seem like a massive amount of care or effort was put into the project. So I call bullshit on not wanting to do a slapdash job for the trilogy.

Game is not selling well on steam. I just don't see it as a system seller. Bring on the last of us and demons souls.
Its not doing well so far but it had almost zero promotion for some weird reason. I mean we didnt even get a launch date confirmation until like 2 weeks ago or somehting.

It was also stupid to not release U 1-3 first as PC players will be starting the series at no.4, the ones that didnt have a Playstation.

Sony def aren’t going out of their way to make these pc ports big events anymore. They’ve announced like 5 of them to release in a two month span with almost no real marketing. I dont even think they posted the sackboy port on their main account.

It's not like they're launching fireworks and the whole orchestra on console too these days. Where's my showcase at?
They also keep saying that consoles are their primary focus, PC is extra money with late ports. It's fine by me.

Say goodbye to Naughty Dog games being the visual benchmarks of the industry. They won't touch new generations, scalable engines like UE5, and sure as hell won't develop a new Engine specifically built for PS5 architecture.
Cerny wasting all that time with the IO and money with the fancy SSD over a bigger GPU and more tflops only to have devs target PC specs is looking like a pretty dumb move.

By the time a new Naughty Dog game releases, the standrad PC gpu will be like a 3060 or better. I wouldnt worry about it. Thats the beauty of PC, lowering resolution, framerate, and settings if need be.

Games like wipeout HD (or XL?) played on a PS5 or even Sonic All Star Transformed maxed out at 60fps will fool pretty much anyone with their art style.

They feel like they look about as good as they could look.

They’ve done a lot of marketing for god of war, horizon, and gt7 though…they have had CGI commercials, big billboards, they had clawstriders statues in big cities, that car skyscraper for gt7, promotional bundles and collectors editions, etc.

The roll outs for the pc ports and TLOUP1 were basically just like trailer blog announcements and release

The CC users on Steam is almost 8000, that's kind of low 😳 (Days Gone was 27 500)

It's still better than Requiem that came out yesterday and the CC was less than 5000 on launch day. This is flop territory, even Scorn got more. I'm very shocked at Plague Tale being so low.

Glad to see Uncharted 4 on PC, frankly that was ludicrous thought just a few years ago. But since I already played it I am more interested in TLOU 1 and 2 for sure. I own Pro version but can't enjoy it anymore at that framerate.

I'm not against walking simulators, just that ND's gameplay mechanics have never done anything to entice me in. The Uncharted plots are decently entertaining enough. I should add that I tend to favor indies and almost always ignore the plot in games.

I'd also like to say I'm not your typical PC gamer, but who am I kidding? My 1,000+ game Steam Library says it all.

Its also probably the oldest game sony will port at this point. It’s 6 years old and has been free on playstation for years already, never saw it blowing up the charts

Too many games coming out at the same time. Gotham Knights will also underwhelm.
At least with Plague Tale I hope the devs got well paid for the gamepass day one, since that is probably where most people are playing it (me included).

I couldn't disagree more, as Naughty Dog mechanics and fluidity of controls actually ruined close to the totality of third person game released after The Last of Us or Uncharted 4 for me.
I swear that's no hyperbole, and afterall Uncharted 4 Multiplayer is still populated after almost 7 years, and Factions (TLoU Multiplayer) after a whopping 9. In the same market where some acclaimed multiplayer-only games are dead in a couple of months. Should mean something.

I certainly agree when it comes to the linear game structure of their titles, not my favorite for certain, and perhaps lack of true innovation.
But when it comes to controls and mechanics, what they do is S tier.

I think he's just following Jimbo and Herman's lead and simply trying to sell his game like a used car salesman. Doubt he actually means it. Doubt he will settle for PS4 quality graphics in his next cinematic game. Especially after shooting a tv show. He will try to match those photorealistic visuals for sure.

The problem with integrating so heavily into PC, at least if im reading their comments correctly, is the potential to miss out on fully maxing out the incredible IO and super fast SSD Cerny created for them.

All communication they're doing is centered on PC, heck even in the latest God of War video there's a big God of War 2018 logo with "available on pc"

Yeah they are full of it. They only did the new games as 95% of the work was done on the ps5 port already.
The uncharted collection was done for ps4, and is sold for cheap, they would have to invest more to bring that one over.

You are right about older gen games. PC is known for playing older games. As there is no barrier really to gens , and when there is community coders make it work. Looking at vgvoodo 3dfx glide wrappers for OGL/DX, DosBox, or countless patches and workarounds to get past drm.

Also with the steam deck out, so many ps360 era games work flawelessly on it. Its great as many of those games aren't available on console anymore. Havivng uncharted collection portable would rock.

why do you have an issue with porting older games to pc? Is it hurting you? no then why the angst? Or am I reading your comment wrong?

