I hope Sony Santa Monica brings back the epic scale of the original saga

You will get forced 2h walking sessions with a black girl european god instead, sorry.

After Ragnarok, I am personally done with this studio.

More than the large scale (though it would be cool to see it return) I'd like the next Santa Monica game to put the focus back on the gameplay instead of chasing the annoying Naughty Dog formula.
Gow 2016 and specially Ragnarok are held back by focusing too much on the story and constantly killing the pacing with slow walking and talking or hour long story focused sequences.

Ragnarok was at its best in the few locations where it actually lets you play uninterrupted for some time (like the optional "The Crater" location). For their next game, give me something that's more like The Crater, also pull the camera back a bit, bring back some of the epic scale and cut down the story stuff by like 60%.

The way they used the camera to convey a sense of scale and epicness was brilliant. It also put into perspective just how massively powerful Kratos was going against those divine beings. In contrast, the recent series feels like a bunch of tavern brawls.

I didn't get that feeling at all of Kratos being powerful. I more got the feeling of the giant bosses being mentally retarded.

Cronos in particular. If an adult tried to kill an ant the way he tried to kill Kratos...you would think that adult was retarded as well.

i dont find the bigger the boss the more fun im having, the fun parts are the cutscenes in between when im just watching it happen lol

They need to be grand and well designed and thats something i find the old GoW struggled with

I mean, he did try to crush him lol.

Kratos needs something to get him to unleash and not hold back.

And for the love of God, don't take me away from Kratos and have me play 2 additional characters I need to build out a skill tree for. Insomniac is guilty of that shit too, and it waters down the experience imo. I just want a vertical slice of what Kratos does best.

Pretty much.

Besides, both the new and old saga have their own strengths and weaknesses. They both did some excellent things. We're fortunate to have both games we can play. No point in not enjoying the variety on offer.
Yup. If Sony keeps the gameplay the same as the OG GoW games, people would tell them to do something else or whatever.

I think both forms are awesome but kinda feel like people are being a little to nostalgic for the original games. Again, I LOVED them especially GoW3. But I feel like if they tried that gameplay today it would be very barebones for an AAA game.

I wonder how good Asuras Wrath is on RPCS3

4K, 60fps, very short load times, all the DLC works no problem.

Played it some time ago on the emulator and had a fantastic experience. 0 issues, tons of enjoyment.

God of War 3 was my next gen moment. Some dude brought his PS3 to the dorm and everyone there was in awe at the Poseidon boss fight.

Long time since GoW was the worst Ninja Gaiden/Devil May Cry/Bayonetta clone, everybody wanted a change and new setting in Nordic Myths and hated GoW3 as the worst one of the trilogy
Maybe in 10 Years, after next iteration of the IP (set in JAPAN, every game is better if set in Japan) same users will complain about it and remember how awesome was Ragnarok
Gamers. Always complaining. They're never happy.

They won't. The new ones were more critically praised and more importantly FAR more successful sales wise.

I doubt the present Santa Monica has the talent to make a game 100% epic and fun like the original trilogy. Not to mention the great pacing, a constant crescendo with no fillers and NPCs who won't stop rambling.

Losing Alanah Pearce was a blow to the studio.

Who else is going to bring epic, large, awe-inspiring things to the table.

Pics of said epic, large, awe-inspiring things:

There were very fond memories playing the GOW3 back in the PS3 and seeing the titans up close was truly a technical marvel with all the poor ports and quality of games leading up to it, highlighting the "power" of the Cell.

The thing that sticks out to me was the Cronos fight and if you played part 1, you will see that Kratos took a few days to climb to the top, here he's jumping from the arm to the head in less than a minute basically broke the sense of "scale" it was going for. I get that it was mean to be epic and for gameplay reasons but still, it does stick out.

I would have loved to see him take on the Hindu gods. But those have active worshippers and it would have been a public relations shit show, so they went with Aesir & Vanir instead.
The cowards. If Kratos takes on another pantheon it'll probably be the Egyptian Eneead.
The problem is that many old religions are either completely forgotten or, even if historians know about them, popular culture has no clue.

The Aztecs and Zoroastrians are examples. However, I'm not sure how much source material there is and how much of it is in English.

All of this is useless if they hire some BS sensitivity reader and other DEI type consultants.

God of war was good, ragnarok was meh, both lacked scale yes.

I would love for them to do hindu gods, as they are cool as fuck, but I expect that'd be poor taste. Mayan/aztec would be great too tho and much less problematic

I'm honestly waiting for some Indian devs to tackle a GoW inspired like game around Hinduism and its deities. Its source material full of potential epic and surreal set pieces/bosses. How it hasn't happened yet is beyond me.

The older God of War games just hit different. No disrespect to the new GoW games (despite feeling Ragnarök was very meh), but the originals are superior in presentation and epic, there is no comparison.

The series has gone from a vibrant blood-pumping arcade experience, to a downbeat story driven one.

The new games trundle along in the slow lane, and occasionally accelerate to pass a truck (whilst muttering "look I've still got it").

Bring back the epic scale and Kratos' epic rage.

Enough of this last of us wrapped in a coat of Norse myth.
you made me remember that rage was a bigger mechanic in the og trailer of GoW 2018
it can be seen in the first trailer here

a shame, cause it looked interesting, also love the ui here.

There's generally a taboo over making such games that utilise current day widely practiced religious characters in that way.

Film/cartoons it seems somewhat less taboo, so I'm not sure why it's specifically an issue for gaming…tho to be fair it's generally satirical comedy cartoons that get away with it

I feel that given Santa Monica is clearly not as edgy as Naughty Dog, they will eventually lean more into what players want (i mean some players, obviously Ragnarok sold well but i feel the complaints are not something to take lightly), while still retaining the new GoW global style. They'll try something in between.

Or perhaps the Lost Planet 3 writers are too far gone and want to be the new Neil Druckmann or something.

As for the epicness, obviously it's a deeper problem regarding the proposition, can they really scale down the content, the open environments etc. to make something more focused where they can put a fuckton of money into 4 or 5 key setpieces ? It would have huge consequences on the game's structure, seems risky commercially.

LOL they'll never win. Soon if they made every GoW game like that people will complain it all looks the same, or when is this scale gonna get bigger and bigger, until you're fighting planet sized beings, then galaxy sized beings, then universal sizes LMAO.
Yeah true. Asura's Wrath was amazing.

I liked all the God of War games but I'm not really sure we NEED another one at this point. The only thing I will say for sure though, if another one is made, please for the love of all that is holy, just let me play as Kratos the entire fucking game.
