I started watching The Last Kingdom

DragoonKain

Neighbours from Hell
I watched a few episodes a couple years ago and wasn’t really into it, but I’ve been in a sword and shields kick lately, so I went back to it. It’s not the best, it has some really cheesy lines of dialogue, which I still can’t tell are purposefully cheesy or not... but it’s getting more entertaining as I go. Basically a bigger budget Vikings with characters who have more charm.

And I don’t know what it is, but I love these European actresses shows like this always seem to find.... they’re always gorgeous. More in a cute petite way than an exotic or sexy way.

I’m halfway through season 2. I’d give it a 6.5/7 out of 10 so far. Far from elite tier, but fills the void enough for the time being.

Anyone here seen it?

Started it a couple years ago but didn't get far because I only really watch comedies. Might go back to it

I binge watched the series with my girl - it's got issues but at the end of the day we both really enjoyed it. I really dig the characters, setting and the pacing of the show in my opinion is amazing. I didn't feel there was a single "filler" episode which is crazy.....it's incredibly watchable if you are even slightly interested in the genre. The amount of shit that goes down in each episode is refreshing and yet it still maintains a narrative that is simple and easy to follow.

Also, the main character is fucking consistent.....I hate shows where you get invested in characters and start to understand their motivations/flaws, when suddenly the writers decide to have that one "episode" or story arch where you are like "wtf are you doing? why are you acting like this all of a sudden?". There was a particular arch in this show where my girl was getting mad at the main character for acting a fool, and I'm like "just have faith in him" - sure enough, it paid off. Any changes that happen with the characters feel earned or at least they attempt to build it up over time. It's not perfect and we aren't talking about particularly deep characters here, but the show seems to really respect each character for what they are. This is sorely lacking in a lot of media today, so maybe I'm just starving for even slightly decent characters....I'd say The Last Kingdom has extremely decent characters.

Part of the reason I think I liked it so much was because I had zero interest in watching it. It comes off as the most generic looking show, and I guess it kinda is....but it also has a lot of heart and I love being pleasantly surprised.

I enjoyed it a lot. The pacing is breakneck, it feels like they are always rushing towards the end.

It's based on a book series, and so far they are halfway through. I think they have enough material for 2 more seasons

It's a good show; however as it goes on the plot gets more and more contrived. The plot armor gets heavier and heavier. The most recent season has a scene where the main character and his band are surrounded by armed men, and being aimed at with weapons which wouldn't have been invented yet, in the middle of an enemy fortress...and they all escape except for 1 character who was obviously set up that he was going to die from the beginning of the season.

I love history, though, so any show about early England is going to be right up my alley, warts and all.

Yeah I love the show. It has its flaws, the first season is ropey production wise and the main actor is not the greatest. It definitely improves in scale and quality as it progresses. I like that it isn't afraid of having the heroes have multiple flaws and be genuine assholes and murderers sometimes. It definitely starts to remind me of the 'Sharpe' series as it progresses. The plot armor does get a little insane including a 60's Batmanesque scene in the most recent season. But the battles are brutal and believable outside of the heroes and villains.

One of my favorite shows ever. The Uhtred/Alfred dynamic is really the engine that drives the best of the show. Sadly we lost that for season 4. But there are plenty of interesting characters and situations. Such an amazing show!

I love it. I watched the first season when it debuted back in like 2015 or 2016 and had forgotten about it until the AC: Valhalla reveal that got people talking about. Was pleased to learn that there were three more seasons available and binged them all a couple of weeks ago. Great series with incredible actors that are relatively unknown. It helps that I absolutely love the time period and setting, of course.

Netflix took over the show starting with Season 3 apparently, and it definitely shows. The actors were the same, but I feel like the show went in a bit of a different direction than the first two seasons, and while the production values were way up, I think I preferred the first two seasons. Seasons 3 and 4 were still great and I look forward to seeing the show continue for a few more.

I also just started reading the books. Only around 25% through the first book, but the writing is really enjoyable.

I loved the first 3 seasons. Season 4 fell off a bit for me, but was still great. I hope they keep it going if they are inspired to keep working on it.

I'm also considering starting the books.

I've been watching this recently and loving it. Just finished season 4 today.

Who do you find so attractive OP? I thought 90% of the women in this were deliberately hideous.

lol pretty much all them except Alfred's wife.

I think Brida is cute
Mildrith
Hild(with longer hair)
Iseult

and now Gisela is the latest, she might be the prettiest I've seen so far.

I'm only halfway through season 2.

One of my favorite shows on Netflix. First 3 seasons were great but I thought the recently released 4th season was just Ok.

I think the loss of King Alfred (David Dawson) in S3 had a pretty big impact on this season and why it wasn't nearly as good as the previous 3

I liked it, though it suffers from the same thing as most modern shows, not knowing when to tie up loose ends...dragging everything on forever. I think I saw the first three seasons.

Hey now; that actress is gorgeous...you can tell even with them trying their best to make someone in their 20's look like a mom with adult kids! :messenger_grinning_squinting:

Aethelflaed and Eadith.

The Last Kingdom is one of my favourite shows. If you enjoy Last Kingdom, watch The Vikings too. It's a prequel of sorts. And there's a very very attractive woman. Katheryn Winnick.

I was absolutely blown away a couple months ago when I found out she's only 26 (presently - not when the show started). I was sure she was in her mid 30's at the very least.