As a multi system owner (everything except xbox) this is a great move. People can play on the TV on ps4/5 , and now on the computer or on the go via steamdeck/laptop. And with Sony not making a portable, this is the only way to get these games on the go.

PC is powerhouse system and only place where things can still be played decades later and has multiple types of systems. Sony is smart doing this. Especially now with steamdeck out there.

That’s not what that statement means. It’s about I/O data management for the multiple interactions of pc hardware. PS5 will always be the focus for ND.

I love how TLOU does cover, it's all an animation. You never push a button to stick to cover, you walk up to a wall close enough and the character does the cover animation but you're free to move. I don't get why most other TPS games don't do it like this.

Way too many games coming out at the same time and it’s probably very overwhelming for the average consumer.

Well like someone else pointed out it's only blog posts and trailers, nothing to be overly dramatic about. They are also releasing 3 games within one month so that's probably why you're feeling this way. The other issues you're talking about have nothing to do with their PC releases.

You've had Horizon, GT7 and TLOU Part 1 this year and God of War just around the corner. Spiderman 2 and Wolverine have been announced and you can bet they have a bunch of new games to announce in the coming months.

You own a PlayStation for the Plug and Play experience, the affordability, the physical games you seems to care about and to play exclusives before anyone else. Seems like a great package to me, if you're not enjoying it, it's probably on you, not because of PC.

I think Naughty Dog was in a bit of a catch-22 here.

People saying just port the remastered trilogy to PC are really short-sighted. The games don't hold up very well, especially the first game.

I think they've made the right choice. Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy will still be there when they eventually bring over the trilogy remade, but they really need to be focused on their other more important projects.

This might even be something for a different studio, but even Bluepoint is obviously busy.

I think they should have put more effort to bring the gameplay of LOU1 in line with LOU2, so if they similarly remake UC1-3, they really need to bring gameplay enhancements this time around.

It makes no sense to release 4 and the DLC game first. When I first opened the store page, my brain actually read Nathan Drake Collection, because that's what I was expecting. Had to do a double take to realize this was 4.
 
I wasn't following the Uncharted release on PC very closely and had assumed it was the entire series, but it's just Uncharted 4 and it's DLC I think?

They should have ported the entire series. I guess that's why emulators exist, but it seems like money left on the table to not release the entire run. Who wants to start a numbered series with 4?

I think he's just following Jimbo and Herman's lead and simply trying to sell his game like a used car salesman. Doubt he actually means it. Doubt he will settle for PS4 quality graphics in his next cinematic game. Especially after shooting a tv show. He will try to match those photorealistic visuals for sure.

The problem with integrating so heavily into PC, at least if im reading their comments correctly, is the potential to miss out on fully maxing out the incredible IO and super fast SSD Cerny created for them.
I mean, I wouldn't worry about it. Whatever differences there are between all the systems they put their games on — ND usually puts in the work. They put in the work for things that you don't really expect them to since no one else does but they do it so I dunno, I wouldn't worry until the time where they do drop the ball.

They put in the work for things that you don't really expect them to since no one else does but they do it so I dunno, I wouldn't worry until the time where they do drop the ball.
IMO, they dropped the ball with TLOU remake so this has already happened.

Exactly. It's PS5 exclusive, should take full advantage of the machine by sporting the geometry density of UE5, have no noticeable LOD and overall look like a generational leap over TLOUII.

Instead looks like Part II with higher resolution textures, new generation shadows tech, improved water, better DOF, and 60fps.
Why? Not cross-gen, but announced along with a PC version.

But look at silent hill. Is on PC and looks next Gen compared to tlou.

I think nd dropped the ball with tlou but not because of PC gaming. I think they just got lazy and didn’t put in the work that was required to make it next Gen. They simply reused stuff they had created for tlou2 and called it a day instead of making new assets and other upgrades for the ps5.

My big problem with ND is that they defended it after being called out. The devs played the victim on Twitter and then patted themselves on the backs for a job poorly done. They acted so proud of that remake and I’m like really? Is this the same company that pushed boundaries with every game starting from uncharted DF? There is probably a lot of turn over there so probably not the same guys who really prided themselves at being the best of the best.

Eh.. wasn't really that impressed with that either. And it's UE5, of course it looks good. That's the whole point.

No, I don't buy it. As we can see there's no headroom on the engine as it's already basically maxed out as is. They used PS5 extra power to fix their weaknesses, like shadows, provide 60fps modes, and feature higher general setting. That's it.

To achieve more, would be worth it to massively upgrade their engine to take advantage of the PS5 architecture knowing their old engine just took lot of efforts to be ported on PC (with mediocre results even on a last gen game)?

Seeing Druckmann all excited for Part I visuals is what started this worried attitude.
It looks good, great, amazing even. But it's NOT what a next-generation Naughty Dog game should look like.