I was also surprised to see that when she's not Aelswith, she can be pretty hot!

being aimed at with weapons which wouldn't have been invented yet, .

I think this common misconception took over popular culture when Assassin's Creed 1 removed the crossbow and claimed it's for accuracy. Crossbows are more than 2500 years old and were used by the ancient Greeks and Romans. They were not widespread in UHTRED SON OF UHTRED's century, hence the guy saying he got it in his travels, but people were familiar with them and their ballista cousins.

True, a crossbow could maybe theoretically be in Angle-land in pre-Norman times. But it's something added in for drama and rule of cool to the show, and probably to ape off of Euron Greyjoy from Game of Thrones (Lost family member comes back from the orient, has a multi-racial crew and strange vaguely "Eastern" weapons, is power-hungry). It definitely shouldn't be in the show. The European crossbow certainly wasn't a common thing to see during the time period of the show.

I'm halfway through season 4 and I don't know why they needed to kill father Beocca unless the actor wasn't going to be able to be on the show anymore, so they wrote that in? It seems kinda pointless so far and hasn't really done anything to drive the plot forward.

Yeah, that one really bothered me and didn't seem necessary at all for the story arc, but maybe I'm biased since I liked the character so much.

I think we will discover a part of it in the following Seasons, basically restricting Uthred to return to Bebbaburg because he dos not want to loose more men for his cause

I loved Season 4, i think i liked it more than 3. In either case this Series didn't fall off a cliff like another viking series.

Definitely. Especially as a character who's just a less interesting version of him just takes his place. A really pointless death.

I actually liked S4 the least of all of them, I think they've just killed off too many of the interesting characters by this point.

The battles really devolve as the series has continued, also. In the beginning there was at least a nod to strategy; the viewer got to see why a shieldwall would be effective for the time period. By now we've full transitioned (there was always some in the show) to a bunch of guys randomly running at each other while the important characters effortlessly 360 noscope all of the filler soldiers.

Yeah, I love the show, but they totally just stopped caring about making the character plot armor believable in anyway. Straight up Last Kingdom Musou in a lot of scenes.

I’m fully caught up. Season 4 was so vastly inferior to the other 3. Edward was fucking terrible, just an awful character. Once Alfred dies you can tell it really missed him, he and Uhtred were great together. It was a love/hate relationship.

But season 4 just seemed so formulaic. Like I knew how it was gonna end before it began. It became very convenient and contrived, characters went out of character, things developed and resolved far too quickly all of a sudden.

It has that feel that shows start to feel like when the creators stop caring. I hope season 5 rebounds. Cut out the bullshit, Uhtred’s kids were fucking pointless especially his son. Kid was a total dork who is a hardcore Christian and didn’t know a weapon if it stabbed him in the face and suddenly he’s in large scale battles fighting off Danes? Uhhh.. no. That was dumb.

Brida felt very contrived and forced too. Like they ran out of villain ideas so plan to make her Uhtred’s biggest rival. Also dumb.

Make season 5 about Babbenburg and cut all the bullshit out. At least season 4 gave us this 😍😍

Yeah, I understand what you mean. I still enjoyed season 4, but it was certainly not the high point of the series. Alfred/Uhtred chemistry is sorely missed. Hopefully they find their old mojo in some way again going forward.

Take it up with the author. The show is following Cornwells' books. The thing you have to understand there is that albeit Cornwell writes historical fiction, he also knocks books out in a fairly formulaic manner. As is each season effectively covers the events of 2 books . The way things presently stand, based on that there's at best 2 more seasons of TLK to go. Talking of which Season 5 at least has been given the green light: -

Completely agree. I loved the first 3 seasons, would probably give them a 8/10.

But somehow I can't get into the most recent one. Watched a couple of episodes, then couldn't really bother to continue and stopped. Bit of a shame, but that way, it feels quite similar to Vikings to me. Once the main characters and main story arcs are done with, the show just doesn't have the same pull anymore.

Was an outstanding show seasons 1-3. 4 sucks so far. Not sure what happened. Everything about it is inferior.

I confused this with "Kingdom" (that Korean Zombie show) and was like "the fuck is OP talking about... European actresses? Bigger Budget Vikings... are you high?", then the other guy is saying it's generic and I'm like "how is zombies in medieval Asia generic?", but then I saw U Uthred 's "Destiny is all" and everything made sense.

My name is Uthred, son of Uthred.
... also father of Uthred Uthredson and Young Uthred.

Finding names for your kids back then was really easy.

The Last Kingdom is prolly one of my guilty pleasures. This show is so bad that it's good. I find it enjoyable, however it does have the same problem Vikings has after season 5 (or was it 4? I forgot). The death of Alfred did hurt the show.

Just a fantastic series and movie, let’s go back to season 1, remember Alfred? How good was he. The Vikings were a fun antidote, scaring Saxons, they were presented in a very special way, the blender of Cnut, Skorpa, Sigefrid etc. are designed perfectly. Season 3-5 are actually low key, and good examples of history, how the handle to politics. Overall the last kingdom has some good drama, the writers are smart and I think the movie tie-in was the perfect ending.

I liked the film but they went way past the actors age so Uhtred was probably supposed to be in his 60s played by a guy in his 30s. I liked his performance but recasting with an older actor might have worked better for me.

Great series, i watched it from the 1st one, acting is superb and set's and far more historically accurate than the Viking's show from the history channel, i would recommend it to anyone.
